I would have to agree with what you've said. I grew up in the classic era of Mortal Kombat. Starting with Mortal Kombat 3. I grew to love the original timeline and its events. In my eyes, it will always be my favorite. I feel I know who Sindel was, to me. While I do not like her retcon, I will say, that even though it is one dimensional, it is an interesting take on the character, despite the fact that I don't like it. I said interesting. Not good or bad but interesting. It is a different and unique take for the character, in my eyes, despite my disapproval.

The only reason this happened is because Sindel has NEVER been herself since MK9 - She was brainwashed by Quan Chi and was used to kill off half the cast, painting her character in a negative light. Even though it is mentioned several times and her ending in mk9 explicitly states she was "Brainwashed", the negative reception to the murder scene probably informed the Retcon. The whole "She looks evil so lets make her evil" thing is such tripe! MOST OF THE CAST COULD BE EVIL BY THAT LOGIC! In Mk4, Tanya was designed to look relatively innocent and unassuming, which made her betrayal all that more effective. It's also the writing, which seems to force all the characters to be either GOOD or BAD with no middle ground. This really limits their options, and it's sad because it makes character less complex. Lets just hope and pray that the rejection of this retcon will allow Sindel to be her true, good self in the next game! :O

Cyrax, who is a cyborg bounty hunter that looks evil, is given a moment of clarity and is explicitly treated as a noble martyr after he's freed. Kuai Liang dresses like his asshole evil brother and gets a Bond Villain scar but keeps up with the heroes. If they want to change things to match, why not let us play as Sindel with that brainwashing truly broken? Let her look as she used to when she was alive?

Imagine if it turned out the Great Kung Lao turned out to be evil the whole time and turned out all the lore we knew since the original trilogy was FALSE? I understand that it’s a new timeline and they should be allowed to give them new interpretations (especially characters that came after MK3) but to change the backstory of a character is to basically wage war with fans .. they had all these characters from the 3D era to give storylines too but instead of using Tanya for treachery they use D’Vorah .. instead of having Noob kill Scorpion to give fans a full circle moment they use D’Vorah .. instead of having let’s say Hotaru come in and fucking invade all the realms to enforce order and be the big bad they introduce Kronika and reset the timeline (which is the most annoying and lazy thing they could have done cause it makes it seem like now they can just get rid of the story they shitted together whenever cause now we have “Titans” 🙄) I can literally go on all day about how they’re digging this story into the ground but they don’t care cause they already got our money 🤷🏾‍♂️

In the current timeline she is around Cassie's age so more than twenty years younger than the "veterans" (Johnny, Sonya, Jax, Sub-Zero, etc) while in the original timeline, she wasn't that young compared to Sub-Zero. She was younger of course but I don't think she was twenty years younger than him. It's troubling me. And of course her story in MK11 is...meh...I mean, Raiden killing her instead of Sub-Zero. A bit weird of a choice. Also, MKX potential was wasted. At the end of MK 2011, Earthrealm was in a really bad state, only 3 defenders left while Netherrealm's forces increased and Outworld only lost 4 important people: Shao Kahn, Sindel, Motaro and Shang Tsung. Sure they lost their ruler but Mileena could have taken the throne and then attack Earthrealm. That could have been the perfect time to reintroduce Fujin, Bo'Rai Cho and even Kai! Like, Raiden calls for Bo'Rai Cho's help, like he'd have to train Kai and Johnny Cage for example. Kenshi was there so it's cool. Then you could have introduce new characters, maybe a new Nightwolf. Etc, etc. Anyway. Just like you, I could spend the whole day talking about it. It just shows how correct you are about the story being digged into the ground.

