Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 | Celibidache & the Berlin Philharmonic

A historical, superlative concert: The Berlin Philharmonic performs Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E major (WAB 107) under conductor Sergiu Celibidache in the Konzerthaus Berlin, in the spring of 1992. Rehearsals for the concert were documented in the film ‘The Triumphant Return’ (dir. Wolfgang Becker, 1992).

Following the war, the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1922 to 1945, Wilhelm Furtwängler, was required to submit to the denazification process. The young Sergiu Celibidache thereby became the top orchestra’s interim conductor, from 1945 until 1952. Following that, Furtwängler was once again on the podium. In 1954 the Philharmonic selected not the predestined Celibidache to be Furtwängler’s official successor - but rather Herbert von Karajan. Sergiu Celibidache was so incensed by being passed over that he vowed to never again conduct the famous orchestra. It took 38 years before a collaboration could once again take place: the concert of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 happened only at the instigation of the German president at the time, Richard von Weizsäcker. In the intervening years, Celibidache had become an internationally sought-after conductor.
Anton Bruckner's seventh symphony premiered in 1884. The second movement is a piece of funereal music that Bruckner composed in 1883 in response to the death of Richard Wagner. In an homage to Wagner, Bruckner utilized the so-called ‘Wagner tuba’ for the first time, which Wagner had created for his own ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ cycle.
Despite its length and the sprawling development of its thematic arcs, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 remains to this day one of his most regularly performed works, played in concert houses around the globe.

5:20 No other conductor brings out the beauty of the counterpoint in the strings here, incredible attention to detail with regard to the 1st and 2nd violin entries, textures are unbelievably transparent. Celidibache seems to sit back here, forgo conducting for a bit, and simply listen with the rest of us to one of the greatest achievements of the human spirit!

Bruckner was mocked by many in his time, and still today, for the length of his symphonies and the repetition that he wrote. He himself was highly critical of his work and would rewrite his work time and time again. I must be ignorant for I don't hear what ulrich maier and kimurico mention about the strings and brass being out of synch at the end of the spectacular first movement. Ignorance is bliss, for all I hear, as richard williams and mike dunn note, is a true maestro lingering as long as possible over every heavenly note. Celibidache adores this music and through the medium of the massed forces of the orchestra, we can adore it in the same way. A miracle!

At least once a week I listen to this symphony. The boiling of feelings that it provokes is unique. It is pure poetry turned into music. It is exciting to remember when I have been able to listen to it in a live concert. The Adagio is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest moments of humanity

Great as the adagio is I love best the opening with the incredible yearning in the cellos, and the feeling of soaring through clouds over mountaintops...and the finale with a similar indescribable feeling of vaulting heavenward.

Quality studio headphones, or a close pro-sumer equivalent (aka "cans") are the only way to go to get that at home immersive experience when the recording is good and the sound engineers did a good job.

Definitely go attend a concert. You won't be sorry. The sound here is mediocre, the headphones don't help much; a good home stereo with the LP or CD source is much better. But a live performance with skillful good conductor takes one to a heaven (albeit for a short while, but the experience is unforgettable).

Celibidache is THE leading reason I love Bruckner's symphonies to this day starting with this symphony being first I heard when he was with the Munich Philharmonic. The Berlin Philharmonic was and still is one of my all time favorite orchestra thanks to here's them growing up sparingly on a local public access channel at the time that would show short classical music clips when I was just starting to absorb classical music. And lucky for me, their were quite a few clips of the BPO being showed. This symphony with my favorite orchestra and one of the great Brucknerian conductors is pretty much a dream come true and I'm soooooooooooooo glad to at hear and see this. Thank you so much for this upload!

At 5:14, for some bars, Celibidache stops conducting and goes into a sort of trance. I think that he is not only simply enjoying that musical passage, but he is thinking of how the Berliner Philharmoniker are playing it, corresponding to his vision of music. In his mind, it's like if in that moment he is closing a circle after a whole career. These seconds are moving.

In the 1980s, I was living in San Francisco when he gave a performance with the Munich Philharmonic. There was one work on the program: Bruckner Symphony No.4. I "sort of" knew who Celibidache was, but I'd never heard the Fourth Symphony, not even from recordings. It would be an understatement to say it was a stunning performance.

Celibidache is such an amazing conductor! Sometimes his tempos are very slow but always full of musical expression. The listener is aware of the music structure in a way rarely heard with other conductors. His performances unveil hidden details and the orchestral ensemble is astonishing. He rejected the recording studio but his recorded performances are close to perfection. This reunion with his old orchestra 38 years later will remain as the testamente of a legendary conductor.

Moving to see Celibidache conducting Bruckner's masterpiece with the Berliner Philharmoniker again. In another historical performance, Celibidache conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker; Beethoven's Egmont Ouverture in 1950 in the ruins of the Old Philharmonie in Berlin. Worth seeing too!

When you watch a conductor, pay attention to two things : 1, does the music played by the orchestra sound tied with his / her gestures ? 2, do the musicians look at him regularly ? Es asombroso lo que demuestra en esta versión superlativa de la séptima sinfonía de Bruckner. Que una misma partitura puede decirnos tanto cuando es debidamente interpretada, como en este caso por la maravillosa batuta de Celibidache que ensayó hasta el cansancio con la BPO después de treinta y ocho años de ausencia, porque él fue Director Titular de la misma, hasta 1954.

En realidad Celibidache fue director titular de la BPO desde 1945 hasta 1952 cuando la retomó Furtwängler, quien falleció el 30 de Noviembre de 1954. Un día antes Celibidache dió su último concierto con la orquesta, ya que al seleccionar su sucesor los músicos designaron a Karajan como director titular y Celi se negó a dirigirla como invitado. Y así fue: tuvo que morirse Karajan en 1989 para que Celi regresara en 1992.

When most conductors take a slower tempo in Bruckner, it just sounds plodding and dull. When Celibidache takes a slower tempo it is revelatory.

Because one thing is the speed... and another is the Tempo in music.

He can keep the tension in the music so it goes always forward . Thanks to the slow tempo you can hear clearly the phrasé and the colours. Sometimes it takes a time to get used to his slow tempi but it is a unique experience indeed. Celibidache said in an interview that he plays as fast as possible but it has to sound ( or something like that) .

Because a slow tempo is worth it if it shows the details and helps the counterpoint to be more appreciated...compare that with Karajan who drowns out half the orchestration.

Yes. This tempo only works if you can phrase like Celibidache and, as a result, can hold the suspense.

How I wish all of Celi's performances were videoed with the cameras focusing on him only. The collection would have provided master classes for all other conductors and students of conducting in conveying the underlying meanings and emotions of a piece of music to the orchestra as well as the audience.

From all the conductor I've heard and collected, Maestro Celibidache *IS* the only conductor who make the slow tempo become *eizigartiges Erlebnis* (one of the kind...). The first 4 minutes Maestro present the 1st Movement, i seem to see an other dimension, it brought me to wet my eyes... It was that beautiful. Btw, i have other conducter on my collection.

The adagio of this symphony played by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Celibidache. Is the most haunting , melodious ,beautiful music EVER composed. I can imagine Wagner meeting Bruckner in heaven and saying "Danke schoen"
