Lot of musicians are super nice. I did a cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World next to a very heavy band in the studio next to us. We walked out and the other band was there, the lead singer said "we stopped playing while you were playing Tears for Fears so we could listen in, that was so fucking fun, loved it" and the band guys shook our hands to talk. For sure, I recently went down the Javier rabbit-hole and I think he's now one of my all-time favourite players. His ability to be either a rock-solid "2nd Tosin" or to really have his own voice in AAL is insane enough, but as you say, Mestís is such an incredible band that it doesn't feel at all like a side project, more like a perfect fusion of all JR's influences and ideas fully realised. And don't even get me started on his Argentine-rooted nylon string stuff - I've been playing my Spanish acoustic so much for fun (instead of it just collecting dust that I'm dangerously close to going on Thomann and buying a Classica 7 & 8 string nylon just so I can do a really bad impression of him, literally just to entertain myself (but no, I have to pay for "rent" and "food" like a chump) He's the real deal for sure

My favorite thing about these guys (besides the obvious) is that they thrive on the absolute cutting edge, pushing genre boundaries, exemplifying the technical and musical merits of metal as art, while eschewing any/all stereotypical metal aesthetic cliches. Lots of metal groups try harder to "be metal" than they try to make good music. By all means, do you. But all the neck tats in the world won't make your shitty band suck less. Meanwhile, look at these monsters.
