The Brutus coins are a kind of roman coins with a very special historical significance. In 2020 one such golden coin was sold on auction for a staggering amount. This is the story of those coins, their meaning and what they can teach us about roman history.
This is the second episode for this channel. Please have patience with us - the learning curve is still quite steep. For this episode we have invested in new microphones and improved the sound for the narration.
Ancient History makes illustrated stories about the history of the ancient world - from the beginning of civilization to the fall of western Rome. (However I don’t guarantee that I won’t do some excursions to the Byzantines.) If you enjoyed this video and would consider helping me to improve my productions further, please join me at Patreon: / ancient_history
Please note: The episodes might contain names of living experts and scientist. Most persons named however, have lived sometime during the past.

Yes, this era is immensely interesting once you start to dig your self into it! It is of course fortunate that for this period ther a so many rich sources avaliable.

Second the motion. After reading and studying copious text on history as hagiography, biography, factual text, morality lessons etc etc (Gibbons et al) it is doubly refreshing to hear and see minutiae behind history.... it gives flesh to dry facts and provide contextual insights .... more details like this in small servings would be eagerly awaited....

The beards were usually grown to symbolize mourning. I wonder who they were mourning for in those coins? Possibly for Caesar himself. Romans were odd like that. Also could have been commemorating those who died in civil war..

It is of course impossible to know today - but I think I touch the notion that it could relate to the death of the republic.

Hi Marten, can you explain the “Imp”? Was he hypocritically making a bid to be emperor or did it have a solid Republican connotation prior to Augustus?

Hi Jack. Great question! Traditionally, in republican times, it was a title that the troops bestowed on their commader if he had been outstandingly victorious. It was also a necessary "title" to gain to be allowed to request a triumph at the senate in Rome. If it was granted, after the triumph - the commander no longer had the right to use the title.
