In this video, you're going to hear me giving my younger self some much-needed advice.....that if I'd had 20 years ago, I could have saved myself a LOT of time and money.
So...my hope is that you'll enjoy this video as much as all the others...and if you do, please be sure and click like (thank you!) as well as let me know in the comments.

Trent, I'm 22 and trying to find my footing in life. I have a bachelor's of cybersecurity that I lost all passion for but found aviation and I love it! Got my private last thanksgiving and now I'm working on instrument, paying as I go. The biggest stopping point is, like everything in aviation, the insane costs. Your channel is a big inspiration for me and I also have great interest in making money through real estate and investing but feel like I'm at the bottom of a mountain, frozen by the thoughts of how I can climb up. I guess this is all to say I appreciate your videos and the positive growth mindset that you fill all of your videos with. When I get down about flight training or maybe have a bad flight lesson, I find myself watching or rewatching one of your videos and it helps to keep me going. I think any new videos you make in this new style will do well!

If I had one piece of advice its that you should consider flying a marathon not a sprint. If you keep putting effort in and build your log book like a CV I think it will eventually pay off. Find out what aviation businesses are out there and build a CV to match or exceed what they are looking for. Like any business you have to build yourself to be the best possible candidate that comes across their desk. Time on their aircraft types. Experience in something relating to their business. Think of what you would look for if you were trying to hire someone and be that. Also, don't wait for a job listing, find companies that you want to work for, go see them and drop off a resume. Learn about their business, take an interest in not just getting a flying job but in helping them succeed. What difficulties do they face with staffing? What can you do to make their life easier? Sometimes they need someone fast and if your resume is on the desk or they know you, you'll probably get a call.

Hi Trent, I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for sharing your incredible journey as a pilot. I’m currently in the USA, where I began my pilot training journey last June or July. At 43 years old, as a successful A&P mechanic at American Airlines, I was filled with enthusiasm and energy when I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a pilot. Your story truly inspired me to take the leap, as I realized that age, immigrant status, and family commitments should not hold me back from achieving my aspirations. Your success at 53 years old has shown me that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams. With 100 hours of flight training under my belt, I’m more motivated than ever to achieve my goals. My ultimate aim is to join Skywest, drawn to the opportunities it offers. While my journey may take longer than your impressive 91-day feat, I’m committed to making it happen. Thank you for being a beacon of inspiration and encouragement for aspiring pilots like myself. Wishing you continued success in all your aviation endeavors! Alex Alesi

Hey Trent! I’m 17 and currently in a ground school course working towards my PPL. I have the goal of flying corporate, flying is always something i’ve wanted to do. I’m also really interested in home renovation and when i’m not in the air, I want to be flipping properties. Watching your videos has shown me that the stereotypical “went to so and so university”, isn’t the only path into aviation. And there’s a wonderful community of people behind it. Thank you for continuing to post on this channel, because there are a lot of us that are inspired by it.

Great Video! Currently a PPL with 120 hours. I started a business a couple years ago doing Automotive Window tinting and have been paying for all my training through the business. Doing everything as cheap as possible flying a beat up 150 with a Freelance CFI, and been living in a van to get rid of my rent expense, lol. Glad to have picked aviation as a career due to work/ life balance and income that will allow me to invest into real estate some day such as yourself. Hey Trent, I imagine that there is 1) A lot of people interested in aviation but not interested in flying for a living, 2) a whole world of non pilot careers/businesses in aviation 3) most importantly, an even bigger world of opportunity to start bringing the current world of aviation into the unimaginable future of aviation. Should be tons of content for your core audience considering most pilots are probably entrepreneurial by nature. Whatever you do.. I’ll probably be watching

Trent, been along the journey with you since your first video. At 44 I was in a similar space, returning to aviation, after another career. In the past year, I regained currency, got my CPL, my CMEL, and was in the hunt for a job to make the transition to the airlines. I have since been blessed with a “golden egg position” getting SIC type rated and a full time position flying a corporate jet for a Part. 91 operation. We only average about 10 hours a month, but it is filling my want and need to be flying professionally in a jet, and paying six figures to make my life financially free. All that being said, with so much free time, many of the other pilots I meet on our travels suggest getting into something to fill my time (other than just contracting out to other part 91 operations) and helping me be even for financially secure. This is why this video here, and potential follow-on’s are very interesting to me. Looking forward to seeing what’s to come.

