@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you very much for this. It was really helpful. Something that I may have missed and wanted to ask is can I just use paint and thin it to use as a wash? Because from the information in the introduction, it felt like I can just thin the paint to varying degrees and that degree would determine potency. Is that correct, or have I misunderstood something? I apologize if this is a very newbie question, but I am only just starting on my first paint project.

Excellent " tutorial" on washes, especially for people like myself who have had a long sabbatical from modeling only to return to an entirely new dimension of materials I have never seen before.. Besides getting to know how to use these , the primary problem is sourcing. I only have one hobby shop where I live and they primarily are RC but have recently added a small section for plastic model enthusiast . Fortunately they are stocking a small variety of brands of paint which are currently serving my learning curve needs. The rest of materials I'll need to locate on line sources. I also build primarily aircraft so this also narrows the field. This video is a great baseline video. Thanks for sharing.

@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Contrast route for tyranids would be perfect. They have so much awesome texture. If you go with a cream primer (something like wraithbone) and then thin your contrasts 50:50 with contrast medium you’ll get a much smoother result. If it’s a bit too light you can always add a second coat and strengthen it. But I find 90% of contrasts are too potent straight out the bottle

You know, back in the day, instead of shades and washes I used to paint the chainmail black and dry brush with an appropriately dark metallic silvery colour. For plate armour I mixed black in with the silver to get a dark finish and the lightly brush with the same silver over the top, you know. Didn't spend as much on paints either.

Absolutely, and I often still use that method myself, depending on the model. It gives a great result and is one of the methods I'm going to be including in my dry brushing video. Washes are great when you want to be more focused on a particular area and drybrushing might be too messy for surrounding details. They can also provide options for tinting and blending too. Thanks for watching and even more so for subscribing. Really great to have you onboard Yeah, speed paints do seem to have a characteristic in that they can be "reactivated" for a period after they've dried but not fully cured. I first discovered this when I accidently disturbed a layer as I was trying to go over it with another colour. It something I need to experiment with a bit more before I commit to it being a good thing or a bad thing. Another wonderful instruction/asmr video. Question though, can you paint figures in great detail with just one brand? Citadel for instance? Or is it recommended to sometimes have a different brand of wash/ink/shade for an optimum result due to the different brand being slighty better for specific jobs?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching That's a fair question, the simple answer is "absolutely" The longer answer is, there's really no rules to any of this. Lots of people like a particular brand and will use nothing but those paints. Others (like me) just like trying different things and seeing how they'll turn out. So, I'm forever collecting a new paint, or wanting to try a different brand. After a while you will find that all brands have their "gems" and "duds" of their ranges. For example, I absolutely LOVE Two Thin Coats White Star and hate GW's whites. But then I equally love Scale75's Flat Black. It's so unlike anyone else's black, with it's ultra matte finish, but many people would hate that. So, really it's all about You do You. I recommend trying different stuff just because it's fun to discover new things. But certainly dont ever feel there's anything wrong with just using one brand. We're truly spoilt with the quality of paint available now, that amazing minis are possible with any of the major brands. :) Happy painting
@bemindful924 Жыл бұрын
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you for the elaborate response! Clearly Im still a novice but I'm curious to learn what it takes to grow a dislike for a specific kind of paint from a certain brand. @BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Thank you GW washes are very good and they’ve recently improved their recipe, but that does seem to have put the price up. They’ve even reduced the size of their pots too 😞 Army Painter washes are also very good and they have colours many other ranges don’t. Their price is a lot more reasonable too. Their downside is they do tend to dry with a glossy finish and require a thin coat of a matte varnish to knock it back. Hope that helps a bit
@chrisupton3592 Жыл бұрын
Great video, I love how much depth you go into to give a real understanding of how and why things behave as they do. Having said that, I'm ALWAYS confused when I see someone shading large areas and somehow still ending up with a lovely matt finish. When I try that my miniatures come out a little but shiny, which I don't like. As a result I pretty much always limit myself to recess shading, or tidying things back up with a more base paint. Am I doing something wrong?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Firstly, thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it. So, I’m terms of shiny results when using washes. It’s down to an ingredient they have in them which make them flow off raised areas. The biggest culprit for them drying super glossy is not being shaken enough before applying. If they’re not fully mixed, that agent in them will settle on the top. A bit like an oil slick and when it dries it give it a glossy look. Some colours of washes / contrast / speed paints etc are just awkward and will always dry with a slight gloss. For those, all you can do is accept it and apply a light coat of a matte varnish and carry on. If you have an airbrush. A great tip is to spray a light coating of Lahmian Medium over the top, as that will dull down the shine without being too overpowering to the rest of you mini
@chrisupton3592 Жыл бұрын
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Awesome, thanks so much for the reply! I will definitely try those tips out. Well, the shaking and varnishing first as I don't have an airbrush and find the idea of it a bit daunting. In fact if you want any suggestions for future topics, I'd love to see one on airbrushing to explain why and how to do it! 🙂
@chrisupton3592 Жыл бұрын

