Brushed vs Brushless Summits - which is really better?
We head out on the local BMX trail to see if we can tell.
The black Summit is almost stock. Just a bumper and servo change from stock.
The red Summit is also mostly stock, with a Hobbywing Brushless setup included.

That was my surprise also. I go brushless in everything - but hesitated when I saw the price of sensored brushless setups - especially for larger vehicles! $200+ is a LOT to spend vs the small modifications you can do to keep the brushed motor alive. The black brushed version in this video had the stock motor in it for almost 1 year, before he geared it way up and burned it up. A fan and a mild gear up may really be where this vehicle's sweet spot is.

Yes! The sensored systems are much better for crawling for sure. Also, more expensive.

That is right! In this test however, we didn't really see a difference.

Awesome video, good comparison between Brushed and Brushless Summit. Looked like some fun woodzy Fall trails. Was wondering if u could tell me the Hobbywing Brushless system you're running. Getting a summit for my 10 year old son for Christmas, that looked like a real good Brushless system for a future upgrade!

This is an older video - older Hobbywing system they don't make anymore. But, it would have been similar to this one: amzn.to/3EN9Qim Honestly though, just like from the video - I would not recommend making it brushless. The truck is not built to handle that power.

Yeah, we really came down on the side of brushed for us. Brushless is nice and all...but I am also living with a limited amount of $$$ and for what we do, the brushed was great.

The Summit does surprisingly well. Wide stance, huge tires, and soft suspension make quick work of most obstacles. In fact, sometimes it is too easy!

Yeah - we default to brushless for everything. Just surprised how well it did in a crawler, uncensored.

How is the battery life with brushless? Do you get more or less run time?

I would say it is roughly the same. All depends on how hard you are driving it. With the use like in this video, we never changed batteries for the whole walk.

Loved that you did a comparison video on the two different motor platforms. Also liked the the FPV shots. What camera was that? The shots were pretty smooth. An added plus was the beautiful scenery you were filming in. Loved the tree climbing.

Thanks! The camera is the Sony FDR-X3000. I specifically chose it for this type of filming. It does 1080 @ 120fps so the slow-motion shots come out really well, but the kicker for me was the internal image stabilization that at the time was best in class. The new GoPro might be better now, but this is still a really good option.

I would have to agree, while I have a brushless system in there, I kind of wanted something that could go back an forth, staying mostly stock (didn't quite go as planned, lol), but since I got a system that could do exactly that for a different vehicle, I was free to test things at my leisure.

The Summit is just the best...Summit. Nothing else quite like it. If they ever come out with a Summit 2.0, I would have to seriously consider it!
