I love the Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery from Islay, Scotland. But of course, if you watched the first part of this series you already know that. I took advantage of the opportunity to try the most recent range of whiskies as part of a Virtual tasting through Kensington Wine Market. These are the most recent releases from Bruichladdich(2022 Range, excluding the Classic Laddie), which arrived in my market in late 2022. It was a really great time and the crew from ‪@kensingtonwinemarket‬ were awesome hosts as always. I held back just a little bit in each glass so I could give you my first impressions of the Bruichladdich 2022 releases.
In the conclusion to this two part Bruichladdich series, I am presenting my "first impressions" on 4 peated Bruichladdich Scotch whiskies from their Octomore and Port Charlotte ranges. Those whiskies are:
Port Charlotte SC 01 (Sauternes Cask)
Octomore 13.1 (Scottish Barley)
Octomore 13.2 (Oloroso Cask)
Octomore 13.3 (Islay Barley)
Watch the video to find out which of these 4 Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whiskies was my favourite. Thanks once again for checking out the video, can't wait to talk to you all in the comment section. Sláinte, Matt.

Love the fact that you did the whole range and the exploration series together. I wish more reviewers would do that. I absolutely love the 13.1 with it's bbq notes and finish that goes on for days. I have seen the SC:01 around several places this month and will add it to list of bottles to pick up. The SC:01 is $145 by me and the 13.1 is $186 at a local store and $219 at a chain store

Hey thanks Warlord! Yea, it only made sense to compare all 4 since I had the opportunity. I don't know if that will happen this year, but one can dream! That's an incredible price on the 13.1! Honestly, I'd be picking 1 of each up of the SC:01 and 13.1. Both are very worthy! Cheers 🥃

Interesting comparison. I’ll have to find the port charlotte. I usually love Oloroso, so was sad to hear the 13.2 didn’t deliver.

Thanks Jason! The Port Charlotte really impressed in direct comparison. I was surprised too as I love Oloroso casks specifically over PX. It was still enjoyable, but not without its faults. Many do still enjoy it though so there's hope. It is entirely possible that the sulfur notes could blow off of it once the bottle is opened for a while, one of the challenges of samples. Cheers 🥃

Wow! You compared all of the Octomore 13’s plus the PC:SC! That alone warrants gratitude from me. 👍🏼 I did get a chance to compare last year’s Octomore 12.3 to the PC:OLC. I gave it to the Octomore, but not by much. For the price I’ll go PC all day. That said, I love me some Octomore. 🥃

Great work! Agree generally that the PC Exploration series in comparison to most Octomores offers better value for money. However the 10.2 was/is one of my all time favorites.

Weirdly, they used to be fairly affordable in Alberta, Canada. The 9.1 and 10.1 were about $140CAD, roughly £87. They are double that now. Way too expensive these days.

Sad story I got a bottle of the 12.2 before I moved from NY to down south. My go to Liquor store gave me a nice discount as a goodbye for the years I gave them service. Of the 35 bottles of scotch that made the move the Octomore 12.2 was the only bottle that somehow broke. I packed them all perfectly. Couldn't save the that bottle....

You did the same tasting I did. I wasn’t able to attend live, but my fiddler and I spent a couple of hours tasting and discussing the night before. It’s too bad, I’d have liked to have chatted with you. I uh… bought the Octomore 13.1. The only other Octo I’ve ever owned was the 9.1. I’ve been dreaming of getting another for years now. I did not like the 13.2.
@Hexagonal_Crank
@Hexagonal_Crank Жыл бұрын
You know what - you're not alone with the 13.2. I did not get along with it at all. It started with a mild matchstick sulphur, but by the end of the dram that was all I could get from it. And the 13.1 was my favourite of the Octomores which kind of surprised me.
@whiskyonthewestcoast

Ahh too bad, that would have been fun to run into each other on there. I found the 13.1 very comparable to the 9.1. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much, just seemed classic Octomore .1. I'm with ya, the .2 was disappointing. I could fin some charm but if I'm picking up sulfur, there's a real problem lol 😆
@whiskyonthewestcoast

All in agreement it seems. I'm terrible with noticing sulfur so when it was the first thing I noticed on this, it's a big problem haha 😄 13.1 was the pick of the Octo's, I'd agree.

@@Hexagonal_Crank it was the most similar to the 9.1, which is a bottle I still miss years later, so I kind of had to grab one. Even then, I could only do it because it appeared on sale. I could never afford it otherwise.

@@whiskyonthewestcoast idk If I'm acclimatized to peat but I could barely taste or smell any peat in the octomore. Laphroaig 10 is MUCH stronger than octomore when it comes to peat. Very suprised.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Жыл бұрын
certainly could be a little peat blind, but there are other explanations too. It's definitely a different type of peat. It's Highland peat as opposed to Islay peat so less coastal or medicinal and more ashy wood smoke. I also find Octomore peat not as strong as Laphroaig 10 CS for example. I think while it's PPM count is higher before distillation, the very narrow cuts they employ produce an exceptionally clean spirit for the peating level. Most of those phenolic compounds come out the closer you get to the tails and it is my understanding that they are trying to cut a lot of those out. Hope it's still enjoyable even with the surprise! Cheers 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoast after a few weeks, I believe I found the peat note. It's the strongest note on the whisky, but I guess its just not what I would consider peat note. I was looking for a laphroaig-type peat. It's certainly different. I enjoy it nonetheless.

@@RwingDsquad Glad you're still exploring and enjoying the whisky. It's a really unique take on the style. In terms of heavily peated it is polar opposite to the Laphroaig 10 CS style.

The other tuber i watched who showes alot of whiskey tasting said the octomore was extreamely peaty, and waaaay more than lagavulin. But when you describe it, it seemes like its the same as lagavulin? Im trying to choose between 13.1 and 13.2, and you made me confused 😅
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 10 ай бұрын
It certainly is more peated than Lagavulin! Quite a bit more. However, in my experience with Octomore, your first number of glasses feel incredibly smoky, but once you acclimate to that level of peat you find all of the other flavors that work in harmony with the peat and that becomes more interesting. It's part of what makes Octomore a different animal and well worth the money if you haven't had it. On picking a 13 series Octomore if you really enjoy wine cask influences then you might really love it. I typically enjoy them too, but the 13.1 was classic ex-bourbon Octomore and had no off notes. It really is splitting hairs though. I loved the 12.2 and I adore the 7.3. Regardless of which bottle you grab, if you love peat influences in whisky then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Hope this was helpful in someway. Cheers 🥃

Depends which one you're referring to Jeff. I have tried the Octomore 10 year 3rd edition which was my whisky of the year last year. It's seriously good. I have also tried the Octomore 10.3 which was also good, but not up to the standard of the 6.3, 7.3 batches. Still with the exception of a few, almost all Octomore is enjoyable to me. Cheers 🥃
