I got my beardie from Petco and very quickly discovered almost EVERYTHING they had said to do was wrong. So I poured THOUSANDS into a new tank with proper lighting and heat on one side and completely changed his diet. The difference was instant. I’ve had him for 5 months now and he LOVES Dubia roaches. I have some set up for breeding and still buy enough to fill his little belly. I try all kinds of foods too. He likes leafy greens and some various worms so I try to give him a variety throughout the day/week. I tend to avoid mealworms due to the fact that sometimes the chitin can make baby beardies a bit constipated, but now that he’s growing I’ve started giving him a couple every now and again. He doesn’t seem a huge fan of fruits so far, but I do keep trying lol. I adore my little guy to pieces and he loves to hang out with me and give nose boops.

A water bowl in a cage depends... Usually having one in the cool part of the cage is a good thing (as long as your humidity isn't an issue). Some beardies wold love to just play in the water (They also like baths). During winter it's super dry here (avg 10% humidity) so regular misting and moving the bowl over to the warm end of the enclosure is a must.
@VCSportFishing4 ай бұрын
That’s one of the points I disagreed with him over and agree with you. My warm side temp is about 90-95, my basking areas are about 110-115 ish. My cool side gets to 80ish even into 70s sometimes. My humidity sits around 30 even with a big ass water bowl in the cool side. I mean I can get my humidity down a bit lower I bet if I eliminated the water, but my dragon seems to be growing quickly and he seems to be healthy and happy. I don’t think I’ll eliminate the water bowl. He doesn’t tend to really drink if I mist his nose, so I don’t do it anymore. I will at times catch him sitting in the water just drinking. The only thing is I now have to empty that water every night and replace with new. I use purified water with all of my reptiles. So he goes through a bottle a week, but other than that, he’s easy. Believe me. I have some much more challenging pets throughout my house. My boy spike Lee is just fine.

When I bought my Beardie from Petco, or Petsmart, I can't remember which one. He was a little baby, so damn cute! So, I asked the lady to show me everything I need to buy for him. She advised me to buy the starter tank with a very, very, tiny heat bulb. It had to be 10-20 watts, I thought she knew what she was doing, so I bought it. That tiny heat bulb did absolutely nothing! Every time I got him out, he was freezing. I could tell that he was slowly dying, and it was breaking my heart. I then bought him a bigger tank, and the proper lighting; and today, he's a very happy, loving, large, fat Beardie! I love you Smoke! 🦎❤💋

@@danabarnhill3465 You shouldn't feed any animal lettuce. It has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. Try greens instead, like turnip greens, dandelion greens (my dragon's favorites), basically if it had the word "greens" in it you should be okay. Always check to see if a fruit or veggie you want to feed your dragons is okay... at all, or just for a sometimes treat, like cherries (pitted), or if they're okay to have every day, like blueberries. I give then a good salad of at least 2 kinds of greens of different texture and a couple types of fruit or berry, like papaya, mango, strawberry with the outer seeds cut or scraped off, never give them anything with seeds large enough you can see. I take raspberries and smoosh then up to get the seeds out and kind of sprinkle the guts on top of the greens like a dressing. As for watering, we got a large medicine syringe and fill it warm water mixed with a bit of liquid calcium and just drop the water drop by drop on the end of their, erm... well, we call it their beek because I'm an idiot, but... they'll keep drinking until they're full and then they'll just let it run down their chins until it tickles, which is funny to watch. Never try to stuff the syringe tube it in their mouths. Not only can you hurt their mouths, but you can actually drown your dragon or, at the least, damage their poor little digestive systems. I always let my dragons have a turn at walkabout in my home. I have a room with limited furnishings that I let them run around in until they find a dark, cold spot to sleep, then I know they're done. I've a little ramp up to a lizard perch (cat window perch you can get at any pet store and will fit in just about any window unless you have decorative window chair rail type stuff like mine does, then you'll have yourself a DIY project!) And lots of logs and climbing stuff out of hemp rope for them to climb around on. I hope I helped you out and/or gave you some ideas to work with. Hope you have a wonderful, love filled life with your beardie!😁💕

Cold Blood Creations I’m a relatively new Beardie “Grandma”. (My Mom thought it was a great idea to buy my son a dragon for his 8th Birthday. (While this is great for some kids, my son is on the spectrum and afraid to touch his dragon. But he’s learning!) I have been helping my son care for “Jeff” for 3 years now, and so far, so good! I’m learning something new about these critters every day. I was just recently told not to have sand in Jeff’s enclosure. I was blown away! What do you suggest I put on the floor of the glass breeder tank? Thanks for any and all help you can offer! (Like many others, I bought the sand and have changed it out several times in the last 3 years. I thought these pet store people knew what they were talking about! Who knew?!?) Keep up the great work, and keep those videos coming!