Hey Trent. I know this isn’t your most current video, but I just now got a chance to go back and watch it. I have wanted to fly since I was a kid. Now, at 41, I’m a home inspector. Not necessarily a pro services biz, but a service business none the less. There are things I like about owning this business, but the paycheck is not among them. And expansion means my margins decrease… without more details, I wanted to tell you that this video of yours hits very close to home. I’m close to having my first class medical on hand (long story there, too), and I hope to start flight training within the next 30 days or so. Would love to hear more from you about your side hustles (about to go watch that video now). At any rate, I love your content. Keep it up.

Good summary. I started an engineering consulting business 4 years ago and landed 3 really good contracts and 2 top name auto manufactures giving industrial manufacturing support. You are so right, the services business path is astonishingly hard. Revenues can and were slightly sinful, but what when into it was brutal...exhausting. People often overlook or don't even really know true "Overhead" costs. For example, at one of my career jobs, budgeting project costs for cap ex improvements, management had us take wage rate and multiple by 5 to forecast TOTAL labor cost. That is only labor! Most don't get that! So you are providing a service for how much profit! HAHAHA! Then another unknown is that when you are giving (providing said actual "service") the one service, you are drumming up to land the next job or deal. Painfully exhausting. Anyways, Love your videos. Seems like some of us reach quasi life apex's then stop to finally breath, and then adjust our drive to k.i.s.s. (keep it stupid simple)! Hahaha!

Trent, I’m 100% interested in hearing more about this. This has been one of my hurdles In the transition to professional pilot. I’ve worked in the Aviation space for more than 20 years as an A&P. One of the things that my peer group has suggested is that maybe I open my own Aviation maintenance shop/FBO. My sense is that would be a surefire way to derail my plan of flying professionally in terms of time and money. My thoughts are to steer clear of anything that doesn’t move me closer to the goal post efficiently and quickly. I am definitely interested in hearing more about things that I can do alongside of being a full-time CFI that will keep me from taking such a large pay when I step into that full-time, thanks for what you do. Keep up the good work.

Hey Trent! Really enjoying the content you’ve created on your journey. I’ve read Atomic Habits and not only is it cool story, but it totally makes sense how you’ve attacked your flight training. I’m starting my journey to become a commercial pilot, but I’m coming from the world of film and television-- Just wanted to share a tip. Depending on the camera you’re using (perhaps it’s Sony) there is a few Auto Focus functions… AF by zones, some have an eye lock ability, etc. I’m noticing in almost all of your posts that the AF is getting confused and switching focus to the framed picture just behind your head to the left, because the AF is detecting another face and eyes to snap focus to, then it switches back to your face which makes for a lot of out of focus content. My suggestion, I would just switch out that framed “5000 fastest growing companies - 5000 Inc.” magazine for another framed (non-face image). Just my two cents because I’ve gotten a whole heap of very useful and inspiring information from your work towards being a commerce pilot. Thank you so much! Please keep creating - Also, love this tangential real estate/business/and more section. I’ll still mainly watch the pilot tips tricks learning lessons etc more, but I am definitely interested in your side hustles as well. You’re a very enterprising dude!

Hey Trent! I'm 27 years old and your videos have given me a lot of think about! I've been living abroad teaching English for the past 10 years. I'm moving back because I want better economic stability, but I have basically nothing. A fresh start. I don't have much experience as an entrepreneur but it's something I'm passionate about. I thought I was going to move back to become a programmer, something I've been doing in my free time for years, and eventually start a business. But now I'm wondering if i should become a pilot, something I've been dreaming of my whole life, but never as a job. Being in airline pilot isn't the most appealing to me, but there are plenty of other opportunities in aviation.

Whatever i decide to do now needs to workout, last thing i want to do is to be stuck doing a minimum wage job in debt. I don't exactly have a large savings either. I guess i have a bit of analysis paralysis. I'm wondering if i can 'make it' without going the airline pilot route, always being out of town isn't appealing.

Trent, I wateched your "too old at 53" video when you first posted it, and watched your progress before subscribing a while back. You really have me thinking about it myself, just turned 50 this year. Really appreciate all the flying info videos, and business advice would well worth the addition. Watched the Pro Pilot podcast the other day while working, your background story was really interesting to hear. I wish someone would have coached me 30 years ago about business, and what kinds require massive amounts of time and investment in machines and labor to run them, vs businesses that can run without you being there all the time. I think part of the appeal of being a pilot is the pay vs the work life balance, and busines pitfalls, advise, discussions all go hand in hand. If you happen to come across Pilots that have color deficient eyesight, and how they manage, I would be really interested in hearing about they go about it.

