Thanks again for a stellar education, Joe! Glad to hear that two great minds such as yourself and Ethan come together quite frequently for whatever creative endeavors.

Super cool concept! Ethan seems like he might have a way to make a more precise mask for behind the grid of pin holes. 3D printing gets iffy at smaller scales some times but maybe laser cutting would work! It would be cool to see how a circle or other shaped mask would effect the final image. It might end up with more of a “pop art” effect.

@@TheHomemadeCameraPodcast Yes, Ethan and I do some mad-scientist dabbling in using this design principle for a variation on the pixellator camera.

Heh, we might be the only two people still logging into f295 still. Really miss it 😥

I didn’t realize f-295 was still around. I’ll try to sign in, but it’s been about 10 years since I last signed in so we will see.

I love to type at night,but... Not conducive to sleep. At night I'm looking to quiet my thoughts preparing for rest. So I use mornings early afternoons in general. But would prefer to type at night,..if sleep wasn't necessary. Great video, going to try this as now my curiosity is sparked by your video.

Thanks Joe. Really neat idea from Igor. I'm trying to get my head around whether this makes a significantly shorter effective focal length compared to a single pinhole. Also, random idea, I wonder if you could use the iris from a lens as the plate? It would give round images but ones that could be varied in size very easily. Perhaps spirally (or randomly) arranged pinholes. Another project I must not start!

I think it gives a wider angle of view for the same focal ratio of a single-pinhole camera with the same pinhole-to-film dimension. This will be evident when I present a video next week, using this same principle to make a variation on the pixellator camera. An adjustable iris would be easy to implement. I'm also going to a try a hexagonal tessellation of pinholes, using a hexagonal inner window. Also, I didn't really get into the details of figuring out the layout of the pinholes and dimensions. Basically, if you define the film size, pinhole-to-film distance and the width of the pinhole array, then there's only one size and location of the inner window that satisfies the design conditions. I calculate the layout of the pinholes based on the centers of each image area at the film plane, then scale that layout down proportional to the ratio of film-to-inner window : inner-window-to-pinhole dimensions. My test camera is limited to a particular pinhole-to-inner window and pinhole-to-film plane dimensions. The size of the pinhole array kind of determines the overall size of the image array at the film plane (for a particular focal length), while the width of the inner window determines the border of each image area. Maybe I'll do another video specifically on figuring out these dimensions.

I didn’t realize I could still sign in to f-295. I will give it a try.

For me it was not possible.

Interesting... I never thought of using parallax to make a wide image without resorting to a curved film plane... Optimal window size should be easy to calculate either by graphing it on paper or using a graphics program. Also, having a frame that has a gradient towards the edges could make the transition softer.

could something along these lines be used to decrease the exposure time for low speed paper? each section of paper has its own pinhole where light can come through rather than the light being shared from one pinhole? i cant quite wrap my head around whether it would work but maybe its a possibility?

Why stop at nine pin holes? Why not do 18, or 27! You could have a pixelated image!

Yes, any number are possible. Next week I'll present a pixellated camera using this principle.
