Kurt Gerstein, the sixth of seven children of a Prussian middle-class family, was born on the 11 August 1905 in Münster, then part of the German Empire.
Kurt’s mother died when he was young, and his father Ludwig was a harsh authoritarian figure and ardent nationalist who instilled an unwavering patriotism in his children. Ludwig, a former Prussian officer, proudly proclaimed that in his family's genealogical tree there was only Aryan blood and exhorted generations to "preserve the purity of the German race!”
Although an exceptionally bright child, Kurt was a less than ideal student. He skipped classes, ignored his schoolwork, and was even known as a prankster. Despite his flawed scholastic record, he went on to study mining engineering at the universities of Marburg, Aachen, and Berlin, earning his degree in 1931. While studying at Marburg, Gerstein mirrored his father’s chauvinistic attitudes and at his father's request joined Corps Teutonia Marburg, one of Germany’s most ultra-nationalistic fraternities.
Although not exceptionally pious as a boy, Gerstein began to read the Bible while studying at university. His efforts were likely in response to the drinking and carousing he observed among his fellow fraternity members. At Marburg he became active in Christian student and youth movements, supporting the Christian education of young men.
Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came into power in January 1933. Initially, Gerstein felt it was his patriotic duty to support the Nazis and his strong nationalist sentiments drove him to join the Nazi Party in May 1933.
In the following year, Kurt gravitated towards the Confessing Church. This movement opposed the effort to unify the German Protestant churches into a single, pro-Nazi establishment. Despite his father’s disapproval, Gerstein became dedicated to the movement. It was through his involvement with the church that he first came into conflict with the Nazi regime. As the preachings of the Confessing Church failed to square with Nazi doctrine, the German state gradually impinged upon the church and its organizations. Gerstein felt that he had to choose between defending his church and supporting his nation and he chose his church.

Kurt Gerstein was more than willing to reveal Nazi war crimes to the Allies, yet his reports of what happened in the death camps in Poland were largely ignored by Allies. So ironic. Thank you for this eye-opening video.

He wanted to document the crimes against humanity, yet he was ignored and tried as if he committed such atrocities and his importance wasn’t recognized until it was to late. RIP Kurt Gerstein, hopefully in death you wouldn’t be mistreated as you were in life

A man who had gone into the belly of the Beast to bring the rest of the world news of what the Nazis were doing and he was not believed. Worse, I think that there were many who just didn't care or wanted those things to happen to the Jews. Antisemitism was very prevalent then, as it still is now. I pray for the Lord's mercy on him for his taking of his own life. That man suffered greatly during his time on Earth.🙏

Correct. Maybe the Swedish diplomat hated Jews as well and the Vatican, well the Vatican we know has always been anti Jews. They blame them for instance for the killing of Jesus Christ. And during the crusades they not only killed muslims but also many thousands of Jews. From 1945 they helped Nazi's escape from Europe to South America. They were complicit in everything the nazi's did.

It's possibly one of the more tragic stories you have covered. A man of Conscience who did all in his power to stop the madness and was ignored by all he approached for help. There's the argument that he has blood on his hands. A man doing what he had to do so the world would know. How do you stop such a crime from happening again? It doesn't hurt to remember that elections have consequences.

I can only begin to understand his anguish over what he saw, only to be matched buy the utter belief that no-one would do anything. For his final living memory to be that he was classed as a criminal for participating, when clearly he was trying to bring it to an end. His s*icide is regrettable and yet a powerful legacy of a brave but heart broken man.

Yes, some Jews were treated unfairly, but unfortunately, many were communists and partisans of the communist party. What did you expect them to do, roll over like the Russians had just 20years prior? Nein!

A great man. He joins the ranks of Albert Goring and John Rabe who helped many during the war; Goring saved many Jews and Rabe many Chinese. Both were treated shabbily after the war. A reminder that sometimes no good deed goes unpunished

Tragic character and one can only guess what he endured by having to howl with these brutes around him. A good thing that his story is broadcasted, as it shows that at the unlikeliest places, people stood-up against barbarism. He also didn't try to escape after the war and he knew what he was facing, but giving testimonial was more important than his own life. R.I.P. Kurt Gerstein

What a horrific sad and deeply emotional story. A very brave good man surrounded by so much evil, The fact, that they ignored his reports, if they had listened, perhaps so many may have been saved. I can imagine, just how unbelievable this was to them. To see those people smiling, knowing what happened to them, is heartbreaking to watch. Even innocent babies, and people, shocking. This man should be remembered and not forgotten. Despite the risks, he was true to himself and his beliefs. Not everyone in Germany and other districts at the time, supported the Nazis or liked them. Let us not forget, the other often ignored victims of this horrific crime, sadly along with the Jews, such as political opponents, thieves, homosexuals, the ill age and disabled, Jehovah's Witnesses, Gypsies, and many more groups. To forget is a crime, as it is like they never existed at all, and they never suffered. What has man learned from this?. What would you have done in his situation?.

I still try my best to ‘get it’ but fail. I suppose I could understand the fear of the men, but how is it possible to gloat over the murder of women and children when men are biologically programmed to be offended by their harm? There were deep psychological issues we these people apart from the ideological beliefs, and how many out there can still do the same?
