I have been watching your Hero Forge episodes and I have to say as much as I enjoy seeing the models the most educational part has been watching you paint the bases. I am so new the basics you show in painting the bases are so helpful. There seems to be so many option. Bellow is what I have found so far. It would be cool to see an episode or so on just painting bases and showing how these affects alter the outcome. Step 1 Prime black or white (or other color) Step 1A1 Zenithal Priming (optional) Dry brush or prime white (or other lighter colors) from above Step 1B1 Slap Job (optional) Dry brush or prime with a light gray (or other light colors) from above followed by white from above Step 2 Base Coat Color flesh and large areas with paint including metallics with a wet pallet (if not covered in contrast paint) Step 2A1 Contrast Paint (optional) Color flesh and large areas in contrast paint Step 2B1 Wash (optional) Aid wash to areas with regular paint (and contrast paints if needed) to darken low areas Step 2B2 (optional) Dab off wash on high areas with a Q-tip Step 3 Build Up Mid-Tones Aid highlights too high spots and edges with a focus around areas you want to draw the eyes to Step 3A1 Wet Blending (optional) Step 3B1 Feathering (optional) Step 3C1 Layering (optional) layer paint in a narrower and narrower area to build up a gradient. Step 3D1 Dry Brushing (optional) Step 3E1 Cross-Hatching (optional) Step 3F1 Stippling (optional) Dab on extreme highlights (final highlights) where the light hits the model Step 3G1 Glazing (optional)

Hey man, firstly thanks so much for watching my videos. In terms of observations, you’re so right. The method of priming and the then basecoating is a large part of the decision making process and can have a massive difference on the end result. It would make an interesting video for sure. As you’ve probably noticed from my videos I prefer to always prime with black and then add a zenithal spray of light grey from above. The reason for this is it basically keeps my options open to any of the routes you mentioned. If I want, I can just go with solid base colours and shade and layer. Or I could go with contrasts (like this video) and use the zenithal. Or glaze, or layer or even a combination of everything. I find doing the zenithal prime route gives me total freedom to how I approach the mini and even let’s me change my mind if I get inspired when I come to paint it. Thanks

This is great! For the red armor panels....is it really only zenithal Prime and Fleshtearers Red? No extra layering of red, no extra edge highlighting? It cannot be that simple...can it? I've held off painting my World Eaters because I have not found a red that I feel I could properly apply. I think I could actually do this!!!
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Yes, that’s all there was to it. Zenithal plus contrast. It’s something I had been wondering ever since contrast got released, so this was a good excuse to test it. Give it a try yourself and let me know how you get on 👍🏻
@Grego7412369 Жыл бұрын
I recently tired citadel contrast paints for my first time. I have horrible brush strokes on the model. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Well, there could be a few possible problems. The first thing to say is not all colours in the contrast range behave the same way. Some are easier to use than others. There are ones which are very thick and if you’re not very careful with how it’s applied it will gloop up and collect in areas you don’t want. For those, my advice would be to thin with some medium to make them “faster” and then apply as multiple coats rather than just the one hit. Another possibility is you’re overworking the paint. That means you’re still running your brush through it on the surface while it’s starting to dry. Solution to this is usually to work on smaller areas at a time and be in a particular direction so that you don’t go over the same area twice. Again thinning with medium can help here as it may give you longer to work with the paint before it starts to dry. Finally, some colours again can be difficult over smoother flatter areas. For these you need to work from the middle out and use the advice above and you should find the water marks and streaks are reduced

Awesome. Im surprised at how easy that armour is aswell. Id be struggling not to slip but
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You could always do the red armour first and then the other details if you’re worried about painting over the primer by mistake. But if you take your time you’ll see it’s not that tricky to keep things neat. Thanks for watching though, appreciate it 👍🏻

You know HeroQuest is Warhammer right? It was Games Workshop teamed up with.. MB Games? So everything can be made out of modern Warhammer. They even have done some Heroquest things, although it may be called Warhammer Quest now.

Absolutely, I know HeroQuest and Space Crusade were the pre-cursor to all Warhammer. But the classic simplicity of the HeroQuest format makes it so timeless. I simply want a modern set of minis for the game I love :)

@@Stuffandstuff974 completely agree, I think they would have been far better releasing Space Crusade in the States and HeroQuest in Europe. Mind you, I’m sure GW would have wanted some royalties from Space Crusade being re-released, given it has space marines in it