I feel bad for basically mistreating my bearded dragon. I've owned him for 5 years, given to me by a friend of one of my family members. I didn't ever consider that they required more then they seemed before. I will try and follow what I have learned so far. Thank you for the tips, I hope that it isn't to late for me to change the way I take care of him and that it hopefully increases the time he has left. Although he seems to be doing pretty good, I still feel bad for taking care of him in a improper and poor way.
@TheTeslacoilz2 жыл бұрын
The fact that you can take constructive criticism and implement proper changes in favor of the animal over your own ego shows your a good pet owner. Yes research before owning is best but it doesn't happen in all cases. All reptile and pet owners should continue to research, even after you have the pet, we should always be improving. That's important!

The good thing about beardies is that they're very resilient and hardy lads. In the wild (Australia no less) conditions and food available aren't always gonna be perfect, so naturally they've adapted to make do. Obviously you should try to provide any pet with the best conditions you can realistically manage, but it often takes serious borderline inhumane maltreatment for bearded dragons to show clear issues.

I just found this channel and it has lots of useful information so thank you for that, cold blooded creations, here’s a SUB. One thing I just wanted to say was, Yes bearded dragons can eat meal worms. HOWEVER, in comparison to other types of lizards like crested geckos or leopard geckos or skinks, bearded dragons actually have a smaller intestinal tract. Mealworms exoskeletons are made out of almost pure chitin, (pronounced ki-tin) which makes it harder for bearded dragons to digest them though still possible. Keep in mind if you’re feeding your dragons meal worms, to not feed them it every single day as it CAN and WILL lead to impactions. Feeding meal worms is fine everyone once in a while or every other day or something. One thing I noticed that he didn’t go over in more depth is the bathing. Bathing in warm water for most reptiles actually acts as a laxative and is comfortable for the reptile, it’s basically them sitting in nice warm water and helping them poop. If 10-15 minutes doesn’t help them poop, pick your dragon up and gently massage its stomach as that can help get things to move around a little bit. Super worms and horn worms are a better alternative as far as worms go ( of course depending on the age/size of your dragon. Hope this helped! Good luck to all you dragon tamers
@animal14025 жыл бұрын
Wiz Head mealworms DO NOT cause impaction, loose substrate DOES NOT cause impaction. Poor husbandry coupled with crap internet advice causes countless dragons to waste away slowly. The key to success with these fascinating reptiles (as far as diet is concerned) is variation. That includes the green foods. You can feed your dragon nothing but mealworms and dandelions and it will live a long and happy life (coupled with top notch husbandry) but why do that? Mix and match food items, change feeding times and even feeding days. You are entirely correct that comparatively beardies have a shorter digestive tract, but due to their omnivorous diet and arid lifestyle, they have one of the most efficient. Great stuff Cold Blooded Creations 🤘🏻
@jiheisho57795 жыл бұрын
@@animal1402 mealworms overtime CAN cause compaction but only if your giving them to the bearded dragon all the time and calci sand CAN if eaten when wet could cause compaction. I get what your saying but I've bought a adult beardie and all its life its been fead on mealworms and when I got it him he was unfortunately compacted but I regularly bathed him because it like the other guy said it helps them poop and is relaxing and I also massaged him and eventually he pooped and I fead him on locusts and morio worms because they have a soft outer shell whereas mealworms have a hard outer shell. Good luck on your reptilian adventures👍🏻🦎
@bunniebie92695 жыл бұрын
@@jiheisho5779 calci sand should never be used as substrate. it should never have been marketed as such to begin with. impaction issues are more commonly from dehydration and too-low basking temperatures which stifle digestion processes.

As a pet store animal caretaker, I am very adamant about proper care with my animals, reptiles especially. You’ve made a lot of good points! Not all pet stores are like this, as he makes very clear in this video particularly. But there are quite a few that are like this. If you see a pet shop that you were hoping to purchase an animal from, if it’s known that that particular animal is more solitary, do not purchase one if it is housed with multiple. My bearded dragon personally is a rescue and came from a horrible breeder who housed many together. If you wish to use a water dish, put it in the coldest part of the tank, and make sure its a smaller one. Less water=less humidity.

As someone who works at a chain pet store, the struggle to maintain an ideal reptile environment without prompting the uninformed public to call the DOA is a real frustration. Everyone who deals with the reptiles in our store knows their stuff (the department manager wouldn’t allow otherwise,) so we’re left explaining to customers why their setup shouldn’t exactly match ours. We’re lucky that our current management has given us the green light to change the company-mandated substrate and lighting guidelines as we see fit to meet the actual needs of the animals in our care.

