You can compare Walter's Mozart with other great conductors of his generation and say this tempo or that was the same or different, but none of them got the variations of mood Walter got from his orchestras. Listen to the third movement of this, which is often played in a way that makes the piece sound dull. This has such life and expression, yet on the surface it's the same tempo and texture of all his contemporaries. He just had a way with Mozart that no one could touch.

Totally agree. It seems Walter takes the time to think how each instrument should play each note while many other conductors sometimes just go through the motions on autopilot.
