Bryan Saint fools Penn & Teller a second time with a green folder and a Rubik’s cube! Penn & Teller: Fool Us
Returning to Penn & Teller: Fool Us (S10, E6), Charlotte NC based magician Bryan Saint takes a green folder and a Rubik’s cube and shows a trick that can only be done on TV. He then becomes one of the few magicians in 10 seasons to fool Penn & Teller more than once. In Penn’s own words, “We just cannot figure out how you did it!”
Bryan originally fooled Penn & Teller with take on a classic rope routine using a phone charger. You can see that video here:

@@gvngki There are absolutely ways you can make slow, seemingly random moves, that just translate to one quick solution, but for those permutations I'd still think you need both hands. Not to mention that a cube that can be solved quickly, is often fairly clicky and loud. So the solution is probably just a self-solving cube, probably programmed beforehand and at the end he switches the trick for a real cube. Which does make it a little lame.

It was interesting that the first time he just put the unsolved real cube behind the folder and then grabbed the shell with 5 sides, so it's pretty obvious how he did it. But that was just misdirection. He then started solving the real cube with one hand behind the folder over and over. Then he shows the 3 cubes at the same time and then the green cube later. So we are really confused at this point. So now we're thinking OK there are 4 cubes and then at the end there is only 1 cube. The only thing that is kind of suspicious if you really looked was at the end, the table and the folder start vibrating caused by him collapsing the shells of the cubes flat but you really can't see anything when he removes the folder because I imagine both the table and the flattened cubes are all a really dark black which is hard for the human eye to differentiate.

Here is my current theory regarding the trick. Bryan has a real cube, and two faux-cubes. One of the faux-cubes is a fake solved cube, at 3:21 he places the "solved cube" behind the folder, and at 3:31 he places the real cube behind the folder, solves it quickly with one hand, and pulls it out again. He does this again and again until he pulls out the "solved cube" again at 4:35. He then places it back and it is never seen again. At 4:45 Bryan pulls out the second faux-cube alongside the real cube and the first faux-cube, making sure to only show three of it's faces, the red, white, and blue faces. I believe this is because the other three faces are those of the "green cube". When he pulls out the "green cube" at 5:12, the top face is not actually visible, and a second later he places that face on his palm, once again only allowing three faces to be seen. The most important part is that he never manipulates the faces of this faux-cubes, so they can be made compressible. Being compressible, they can both be slipped into the sleeve of the folder or some other location, cleanly disposing of them. But the real question isn't how he did it in theory, but how he did it in practice without it being instantly obvious. This would indeed logically explain the trick, but the explanation fails to account for the seemingly impossible skill with which it was done. I believe this is the mystery Penn and Teller could not solve, and thus why they admitted defeat. Even I must admit defeat, because after spending 20 minutes reviewing the trick over and over, going through specific points frame by frame, I still cannot figure out when and where he disposed of the false cubes.

impressive trick, very impressive "sleight of cube", every cube he held has the same pattern though, he disguises it by using the different colors but look for a face with a 2x2 of 1 color, on top is a 2x1 of another color, next to it another 2x1 and in the corner a single color with some practice this would make the cube in an easy state for a 1 hand solve since it only needs 2 rotations

As someone who can actually solve a cube in less than a minute. The quick 1 handed solve is a easy thing most people don't understand. but where did the other cubes go? The rest of the motions are him solving and scrabbling the same physicals cube.
@jellygoo

Would also be my guess. It all goes from the moment he showed the 3 cubes at the same time (+ the green one). He makes 3 hand movements (for the 3 fakes) that seem to go deeper to the level of the table to stash them away. Which is also why he always made sure to make very obvious bumps and switches before, just slightly different.

He told you the truth throughout the whole performance: he never once switched cubes. The nice part of the trick (other than the effortless quick solve) is where props went. My guess is the table, as thin as it is, has an open slit at the back.

I think he actually just has one solved cube. the black table looks quite thin, but could hide a small compartment in the back (black compartments are common in magic) and other half paper/folded cubes that he can easily show. The solved cube is real and he really takes it out at times to move it a few times that he can easily back track with one hand to resolve when needed to inspire confidence. And even if that's right, the trick and presentation is amazing. He definitely deserved the trophy.

Great trick, and I agree with P&T that you have phenomenal patter. Brooke even comments: "you had me on the hook the entire time". Funny enough, even though it seemed like there were a couple stumbles in the patter, you certainly had me on the hook the entire time too. Your previous Fool Us performance had flawless patter too -- you are just very, very likable and easy to listen to. I loved that you acknowledged exactly what someone would be thinking as you went along with the trick -- almost like playing along with the audience/P&T while doing the trick. That's a great style. As for how it was done... Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. At one point, there were 3 cubes visible simultaneously, and at least a fourth cube with different sticker types from those 3. At the end, there was only one. As far as I can tell, that only leaves two possibilities: a hidden compartment and a lot of cubes, or not a hidden compartment and a lot of cubes, and I don't think there was a hidden compartment. I'll leave it at that, but that's my guess anyway, and I kinda agree with P&T that you seem to arrive there logically after thinking about it, but it doesnt feel very satisfying. I loved the performance though!

I'm not surprised they liked the patter as it deconstructed (in part) the trick, which they themselves love to do. I have no idea how the trick itself was done, though I observed a lot of careful placement and positioning going on behind the screen, which I assume was necessary. Actually, thinking about it, I think I figured out the secret: the entire studio audience was added in post.

I saw what happens the first time through!!!! There is only one cube... but it's not a regular cube. You can see as he scrambles the cube he needs to hold in a way that it doesn't automatically spring back into positions. The little cubes are held by elastics that "unwinds" the cube as he sets it down. You can see a couple times when he's scrambling the cube it tries to snap back and he has to hold it a certain way so it stays mixed.

I thought the cubes were gimmicked, where 3 sides are solved and the other 3 sides are mingled, and you have a formula that with a few twists can mess up the solved sides and simultaneously solves the three other sides. And then depending how you show this gimmicked cube to the audience, it can look solved or it can look mingled. But on a second watch of your performace I saw you showed all sides of the cube, so my idea doesn't hold up , so you fooled me!

So well done. So he straight-out says he's not switching cubes, but when he talks about the cube being a standard cube, he prefaces it with "if" so yeah, two must be fake and the main one must somehow be able to be commanded to switch its faces quickly. So I think it's an engineering effort which shouldn't be too hard since there is a lot of space inside those cubes if you can manage what happens when twisting parts of it. I'm just wondering whether he triggers it manually or remotely.

Theory: 1. A motorized self-solving cube, they're a thing and this guy is big on fancy props 2. The extra cubes shown off are collapsible 3. The final cube has a 'door' on the orange side, and he inserts the collapsed cubes, and the functional cube on the final 'solve'. It's slightly bigger than a normal cube 4. At 6:38, he does a very smooth move to ensure the 'door' side of the final cube is down on the table, so it doesn't reveal anything once finished This is the only explanation I can come up with for that move at 6:38, which looks very practiced and intentional. But, it could just be that he's sending the collapsed cubes up his sleeve somehow and that rotation is unnecessary ... but the mechanism for that would be hard to hide while he's doing the rest of the trick, and in a magic trick, dismissing a move as accidental or unnecessary is usually a bad idea Overall there's enough weird stuff going on, like the green cube where he very carefully shows only three sides (and doesn't really add to the act, which seems suspiciously like it's some misdirection for him to do something), or the color 'change' at 5:07, that I'm not really convinced he's speed solving them, but that's only half the trick, anyway