I’m a merchandiser ops specialist at petco and it honestly pisses me off when they use sand/ calcium sand but corporate gives us a planogram and we have to use the sand and I have reptiles at home and I’m honest with my customers and tell them what to use and not to use. We use reptile water dishes and keep it very low and keep the humidity 20-30% humidity and we do not use heat pads on the bottom and make sure the breeders we work with we make sure if we are gonna house two or three baby bearded dragons they are from the same litter most of my employees are reptile ppl at heart so we bend the rules to make sure they are appropriately fed, housed and taken care of. Also the information these customers get and tell me is ridiculous it’s about the same as what this video said and I always strive to give them the best and accurate info. I had a customer say their Beardie is “aggressive” and about a month old and I asked if their Beardie hisses and puffs their beard when they aren’t around and run at the glass and they said yes. I told them their Beardie isn’t a asshole he’s just seeing his reflection and thinks it’s another dragon and that stresses them out a lot. Have a background and cover the sides. I use a pepper towel and make sure the glass isn’t squeaky clean so it isn’t so reflective. Also bearded dragons don’t want to be handled and picked up all the time. For me I just place my hand in his terrarium and if he crawls on my hand then I’ll take him out but if he runs away or doesn’t crawl on my hand I leave him alone. Imagine being played with or picked up all the time and someone invading your space when you just aren’t in the mood. It would irritate you too

I really appreciate this video. A month ago I adopted a fancy bearded dragon, because he was the one that was mostly sitting by himself. He was the one most isolated in the pet store tank, I felt like he just spoke to me. (I’m socially anxious, so I feel you buddy.) He’s gonna be 3 months old soon, or maybe he already is I don’t know. I am 16 and this is the first pet that I have gotten to take care of by myself. I am learning new things every day. I never stop doing research. I only want to provide the best care for my dragon and I wanna see him grow up big and strong. I’m not sure how I got to this video, I was looking at dragon shedding tips (he’s shedding buckets right now, he’s grown quite a bit) but I do not regret the click. I will definetly learn from this and see what I can do to provide the things needed for my dragon to be healthy. I know this video is old but it’s gold and will never prove to be untrustworthy. Thank you so much! His name is Dart. He is energetic and very judgy, it’s kinda funny. Not sure if he is a he or a she.. but when the time comes and I find out it’ll make caring for him much easier so that I can assess the needs that the different genders have/need.

Dragons usually can't see still water, that's why many people don't see their dragons drink out of water bowls. As the video says, spraying the vegetables and regular baths keep them well hydrated. Two mains signs of dehydration are yellow urates (the white bit in the poo) or very wrinkled skin. If there is a bit of clear liquid on your beardies poo then that'd a good sign of hydration (as long as the whole poo isn't liquid)

But as long as you help him drink like I would spray mine by the mouth or down his head when he had it drop down to drink… and also bathing a few times a month. Take him outside a few times a week. Let him out w you. Cuddle him. Mine loved cuddling. And he hated greens he loved his insects and he lived 14 yrs off mealworms and superworms and a variety of fruit and veggies! Plus some suppliments and was worms and soldier fly larvae! Keep the tank clean. I recommend a desert carpet and tile! Ppl always say no carpet it holds bacteria ect… but mine had his for 7 yrs and never had an issue w health not once. He was the most healthy living beardie ever Lolol

I use would chips soft ones. And a carpet, rocks big enough they can’t swallow, and a hammock w a little blanket Lolol they love to cuddle up! i feed my bearded dragon super worm and crickets on occasion. some dude that worked at feeders supply told us to cut off the super worms head because they can eat their way out of their stomach. i thought it was crazy because before my dragon swallows the worm he chews that dang thing like crazy. people that work at pet stores should know what they are talking about lol

We were told to cut the heads off as they can bite your dragon before they have chewed them up.

Hello, I have a Rankins Dragon, and I'm leaving for the summer and I have quite the trouble getting someone to take full care of him ( they can come in the evening to feed him ) but they can't come in the morning to turn on the heat lamp. I have a heat mat. Would it be possible for me to have the heat mat on all day and night on, as the vivarium is 4ft long, so if he needs to he could go on the other side to cool down or sleep. The heat mat is under coco fiber substrate ( about 2 centimetres ) right under his favourite sleeping spot. I never have the heat mat on normally. Would this be possible?

David Baer don't use under belly heat with dragons. There bellies are sensitive and they take heat much better on their backs

Thank you so much. I have realized with my bearded dragon ( Oliver) is skinny and is always out of water. When I bath him he is licking water all off my hands. He is only 5 months and knowing that is sad. This should be shared to all the pets sellers.

I've owned many an "exotic" pet over the years, from birds like Parrots and Parakeets to many species of Tarantula. I've recently taken to raising Bearded Dragons, and the substantial difference between my former pets and them is astonishing. I'm glad there are videos like yours out there to help new owners out

Yeah, I work at a pet shop and we legally have to have water bowls in the enclosure. We still manage to keep the enclosures pretty dry though. I agree with the majority of this, however, I've personally had lizards have issues after eating only mealworms for extended period of time. Some customers have as well. That said, there are options other than crickets and mealworms. Feeding the weekend oranges and then immediately feeding is brilliant.

GREAT INFO!! I’m a supervisor and animal care lead at popular pet chain store and I’m always trying to learn as much as I can to care for them correctly, as I’m provided ZERO education. Trying to break the stigma of chain store care. SO THANK U GUYS!
