These days people just confuse melancholy with depression. You don't cry in depression. Depression is when you lose all emotions. Everything is grey and dark. No happiness and no sadness. This is difficult to understand for someone who has never been clinically depressed. But you feel absolutely nothing. Just void and empty. All day, everyday. I was an extreme case a few years back. I remember cutting my palm with a blade, and putting chili powder on it just to feel something, it was so bad. So no, what this woman went through is not depression. It's just intensified sadness. Good that you came out of it though. Always remember, when you laugh you are good. When you cry you are good. When both stop happening, run to the clinic.

Every person who goes through depression feels it in different ways. Not for everyone all the days are dark and gloomy. There are people in depression who cries too much than normal . Also there are people who bottles their emotions . There are people who sleeps too much and then there are some who suffers from insomnia. Some people gains weight in depression and some loses weight . I think majority of the people bottle up their emotion that's why it has become a common assumption. But trust me crying in melancholy and crying in depression are two completely different things . That silent cry for help is as much painful as being numb . So stop dismissing something just because you think that's not how it should be.

@@chaoticsilence2148 You didn't get it did you. That's why I said it's hard to understand. You say some sleep more and some have insomnia. Why is it called insomnia? Why does it have a different name? It's because insomnia is a different disorder than depression. Sleeping too much, not sleeping at all, eating too much, not eating at all are all different disorders. They may accompany depression as a means to cope with the apathy. Every person doesn't go through depression in their "own" way. It's a disorder not fashion. There are specific symptoms. There are a set of tests, that if you score high on, you are then considered clinically depressed. Otherwise the doctor sends you home saying you are just stressed. The primary symptom of depression is lack of emotions. Crying is an emotion. If you cry you aren't depressed just sad. I'm talking about clinical depression not borderline. The best way to describe depression is being dead inside. People gain weight or lose it even without being depressed. Thyroid for instance makes you obese. Or lose weight. Eating too much or too little is again a coping mechanism not a symptom. If you go to a doctor and say I feel depressed and I am eating more than normal and gaining weight. The doc won't diagnose you as depressed. However if you go to a doctor and say "doc I don't feel anything at all. I'm dead inside". Your doc then will prescribe you anti depressants. "Crying in melancholy and crying in depression are two different things" again you can't cry while depressed. It's like saying I'm gonna stand up while I sit It doesn't make any sense. I was depressed for 14 years. I just don't want people to suffer unnecessarily. I'm not here to prove you wrong or strike down peoples opinions. But to alert all of you that there's a thin line between being sad and getting depressed. I'm just saying don't go that route. You don't WANT to be depressed trust me. Shake those feelings of sadness, cry it out if you want but get out of that phase. If you keep pondering over those feelings and start curling up. You will just push yourself in the nightmare called Depression.
