@johndough2473 жыл бұрын
What driver aids are in Modern F1? In the current cars there is no ABS, no TC, near 1000HP (some are estimated to be over that), less turbo lag so can be even twitchier, plus faster top speed AND better aero which means more G-forces on the driver, plus they have to manage more than just fuel load, they also have the battery to worry about. You know how hard it is to adjust energy deployment, energy recovery, brake bias, engine maps etc, adjusting them for almost every corner to stay competitive, while under heavy G's and battling other cars? I LOVE the 80's era of F1 and the Lotus 98T was phenomenal, but people need to stop slagging off modern F1 with fake facts and overblown nostalgia and learn to appreciate all eras, as they all have their specific difficulties. The young guys today might make it look easy on most days, but that's because they are on average much more physically fit than drivers of the past. The modern cars are a proper handful to drive, stick shift or not. Not using antiquated tech like Manual shift, as cool as it is, does not make the current drivers any less of a racer. If guys like Alonso, Raikonnen, Verstappen and Hamilton existed back then they'd be just as competitive as the top guys of that era (and yes they know how to drive stick). The only real difference between today's great drivers and those of the past is there hasn't been 30+ years to canonize them as patron saints of the church of F1.

same with top comment of RobertO. V12's were'nt banned, they were phased out by the teams themselves. V10's are less complex to build and run as well as shorter in length which allowed a more even weight distribution closer to the centre of gravity of the car. They were never considered before the late 90's as a V10 configuration creates problems in ignition timing and distribution on the 360 degree "work cycle" but with the introduction of electronic ignition this was no longer an issue.
@davidphilips55432 жыл бұрын
F1 drivers today are brave and skillful for sure and I admire them. However, to drive those cars in 86 - they had bigger balls no doubt. Also, Brundle must be a tad jealous as back in 86, whilst Senna was driving the lotus, he was probably chugging round in a dodgy Zak speed or something 😁

V12 were in fact prohibited because they were a platform that allowed to produce way to power. FIA wanted slower and safer cars. For example, when from 1995 to 2000, the teams were changing from a v12 to a v10 engines with the same displacement, power output always went down.

Maybe a W24 engine with Quad Turbo Supercharger setup reaching up to 1500HP or higher. 8 speed gearbox. 4 rear wheel drivetrain (for more grip surface to transfer all the torque in lowspeed cornering). Etcetera...! I can only dream of the weird creations teams might come up with, but it would be interesting to see all these new concepts compete with each other, rather then the basically the same cars due to regulations. :)

Right. They fell to 4.0 bar boost regulations in '87. Then down to 2.5 bar for '88 before they were killed off. It'll never happen again with the 2014 engines but I vote for going backwards. Less aero, a lot of power, manual gearbox, and hell throw some more power in there for good measure.
