Hi oh man-- - this whole Brumation thing has me VERY stressed! I recently adopted a Beardie - maybe 4-5 months ago. The woman who was caring for him didn't know his exact age, so he's approx. 4-6 yrs. I have been caring for him as best as I possibly can, but no one knows much about the Brumation thing. I'm about to order a new enclosure for him- he came in a......75 gal??? Aquarium tank and I am not satisfied with my attempts at cleaning it ect-- I need a FRONT OPENING enclosure! Your video has encouraged me- THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! LOVED YOUR ACCENT 💜

I wanted to share just how thankful I am for you taking the time and care to make this video. I am admittedly under educated, however recently under less than ideal environmental conditions I took in this phenomenal bearded dragon, with not much other than my loving heart and innovative ability to make due with raw materials I made him a little enclosure, however he was sleeping with me and my apartment has no heat yet, I woke up this morning and he would not Wake up I literally thought he was dead, I'm freaking out, crying, doing cpr, what I understood was in the winter they hibernate, however I did not have a real reason to inquire more prior to this I was just trying to make sure he ate and I could keep him warm, fast forward a couple hours, your video saved me so much Googling and comparing and freaking myself out, words are just words until they mean something, and my heart ripped out of my chest 7 times this morning I don't have the energy to look all over I needed to find comfort In self education, I had a traumatic brain injury and cognitive issues, so it's really great to find someone who can simplify and summarize the key parts that are vital and use their words to highlight them In ways that my brain can remember or reference back to in the future. Better late than never to be informed however, I now can feel confident in my real life experience and will remain calm during his time asleep. I didn't know what to do and I felt horrible so thank you for kindly and very thoroughly communicating this for everyone it really makes a difference and leaves me with a peaceful sense of clarity and better equipped to continue my bearded dragon adventure without shaking him every 5 seconds or creepily staring at him to make sure he is breathing. I didn't feel or see a heartbeat so I was really upset, I didn't know that the heart rate and breathing slows down that slow and occurs so suddenly. Thank u

My beardie, Mando, has slowed down significantly but he still eats from time to time and his bowel movements are less frequent (duh). I’ve been really worried about him but now that I’ve watched this video, I feel more confident in leaving him alone. He’s also preparing to shed a good portion of his face so I think that could be preventing him from going into brumation... (aside from me harassing him with love and attention which I’ll stop now).

We live in the US, northern midwest. Our baby Jerry is around 7 years old (we rescued 2 years ago) and he has went into brumation every winter. He goes in around Oct-Nov and stays that way til March or so. We use a thermometer to regulate temps. He is a really social guy, and starts sleeping more and not asking to get out. In the spring he starts looking around from his hidey hole and then I offer some food. He gets up and usually starts his spring Jerry dancing aka mating behaviors😆. We drop some water on his nose time to time and like my infant children I feel the need to check if he's alive but he's always fine. Just looks out a slitted eye at me like "What the hell Mom I'm trying to rest?"

This is really good to hear because my Frank is about a year, and he went into Brumation early like end of Sept as the temps began cooling and it was getting darker a little earlier. I keep seeing they shouldn't be in brumation over 4 months, and I have been so worried he will die if he stays in until the weather is warmer. We are looking at a good 6 months of him hiding out if he does indeed stay in his hide through winter. We see snow in March a lot too, so late April / May is when it actually warms up here in KS. UGH this is so stressful.

Hi there! Thank you for this video! I’ve liked and subscribed! My 6+ yr old bearded dragon is in brumation now. I adopted him in March 2019, he’s my first beardie. I keep his tank next to a window for his viewing pleasure, so the temperature in his tank has changed since winter began. I’ve kept his basking and uvb lights on a timer and though I’ve added heating pads, the cooler temperature coming through the window combined with the shorter natural daylight hours has led him into brumation. He was nice and healthy before. It’s been 3 weeks of sleep now. Since this is my first experience idk wether I should just leave him alone or check on him. I know it’s natural for him to sleep. I don’t know anything about his past. The day he began brumation, he had a good poop then ate a little bit of greens and blueberries and burrowed down in his hide. So it’s just a small bit of food on his stomach. I’m not breeding and he is simply a pet. Should I let him be? Should I go ahead and wake him? (I do miss him) Should I move his tank and stabilize the temperature? I just want what’s best for my guy! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Her enclosure is well regulated and the day/night schedule does not change throughout the year, but I think she senses the change in temperature at night (I turn off all lights and heat at night). I'd read about brumation, my beardie is a couple years old and he startd acting oddly like you were describing- going to darker parts of his terrarium and his hide when he usually doesn't, sleeping a lot more and eating less. I figured he's starting to go into brumation and I'm really nervous abou it since it's his first time, so thank you for posting this video. Good info. I’ve found as he nears brumation. I start reducing the lights by an hour each week. So normally basking and uvb are from 7 am to 9pm. So after week one it is 7am to 8pm. I do this til I get to 5pm. Keep at 5pm lights on for another week. Then I turn off all lights and keep a blanket over cage for about two months. She remains in total dark during that period. Checking on her occasionally. Works great.

