oztooltalk have been waiting to get our hands on Makita's 18V BRUSHLESS Planer since we heard about it. Was it because we thought they needed an upgrade? Not likely. It is because their brushed unit was already the market leader!
The BKP181 has the following specs/features:
- Chip ejection on both sides
- Max RPM of 12,000
- Three different bevel/chamfer grooves
- Up to 25mm rebating on one side
- AWS (auto-start wireless system) and ATD (automatic torque drive)

Another great review guys but just one comment that dust port cover twists to come off you don't pull it off with your fingernails I didn't realise it at first either.

We do a house a week. We straighten every house with the cordless planer. Been using the same planer for 3 years... never had an issue with power or run time. 1 battery per house at most and no bloody cords having to walk back throigh doors where you can just skip through the frame when done to check the other side of the wall if needed.

Good review as always.. Is it me or does it piss you off also because you have a good makita 18/36v tool (or anything else) and then outcomes the new BL model.. Very tempting.. But, expensive upgrade.. Such is life.

I've been waiting on this one gents. I have the Milwaukee. It's ok, but it's brushed and frankly not up to what I expected from them. Seems Makita tools are always smoother running machines, too. Taper that extraction detent lug or the latching piece and it'll be like butter. Yet another tool added to the gotta-have-it list. The wife will be so happy for me................ Ha! Super review, men. Keep up the great work.

What is the dope on the new range of Makita? The new Battery platform XGT. I have always stuck with Makita as they didn't mess around with it to much. The last change was the Star but the new batteries were mostly backwards compatible.

The only reason I have the Dewalt planer, is because I got it for free. Lol. I love it though. Never thought I'd use it as often as I do now. But if it was my choice I'd have the Makita since that's what my main battery platform is.

I've had my Makita 18v planer six years. Apart from a new switch two years ago, never let me down. No way I'd use a mains powered one now - got fed up of the cord snagging at the end of a pass, when planing door edges.

Had mine a week, the chip ejector cap is a bit fiddly but got a knack to it now - I just twist the moveable edge bit of the cap up towards me and pull out. Reattach straight in line with the plastic catch thing and slap it over the catch to click shut (don’t know if that made any sense whatsoever!) Awesome planer though.

As a Milwaukee lover but user of Milwaukee and Makita I have to say it's really frustrating that Milwaukee doesn't have a good planer. They have all these great framing and fit of tools literally everything you need drops saws framing gun finishing gun etc but they don't have a powerful planer which I'm sure they could make. And I can't go Makita only either because they really lack all the guns. Come on Milwaukee show us your king and give us a crazy powerful compact fuel planer. Great review guys love all your videos. I'll probably end up getting this

I put an eBay battery converter on it to use my dewalt 18-20v batteries on it works flawlessly love this thing and it’s cheaper then the dewalt and rebates deeper and goes to 3mm dewalts 2mm--if it doesn’t clog up first...it will!!

Solid review as always guys. Have the original brushed model myself and am very happy with it. Trouble will be is nobody in their right mind will be upgrading. Going slower on a pass is no big drama in the game of when you do need to plane something down. However if someone doesn't own a planer and is in the Makita platform then if the price difference isn't too juicy the Brushless will be the way to go. Thumbs up and keep the content coming! Still waiting for a battery nailer from Makita - They filed for patents in Feb 2020 for a framing nailer, fingers crossed!
