The Planets is the most frequently performed piece of British 20th century music with immediate and lasting appeal across every generation and all kinds of music-lovers. This release marks the first recording of The Planets on EMI for nearly 20 years. Sir Simon Rattle joins conducting giants Sir Adrian Boult and Leopold Stokowski before him in bringing this powerful work to fresh ears, this time for a whole new audience in the 21st century. A high profile release of this work is long overdue for the Berliner Philharmoniker who have not recorded The Planets since the legendary Karajan recording of 1981. It is entirely fitting therefore that their British chief conductor should lead the worlds greatest orchestra in this release. Coupling The Planets are four world première Asteroids" commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation and first performed in concert for this live recording 16th-18th March 2006. The unique combination of The Planets, Colin Matthewss Pluto and the four Asteroids makes this a not-to-be-missed release.

I still remember his first recording of The Planets with the Philharmonia. My first experience with Holst and the very young Simon Rattle. A great performance.

I love the Neptune piece. So mesmerizing, I feel like I'm floating into the depths of space. I set my CD to repeat this track over and over and is great to hear while I'm concentrating on work.

One has to wonder are the (marvellous) extra pieces commissioned by Sir Simon considered canon or fanfic?

On the issue of best recordings: I have the Berlin Karajan - it's great actually, there are some minor flukes by the players (it's a live recording I think) but the overall sound is incredibly massive but very organic, perfect for this music. I also have Holst's own recording - it's... not great. The sound quality is ancient and the winds are sometimes out of tune. The tempos are also very rushed, probably because of recording-technical limitations.

Neptune is so quiet on the CD, it's like they meticulously tried not to go over -30 dB. I turn up the volume to hear it and then get earraped by tracks like Uranus.

The Steinberg/Boston Symphony performance of Mars is the most dramatic version I've ever heard. Anyone aware of a more dramatic one I'd be pleased to hear about it.

Why did they have to add all the commentary crap to this recording. It's a wonderful performance, but they won't STFU and let the orchestra play.
