Artists shine given restrictions and limitations. Subtlety and nuance are more easily found in minimalism than excess. That's the beauty of Brushy One String, whose sound is make by one big fat E-string and a voice so rich and full, all it wants is a bit of rhythmic and melodic underpinning.
Brushy One String is from Jamaica, and his "Chicken In The Corn" video has been viewed nearly nine million times. I first came upon his music at globalFEST 2014. He even broke his one string that night, but he smiled and warmed our hearts. He's a deeply spiritual man who tells stories of his musical father and describes how proud his mom and dad would be of his fame if they were around. (He was orphaned at a young age.) He's part Delta Blues with a bit of old-school soul, and he beats a pulse and rhythm on the guitar body that's infectious and simple. That's the beauty of Brushy One String: It's all essence, and everything's essential.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

He sings, writes his song, and has creativity incorporated a one string guitar into his performance, and has put out an album, where do you get lazy out of someone who is original, and has made a name for himself using KZbin. He is using the one string as a bass, and percussion.

He did the most songs’ bass progression, “classically”. And the point is his great groove. I guess he gets a whole band’s sound in his head, and he uses his own way to explain that. Cause you can hear he sings some fake phrase between rap phrases, sounds like there is another chorus singing for him. And he use his own words scatting to performance such as a guitar solo.

This guy is fantastic. It's amazing what a good musician can do, given very little to work with. When I used to jam with jazz guys, sometimes we did a head-cutting kind of thing that was a "one-chord challenge," which vamped a single chord with a turnaround to see how many ideas you could pull out without changes. This guy goes one further -- one string, one line, no chords. And it sounds fantastic.
