honestly i had to keep telling myself that them yelling at me is not a reflection of me but a reflection of them projecting their insecurities and stress onto me. and yes it is so hard to call them out because of the power dynamic and the fact that they control my compensation. it's really hard to give feedback in that sense. i have t r i e d :(

@@chloeshih Truly it is. Being a great leader requires a lot of emotional intelligence which, like any skill, requires time and consistent effort to build. A lot of managers have not and will not put in that work. Unfortunately (as you've experienced) the employees suffer the most because of this skill deficit. It sounds like you're amazing at your job, but no matter how poor an employee is performing there's never a reason for authorities to use shame to address that. I hold a lot of privilege relative to most in the industry so I've been able to more easily confront management on these issues. I've made some progress with certain managers and IC's. I don't think it's hopeless but it will require a lot more privileged people putting in the work and not tolerating this kind of behavior to get the big changes that are needed.

I had a recent experience of being asked to leave the team when I shared my own aspirations to transfer from implementation to BD role in a tech company. I felt really hurt as I got ghosted by the team leaders after that. While recovering from this, seeing your sharing let’s me know that I am not alone and it is okay to move on; knowing that someday I will be better elsewhere.

Woman in tech here too: I'd love to get more of your thoughts on reacting in the moment when a coworker says something that's out of line (eg the "Allies" question), and ways to circle back if you have no allies in the room to make sure it doesn't happen again. Like you, I've unfortunately also had some truly awful things said to me in professional environments, and also been too shocked in the moment to respond eloquently. Really loved this video overall: thanks for being so candid.

Thank you for being so brave and sharing. It gives courage to others to know they aren’t crazy and are empowered to make difficult decisions (like leaving a toxic environment). It’s so frustrating and exhausting to have to continuously protect against the onslaught of credit-stealers, mansplainers, and weak leadership. Persevere my friend and one day we’ll be at the top, enforcing a healthier work environment. Until then, we can do small things to support one another along the way (like drawing attention back to people who were interrupted, highlighting the ideas of others especially making sure credit is shared where due, etc).

When I had the courage to speak up then I was judged by the other team just because I was not in the best form for a moment of my life. It’s was really worst experience but also push me to move on. So grateful that you share this. As an Asian woman who used to work in investment banking, it was brutal. I'm in sustainability now and I still experience discrimination and talking down to from other women. It's such a struggle because as an Asian woman, I come off soft spoken and it can be hard when the corporate culture favours alpha type behaviours.

Those ally examples were really good! Even that awkward 10-second silence because it could have been easy for someone to just giggle and take it as a joke but the person speaking probably knew they messed up when no one responded. Major props to the person who called it out! And the second example was such an ideal way for the person to handle it. Waiting for the person to finish so they weren't rude either but bringing you back in.

So sorry about all of these painful experiences but I guve you so much credit for being vulnerable about them..a good manager should always want their highest performing employees to progress. They shouldnt be burning their bridges either. When the manager wants to keep you, it puts you in a catch 22 in terms of performance: keep performing well, you'll burn yourself out and you wont get promoted, or do the minimum or less and bad things will happen.

I'm a women in tech, relatively early in my career still (2-3 years including internships) and glad to say that I haven't experienced this kind of discrimination yet. I am so so glad that you have come out on the other side with so much strength and wisdom... but still sad for you that you had to go through that BS!! aww thank you leona! i feel like i'm still recovering from a lot of the trauma from the past x_x i honestly think i could've avoided a lot of those challenges had i known how to draw boundaries and call people out in the moment when they're power tripping. it's not a skill i really learned as an asian woman. i do have this weird relationship with superior figures in my life where i literally say yes every time they ask me to do something and i don't often question their directives. sighhh big lessons learned!

Looking back at the time management made me cry (didn’t stop crying for an hour) when I was a young employee, I see now due to being a person of colour I’m not inclined to pushback or question authority. Fear of loss of pay check is real factor in remaining silent. Also did not have the knowledge of what is ok and not ok behaviour from management, and what language I could use to assertively establish my boundaries or defense etc. this was before all the free or low cost online webinars were available for self or leadership development. My tip is to read up and have arsenal of tools you can use.

Damn, there was probably a lot of toxic leadership! I used to work in a fast food gig, and my manager was super nasty and despicable. She was a perfectionist, and kind of a hypocrite, my coworkers and I did not liked her. Toxic positivity played a role too, however I couldn’t stand being “fake happy,” so I left.

The more talented people like you speak up about their experiences, the more empowered us plebs will feel to not accept the status quo of discrimination (and a lot of times, abuse)! I have been underpaid and over-worked for the majority for my career because I simply didn't know any better, I just wanted to please everyone and get them to like me. Every role I have left has had to be backfilled with 2-3 people and only now do I realize how stupid and naive I was :(

11:27 actually made me tear up. My first job as a software dev I was working at a startup where I felt psychologically unsafe. I finally broke down during a 1:1 with my manager and he was more supportive than I could've imagined. I'm so grateful to him and I hope to be that person for someone else one day. Not In tech, but as someone who was moved into management role without being provided any training (I was a lone wolf), I’ve finally invested my own money & my own time after work in developing my skills to ensure my interactions leave the team positive. WhaT I mean is Don’t assume a manager has had training or any skills in people management or emotional intelligence. Also, keep in mind they may be on the Autism spectrum so may miss some cues.

I really appreciate the encouragement! :) And for some reason, KZbin doesn’t allow me to link anything in the comment section, but you can try to figure out your MBTI type if you google 16personalities or Mistypeinvestigator. I find that 16personalities makes more errors, but it is quick to do. It’s also a nice basic introduction to the 16 types. Mistypeinvestigator is significantly longer, but it’s more accurate when you take your time and be thorough with your answers. When you finish, it’ll give you a break down on which type you most likely are. I like this one a lot! :D

Y I K E S ! I have a question and please forgive me if I frame it awkwardly. How much of Tech's incredibly variable manager skills, do you think come from how people skills are ranked second to engineering skills? I am a grown man and I have had managers do similar 'bully-ing' type things I guess trying to bank on the power from their position to make up the deficit of managerial skill? What do you think about that Chloe?

it was really the way other people treated people in my role as well as how we were paid. :( from what i've seen in tech, these roles don't get that much ownership, visibility, and pay. now that i'm in a new career path, i always try to give everyone the respect they deserve. every job is challenging and useful in their own ways!

My entire career as a PM has kinda turned on its head in the last year. Only because my experience as a woman in tech has been compounded by becoming a working mom in tech. Talk about some serious imposter syndrome. Being the only female PM on the team and being a new mom…it’s been a really difficult transition.

@@chloeshih Thankfully I have a really great boss (who has children). He is very understanding but he also is a he...so it's definitely difficult to explain to him how come I worry so much about how I am perceived by others now that I'm a Mom because he doesn't deal with what women in our positions tend to deal with. I'm not gonna lie, Chloe, it's really hard BUT you'll do what you have to do when that time comes and you will forge your path and you will thrive. Sounds like you have good managerial support now and that is truthfully half the battle when it comes to periods of professional and personal transition. Thanks for what you do here!

I honestly wish I had the courage to do that. I was so young and naive. I didn’t know it was bad management and just took it all and almost blamed myself for not being capable of handling it. :( now I know better!