Can you do this washes technique with thinning normal acrylic paint? Or repeat the constrat effect with normal paint? Still waiting for my washes paint set to come so I'm looking for alternative ways.
@vinhiem696211 ай бұрын
How do you attach your models with bases to your painting sticks? Do you use some kind of putty or maybe magnets? I've been considering putting magnets on my figures to do my work and for later convenience, but I worry that my models will get pulled together if they get close to each other. I feel like this might be extra worrying with slotta models like the second goblin in this video since the magnets wouldn't be centered.

New to the hobby,so games-workshops contrast paints are washes?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the definition I set out in the video, I think it’s fair to say they are washes. They just happen to be extra potent so as to stain the top surface too. Once thinned down they function just the same as “normal” washes. Basically makes them really versatile but I don’t think anyone ever tells people they don’t just have to be used straight from the bottle and slapped all over the model
@Fatboyni6 ай бұрын
Silly question can you mix speed paints like you can do normal paints? As in you only have a starter set so you do not have all the colours you need at hand.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides6 ай бұрын
Not a silly question. That’s a really good question. The answer is yes. Yes you can mix speed paints together with other speed paints to make different colours and tones. Just make sure you only mix same brands together, as speed / contrast style paints have very particular chemical makeups and they don’t react well to being imbalanced. And you can’t mix speed paints with normal acrylics for this reason too. Thanks for watching 👍

@hvafoohfwhorneman7 ай бұрын
is it not possible to attain the same result with normal paints if thinned correctly...?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides7 ай бұрын
Great question. So, yes it is absolutely possible to produce similar results with normal paints, however, these paints are specifically formulated and developed to be easier to use and more effective in achieving that result. I find washes, contrasts, inks etc to be invaluable tools in my painting process. If you’ve not tried one yet, I would highly recommend you do. Of course, they don’t suit everyone and many people prefer to paint with just normal paints. It’s all about finding what works best for you and how you want to paint 🙂
@iancoggeshall90575 ай бұрын
How do you know if your wash is low or high potency? Some of the washes I use can leave almost a matte finish which in turn ruins the final product.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides5 ай бұрын
The best and most reliable answer is to test it. I either apply it to a patch of paint I have on my glove already from painting the mini or you can have a scrap mini / piece of sprue etc primed so that you can try paints before applying them to your mini. Testing is by far the most important step in painting. Why risk putting anything on your mini without being 100% sure how it's going to behave first?
@BoardOfView3 ай бұрын
Can I apply the citadel shade over the miniature without the prime? The miniature is raw. Without color or anything. Just how the game came.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides3 ай бұрын
No All minis need to be primed before you apply any paints to them. Otherwise the paint won’t bond and will rub off
@noctiscreo793 Жыл бұрын
This is great. But how do you fix a mistake made on an area that has been painted with contrast paints? Repainting white and re-applying the contrast paint leaves tea-stains/rings. Thinning down the contrast seems to work better but still not ideal.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
So mistakes can be tricky but what you need to do is repaint the most logical section back to the base colour and then reapply the contrast. You can’t just try and do a patch because, like you say, it’ll look out of place. You need to do an area which has obvious edges. This can be an armour panel, or shirt sleeve that sort of thing. In your experience, may you recommend a "wash" (or technique) that does NOT stain, but primarily shades the recesses and leaves the highlights/base alone? Your thoughts are welcomed.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides10 ай бұрын
Great question. I would say if you’re looking something which is a pure recess shade then you need to look at a different technique and that would be oil washing. I didn’t cover it in this video because I feel it warrants a video all its own. The process is to thin down oil paints using a solvent. Then you can apply the wash all over the model or be precise, it’s up to you. The cool thing with oil washing though, is you can remove the staining from higher areas or anywhere you don’t want it, many hours afterwards, simply by using a Qtip and a touch of solvent. The downside of oil washes though, are they do take a long time to dry and they will need sealing before painting over the top or gaming with the model. Hope that helps, and thanks for giving me another video topic 👍

