Brussels: Belgium-Sweden match abandoned after two Swedes shot dead

Forensic police surveyed the scene of a shooting where two Swedes were shot dead in the centre of the city by a gunman who federal prosecutors said claimed to be inspired by Islamic State.

The Euro 2024 qualifier match between Sweden and Belgium at King Badouin Stadium, about 5km away from the shooting, was abandoned at half-time and the crowd was instructed to stay inside the stadium. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said the suspect remained at large and told residents to stay indoors. “Go home and stay at home until the threat has been eradicated,” they said. Belgium has raised its terror alert to the highest level in the capital.

Reminds me of that friendly match between Germany & France that was going on at the Stade de France when the Paris terrorism attacks happened in November 2015. One of the attacks (4 areas of the city were targeted that night) occurred just outside of the Stade de France and two explosions could be heard on the live broadcast of the match. The players from both France & Germany, in addition to the fans, weren’t informed by UEFA officials about the ongoing terrorism attacks in Paris until AFTER the match was DONE!!