Btw I had a beardie years ago, he always brumated around fall. He would hunker down in his hide and just sleeeeeeep. I think my new beardie who's about 5 or 6 months old, got so used to being outside in the real sun, he was outside daily!! When the weather started getting colder we couldnt put him outside anymore and thats when he started slowing down.. so a massive light/natural uv change is what happened. Even have a brand new MVB and he still doesnt want to come outta it. But hes so young. His sibling is now 2x his size because she isnt brumating and still plowing thru food!

All my beardies are on thermostats 2 have never gone into brumation (ages 4 and 3) and 3 have (ages 13, 9 and 5) reptiles are also very sensitive to atmospheric changes so when it rains and storms a lot they will know which can cause brumation (I also see a change in my female ball pythons around this time too they always become so picky 🙄😂). It’s also signalled by hormones too there are a couple of studies done that are online that show that beardies do go through a big hormonal change during brumation so even if your temps stay the same they may still go into brumation.

He doesn't eat very much and poops 3 weeks to a month sometimes. He's has a good weight. I have a thermostatically controlled light and heat that go on together for 12 hours and let it drop a few degrees overnight. l think they notice the barometric pressure change if nothing else and sense this way better then we do. My snakes certainly react to this and of course darn breeding season which for some coincides with cooler weather too. l am thinking beardies would be similar noticing this.

Thanks for all the info! I'm a new beardie owner & my 8-9month old beardie seems to have gone into brumation. She was acting lethargic & not interested in eating, so I brought her to a vet. Her kidney levels were off, so we did fluid injections, blood & fecal tests at the time. Everything checked out. My question is- she seems to only be half asleep.. Not burrowed, but perched up on the cool side, out of the reach of the lights.. She opens her eyes, moves her head a bit, but otherwise motionless. Do I just leave her be? Do I still soak her? Is it bad to get her out or raise her temp by holding her at this time? Its cold here in New England & its about 70 degrees on the cool side of her tank. Thanks for all the info & any more advice you can offer!

My bearded dragon has jist turned 1. It's March we've jist gone I to spring. She is showing all the signs of brumation. Slowly reduced food. Pooing less (every other day instead of daily) but solid so health poo. Sleepy and less energetic. This changed kicked in after she had a partial shed. Can thos happen at this time of year now she is 1 as I've her brumation happens from a year old upwards. She burrows anywhere she can find in my home if I get her out of her vavarium.

Oobi (my beardie) is almost 2 years old and he goes into brumation every winter season. From the end of November to about the end of January sometimes into February! First time scared me! I thought he was dying or something. I usually keep the temps the same, and he just goes away from the hot side to the cool side digs a huge hole and lays in it lol. He will wake up to eat every few days or so ( like once a week), but I always have to put him on the hammock under the basking light to make sure he'll digest. Otherwise he will just go back in the hole he dug. Since I know when he's about to brumate I always give meds before hand (reptaid=lifesaver lol) and wait for a big poo. After that I just check him to make sure he's still alive and leave him be. Periodically I will intervene to give him a bath since he's old enough to be on loose substrate (NO SAND!!!)....cocoa soil/peat moss mix seem to work for me with a LOT of large pond stones. I check his femorals and leave him to his laziness....Lazy beardies are the best ha ha

During brumation, is it best to leave them alone in their inclosure until they're done or can you take them out and offer them some attention? Also, is it ok to spray a beardie with some water whilst they're in brumation?
@KL-hr7rk
@KL-hr7rk 4 жыл бұрын
Anyone more educated than me please feel free to correct/critique this, it just seems like this comment won't get an answer if I don't chime in :) Weight checks can be done but brumation is meant to be a restful period of time. It is the equivalent of hibernation if that helps it click in one's brain :) As he mentions in the video. they can't go into their equivalent of REM sleep (the phase of sleep in humans where all of the healing takes place, among other things) with anything in their stomach. I would assume the same is true if you are taking them out for handling. I assure you, your beardy will not care if they are not handled. As hard as it is to believe, bearded dragons do not have the same brain as we humans do. They don't crave attention/affection in that way. When beardies "beg to come out" by running into the glass it is called glass surfing and it is generally because most enclosures on the market aren't large enough for them to enrich themselves like they would in the wild. They want outside-of-the-tank exploration time because they are curious/bored. The reason it happens more when the owner is in the room is because the beardy is smart enough to know that the owner is their key (so to speak) to exercise and enrichment. Human owners are also warm, a food source, and a bath givers so that's why they seek us out. While brumating, beardy does not seek out food, warmth, baths or exploration, so bringing him out would be solely for the owner's benefit, possibly to the detriment of the brumation process. Please do not take this information as an insult to the owner/dragon bond. While reptiles can't love us in the same way we love them, they fixate on us in their own precious, cold, reptilian way. Having the heart and capacity to love and gain the trust of something so different from us humans is incredibly beautiful. Bathing or spraying should not take place without placing them back into a properly heated enclosure so that they can warm up. They cannot warm themselves when chilled by water because they are do not produce their own heat like us humans, so I would not advise spraying. If your bearded dragon has a water dish (and one knows that he drinks from it) and it is still accessible during brumation than water intake shouldn't be a concern. If the beardy doesn't have open access to water or you do not know for sure that he drinks from his water dish, you could try dropping some water on his nose with a baby nose-sucker thingy (just a drop or two) and if he's not interested wipe it up. Personally, I would let mine be throughout brumation besides weight checks. Commented with all the love and positive vibes for you and your pet!!