@SailorGerry Thank you. Watched that video a week or 2 ago, just went through the comments and found your comment. I've watched a few videos on the control towel light guns, and can see the VARS lights. Runway lights in videos I've watched I feel I can tell between green, yellow and white pretty well. Looking at a G1000 display or paper map, sometimes the specific category of color of lines that are thin or faint are harder to classify, but can distinguish most of the colors pretty well I think. Sometimes I wonder if I just didn't learn my colors very well, and the Ishihara is just a conspiracy lol Thanks for the reply, I'll look into it!

In many ways you’ve already reached “critical mass” and that comes in different forms. Your aviation journey will be equally as successful as previous ventures I’m guessing. This was a fantastic video and would encourage you to make more similar to this. Lots of great information and takeaways. Thanks for sharing your story.

Almost started working on my ratings to be a professional pilot in 2018 but decided to take over the roofing business and bought out a good friends residential roofing business.. one year later Covid hit and I ran out of money to keep it going so paid off suppliers and have been working on a pilot career path along with insurance adjusting.. almost too 900 hours hope to have a flying job before the year is over!

I agree that a product based business is where the leverage is. I started a software company 25 years ago and with each license we sold the continuity of our cash flow grew (vendor lock) Got my PPL but too busy to fly the last 10 years. Recently sold the company. Financially independent. But I worked HARD . I can buy my own hangar and plane now and enjoy flying for the rest of my days. Unfortunately I'm already 58, so the airliners is too late for me. (And maybe for the best. I LOVE flying, but I'm not sure if all the traveling/irregular hours would still be worth it for me) Anyway, I'm not complaining and all set for my next chapter. Besides cruising around, I might go for CFI to add some purpose. Always liked teaching. Wish you all the best on your aviation journey, Trent!

great video. It's like a combination of a flying channel and alex hormozis channel. I agree that you definitely have to think about the opportunity cost of forgone salary when leaving your job to pursue something else (especially the health ins/self-employed taxes/etc). But you also have to think about the emotional repercussions of never having tried something different. Maybe you would have gotten bored/plateaud with your old job and grew to hate it. That's what happened to me. I'm currently in a career transition. Experimenting with a few things right now. Aviation is one of them. Thanks for the great video!

Wanted to fly my whole life, started taking lessons at 27, I’m 30 now. My wife and I ran a small trucking business, in 2022 I decided to sell the trucking business and pursue real estate. I’ve cashed commission checks but rarely done more than paid the bills. So I decided to go to the railroad and work as a conductor, 7 months in I got indefinitely laid off with the slow economy. Now I’m back to where I was 3 years ago, I WANNA FLY!! I’m married with 3 kids, we have successfully become 90% debt free just 2 car payments on one note. After reading all of this, my question is financing the best route to go now? I know I’ll pay a higher interest rate etc. I want as quick a turn around as possible on my training. I don’t really have a job that can afford me to pay as I go due to the inconsistent income, funding is the only thing holding me up at this juncture. Thanks!
@trent_dyrsmid
@trent_dyrsmid 4 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear about the last three years. That’s sucks. Now the future…. Yes, high rates suck….but if you look at your lifetime earnings, who cares? It’s a drop in the (tax deductible) bucket. You have DECADES of earning in front of you and the quality of life (if you live in base and don’t have to commute) will be amazing. Is it guaranteed that you’ll get hired right at 1500 hours by a part 121 or part 135? No. But what in life is guaranteed? If you do the work, AND you have the aptitude, AND you network with other at every chance you get, you are surely stacking the cards in your favor. For example, I have made friends with one of the guys on the ramp at the local FBO. He then introduced me to a good buddy of his who is a captain at the largest part 135 at my airport. That guy and I are both dirt bikers and are now becoming friends. While working for their part 135 is not my plan A, I’m quite sure that at some point in the future, it would be a lot easier to get hired there if I’m good buddies with a guy that works there. If you want to fly, make it happen.
@Peterbilttrucker

@@trent_dyrsmid I appreciate that insight, that’s a great way of looking at it. I’ve always had the mentality that I was all or nothing, especially when I was running my trucking business but I don’t feel like I’ve ever really implemented it yet. Ive never wanted to go down in flames, let alone adding fuel to the fire with debt and interest, now seems a good a time as ever to finally live up to that mindset. Thanks for taking the time to pass along that perspective, keep up the great work on the channel. Myself and many other appreciate your time and dedication.
