Brussels Comic Walk - Belgium and Comics: A Short History

Brussels is home to the largest amount of comic book authors and artists anywhere. The city has a deep history with comics, and throughout the city are enormous murals painted all over buildings. You can spend a day walking and see them, though it may take more than one day! This video represents just a few. I will add the link for the city map of the route below. Enjoy!

Besides the Belgian-Franco school there is also a Belgian-Flemish school with pioneers such as Willy Vandersteen (Suske en Wiske) Marc Sleen (Nero) Jef Nys (Jommeke) and Pom (Piet Pienter en Bert Bibber). All deceased. I only mentioned their most important comics series. Pom and Sleen didn't want their comics to be continued after their retirement, Jommeke is continued by other authors and Studio Vandersteen already became a comics factory long before his death. Most of these comics were never translated and/or made it abroad as they were too typical "Flemish". Nero has his museum close to the Brussels Comics Museum.

6:18 No, in Dutch they are called "De Smurfen" and in French "Les Schtroumpfs". And they would be living in the Belgian Ardennes, the only place in Belgium where you would find large forests.