It technically is pretty bad. Disregarding and ignoring the 3D era characters minus a few like Kenshi as the ST did with the Prequels, wasted plot points and storyline, sindel's retcon, turned characters into jokes as the Sequels did with Luke Skywalker. I would compare it to the relationship between the Midway timeline and the Star Wars EU. A large and overabundant mess, but as 4thSnake said, he rather take campy overacting, as I would prefer a bloated mess that was the Star Wars EU over the plotholes and terrible retcons made by the Sequel Trilogy, and MK11. The Sequels I ignore and pretend doesn't exist

Retconning character is what they are known to do. They retconned Raiden not only once but twice in the older games. In MK1 Raiden is a cocky God who turn himself into a mortal so to enter the MK tournament to prove how inferior humans are to God, in MKII he turn good and somehow became less cocky cause he knew he is no match for human as evident by Liu Kang winning the MK tournament and decided to enter the Outworld tournament in hope of learning Liu Kang's potential. Then in the third game, they turn him into movie/tv show Raiden where "Oh no I lost my power cause Outworld is merging with Earth Realm now and because I'm the protector of Earth Realm for some reason it is not my duty to help the mortals fight their battles, plus I had no powers when I'm in Outworld" like wtf you just came back from the Outworld tournament like one game ago.

But if it makes you better, think of it this way: Because of Kronika messing around with the timelines, she accidentally summoned a Sindel from another timeline where she killed Jerrod and married Shao Kahn without a fuss. The old Sindel still exists, but this is not her. This would also explain why D’Vorah said that she killed Jerrod when Sindel said that she killed him.

I may be months late for this but I was very disappointed in her retcon. It kinda hurt, to be honest. Here we had a mother character who had a wonderful kingdom only for it to be conquered and forced into a marriage with the one who destroyed it. So she commits not alive to escape bit in the process , abandoning her daughter to be raised by said monster. Who , mind you, made a clone of her with tarkatan dna Incase she stepped out of line. Said clone was her replacement but she had her own compelling story and issues but that's for another day. Then when she was brought back to her hell , she was brainwashed and force to fight her now adult child and her companions . And one she was free , she was left with the aftermath of both her brainwashing , the broken remains of her kingdom, and her estranged and traumatized child whom she has missed many years of. Sindel before the retcon hurt many people but she was deeply hurt too. She was growing with every installment and her child was right there by her side. But she wasn't a heless dmanael in distress and she worked hard , HARD , to regain the trust and feel deserving of the live and admiration her people held for her and to be a better example for kitana. She was no one to mess with and was a formidable fighter. She was admirable and had a complete arc in the games before. She was a loving warrior mom that stopped taking crap and didn't hold back to do what she felt was right, to keep from turning into who she once was. I loved that she was a beautiful , skilled combatant , well aged woman who was a strong mother in a video game where they doht do that often. Ans they didn't portray her motherhood as a weakness or a liability, but something that was a part of her and helped her grow stronger. Ans she was all this while rocking her goth look. Which had nothing to do with her personality but her former death and simple personal taste. Because fashion does not always equal personality and alignment. This retcon sounds like they took one look at her and judged her by her appearance and nothing more. Ans it all just feels like a slap in the face. So yes. I am very disappointed, very dissatisfied at this disingenuous disembowelment if one of my favorite characters.

You know. There is one thing rather distressing about the mentality of "Only the main story matters" like you said. It actually promotes people to care less about the side characters and promotes the storywriter to not care about side characters. It happened with Mortal Kombat. It happened with BlazBlue. It happened with Tekken 7. And in my opinion, I think it's time that fighting games should give more care on the character integrity, not just how they function in combat. Soul Calibur 6 was a good step in that, and I hope more fighting games will follow. Unfortunately, a lot of fighting gamers think less about plots and characterization and only thinks of how much asses they can pwn with that character. Now this is not to disrespect a character or a real life person, but when the infamous EVO 37 moment arrive, who do you see in the screen: Is it Ken the character (who's actually in good graces with Chun-li)? Or is it Daigo Umehara? For a lot of people, it's Daigo. That's how a lot of people see in Fighting games. And strange thing is, I thought this notion has been trashed away with how Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite failed. But still! A fighting game is more than just an EVO or E-Sport sensation. It's about time people should learn that. It's good to have people like you who like the characters for the stories. However, there is a misconception going on that those who do that aren't real fighting game fans. People like you are more likely to be ridiculed for 'caring for something that doesn't matter: Story in a fighting game'. I should know, because I was once on the victim of THAT when I tried to defend my favored character... within BlazBlue.

I'm a massive lore junky for so many things. Warner Brother and Netherealm ruining Mortal Kombat is just so annoying, the Cage saga, the lack of development for Kung Jin. The bad writing and nurffing of so many main characters just so the Kombat Kids could beat them all in MKX instead of putting them in logical scenarios like a good writer would do.
