How risky was a night in a Common Lodging House? Thieves stealing your food and clothes! But that's not all - cheap beds for the poor and homeless meant dirty and overcrowded accommodation where violent fights were frequent and disease ever present. They were familiar in Victorian Britain and into the Edwardian Era. In this true documentary account from 1910 in Manchester, we join a vicar disguised as a tramp who visits a doss house, meets its poverty stricken residents and experiences the evil conditions for himself.

Another great Edwardian presentation. I can't imagine living like that ,but it was better than sleeping outside. I think I would drink as well. They still have shelters here in America and I would like to think it was a bit better. I met some women who lived in one and they said stealing was the worst problem. They knew who was doing it. Please with this being holiday time so they are collecting for the homeless please buy soap,shampoo and conditioner as well as food as it makes them feel so much better, thank you. I hope you don't mind me doing this but I just feel it's important.

God bless you for thinking of others and actually doing something about it. Something I have found people use is baby wipes as well as other hygiene products. Great for adults as well as babies. Also as far as food items peanut butter for those who can eat it. It contains plenty of protein. In fact, when things were tight for us a few years back, we pretty much survived on it. I do not know if anyone already mentioned it but hand sanitizer s handy as well. Stay safe folks. God bless.

I remember reading about a liberal MP called Fenner Brockway, he was from Cornwall I believe. He was active in the early 1900s, and when he first visited London, he was shocked by what he saw, he had no idea that such appalling conditions existed in this country, and least of all in the capital of the Empire.

Many slept sat down against a tight rope strung across and would sleep leaning against this. I wonder if although it would be not as comfortable as lying down if that was better as you'd have to do that in your clothes and only in your own filth rather than someone elses and not as many bugs. Must have been awful. I thought I had it bad when I got Pneumonia a few weeks back from damp and mouldy flat and not looking after myself properly due to depression,i'm not entirely sure how I got it but living how I was didn't help. When I watch how these wretched unfortunates lived but had no choice it makes me feel guilty. I've had my hot water and heating put back on for the winter as It'll only get worse,do not want pneumonia again I was in hospital for a week. Just have to try and live better I have it better than these poor people back then..

I'm scrolling through the comments and i ran across both of yours, Paulus: have you gotten checked for hepC? I got it in my late 20's (before they knew what it was). One of the first signs was i came down with pneumonia and began to be depressed all the time. At that time you had to have a liver biopsy. It was called non-A, non-B. I kept contracting bronchitis and pneumonia. It wasn't until i was 52 that they developed a cure. I'm never hardly sick now or depressed. I realize depression is complicated but it's exacerbated by illness. Anyway, it you haven't been tested it's an idea.

In what universe do you live? Shelter workers BEG people to come in off the streets. They are provided with food and medical care, and the opportunity to move into subsidized housing programs. The people you see on the streets have legal options - most are addicts or mentally ill. THAT is why they are on the streets.

One of the very first images is a sign giving prices in cents, so clearly not the UK. Makes it difficult to be sure which, if any, of the images are of the UK.

During those times, people didn’t associate with people from other ‘classes.’ Therefore, a regular person would see really rich people and really poor people, but not know much about how they actually lived.

@FactFeast

There are no photos or drawings of that specific building to my knowledge. These are mostly images from East End London, but more or less contemporary and hundreds of lodging houses would have appeared much the same across the country, outwardly at least.

The thumbnail picture is a well known photo of a dosshouse in East London (probably Whitechapel or Spitalfields) at the top of the lamp it looks like 'St Geo Chambers' ?. So it could be Stepney or Cable Street area. A census would be a way to find out the actual location.
@FactFeast

It’s the East End, as you suggest, though I’m unable read the lamp signage at the very top. Used here to illustrate the subject matter.

Just goes to show, that no matter how bad things get now, interest rates rising, prices rising, cut backs needing to be made on family expenditures, maybe postponing a new car or holiday, it won’t be anywhere near as bad as this. Appreciate what these people went through and what they had to do just to survive.