I will say, the transparents and the washes from Pro Acryl are not the same product. Pro Acryl have a whole Wash line.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides11 ай бұрын
And you are absolutely right 👍 At the time of recording I didn’t have any PA washes, but the transparent shown served a purpose in that they can still be used as a wash. They just need to be considered in terms of their potency and adjusted as discussed in the video. In their case, they are a bit more of an ink really and great for glazing but with the benefit of some medium you can give them the “wash” properties.

As soon as I applied the wash it ruins the paint. I'm starting with the GW Age of Sigmar kit and that earthshade make the minis very dark. Do you think I can dilude it using GreenStuffWorld Acrilic medium? Cant find the proper medium to buy where I live.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides6 ай бұрын
If a wash is having too strong an effect, then yes you should for sure thin it down. Ideally you want to thin a wash with the medium from the same brand because each manufacturer has their own paint chemistry and their medium will be perfectly matched to their paints and washes. Not all acrylic mediums are the same, just as not all acrylic paints are the same. For thinning agrax earthshade you are wanting to use Lahmian Medium from GW. If you let me know where you're located, I can try and find you some options for where you can get some.

You're wrong. Changing gravity isn't a recipe for disaster, it just requires a more deliberate approach. As the medium thickens you can walk the pigment around for a more purposeful result. Obviously every dimension you add increases time and effort, but you're missing a weird angle to use washes intuitively. This expands in tone and timbre as you move to other mediums outside the safety of acrylic media.

Have enjoyed and liked. I know this vid is specific to washing etc but you don't touch on other qualities that some ranges promise. Quickshade for example. Isn't it meant to be formulated so that pigment is drawn toward thicker pools as it dries providing a gradient? You do say use the correct medium and those special properties are correctly a subject of a more specific vid. Not questioning your knowledge! Just sounding off as the internet demands. Excellent content as always

Thanks man Yes, as you say this video is really meant to help people start using washes and point out that the “new” types of paints, contrast, speed etc are really just thick washes. I didn’t mention specific characteristics of each brand because I didn’t want it to turn into a review video but just stay as an overview. It’s the hardest part of making videos like this, deciding what to cover and where to stop. On the plus side, it does mean there’s always room for another video 😉 Cheers for watching, appreciate it

Great guide! Do you know how strong are Vallejo washes? Do i need to use Thinner Medium?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides5 ай бұрын
Thank you The answer to your question unfortunately is it depends on what you’re wanting to do with them. Generally I find them good shaders and light staining. So middle strength I guess you could say. Some colours will always be stronger than others. So, my rule of thumb is always give it a test first over the paint colour you want to use it on. My hand is usually caked in paint anyway so it’s pretty easy to test a wash over the colour I need. If you do have this then just paint a base or something and then test the wash on that. If it’s too strong, add a touch of medium and test again. Then you know exactly how it’s going to be have before you risk it on you mini 👍
