Personally, I liked the management part of the first game, but apparently enough people complained about it being a chore that the devs went in a different direction with DD2.

@@MrStump yeah, but also I don`t even know what they could add/change in the first one, it would just feel like the same game but modded. (for example the combat changes, they are nice, but if DD2 was just DD1 with this combat it would feel kinda cheap)

DD1 had that XCOM element with the Hamlet. But nonetheless, I love the direction they did with DD2 as well.

@@erickfw197 Agreed, and since DD1 already has a huge trove of mods (including fan-made heroes, dungeons, and even a whole campaign), this direction for DD2 was important for standing out more.

This release reminds me of the reaction when Supergiant Games released Transistor after Bastion. People wanted more of the same, the studio did what they themselves wanted to make, there was some grumbling. This one is obviously worsened by the fat "2" after the title but ignoring that, it's a beautifully put together game with about the same amount of quirks and complaints I remember having about DD1's 1.0 release. The only thing I'd see as a direct loss compared to 1 is that the driving just can't be as tense and interesting as the dungeon walking in the first game. Though that's generally secondary to the polish of the atmosphere and combat encounters personally.

I do like the Oregan trail route they did for DD2 and the animations are amazing

There is a slew of new creators making video about the game on its release, glad you are one of them. Ill leave you some tips here if you find yourself struggling: 1. Always upgrade stress healing and healing moves at the begging to help you out, then focus on damage/buffs 2. Make sure to always look into your hero quirks to see their effects 3. Make sure to spend atleast some amount of candles on stagecoach upgrades, these are very crucial for your survival during any region (note that stagecoach items and stage coach upgrades are different) 4. Make sure to always equip combat items before fights, always better to have something on instead of nothing

For me it was the leper. Like he's broken too once you learn how to use him and he really did just make things sit down and not get back up in both dd1 and dd2

Since Dismas and Reynauld are named characters, maybe they were part of the canonical party that killed the heart of darkness in the first game. If so Reynauld would most likely be dead since only one character survives the encounter with the heart. It would also make Dismas an absolute badass, since he's continuing to fight the horrors.

The thing that kept me from fully diving into DD1 was specifically dealing with the in town management. This game for me personally is hitting all of the right spots. Like slay the spire but less rng (at least in terms of every battle the outcome being completely random with the cards). Im seriously loving this game because its combat shines through. The graphics also are a huge improvement and while the carriage was initially off putting i just slow down and plan my route as much as possible. Totally get why people dont like it in comparison to dd1 as that game was super niche for people that liked fully managing heros. But for someone like me i think they nailed it with the different approach. More back to back battles and full combat focus lets me learn the game in the pace i like. Less methodical and more aggresive. The relationship management is something im willing to put up with (at least in comparison to dd1s town management). I also like the fact i can focus on just 4 heroes instead of taking all the hordes of heroes into account in dd1. While DD1 was a game i enjoyed and put roughly 40-50 hours into, this game is one i can see reaching at least the mid 500s. And hopefully red hook isnt put off by the reviews and they keep working to expand the game like they did DD1.

Ahhh... hmm. I liked the first game a lot and the progression in this game just doesn't look as good to me as the first one while the combat is more or less unchanged with minor tweaks. I'll still try it someday but not at $40, the price is going to have to come down significantly for me. In the meantime I'll just play the first one again since I know I like that one.

You should be able to refund the game if you play for less than 2 hours. So you can try it and see for yourself.

There's no controller compatibility. But you can use the trackpad as mouse input and still play.
