Mandrake linux installer included the ability to resize windows partitions. At the time, most other linux distros required that you already resized your partitions to make free space or just overwrite everything. This was at the time where there weren't a lot of free partition tools supporting windows partitions and most people used partition magic. Having a resizer in the installer was huge.

If I remember correctly you could use parted or fdisk on a tty for others but probably not as user friendly. Ubuntu probably had gparted or you could use the gparted live cd but that might have been later. ntfs-3g for windows partitions of course and it was always a bit risky back then, with most things mounting ntfs read only.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that DEI is used to make projects grind to a halt. Instead of taking care of the project, people take care of other people, remove them from the project and create an atmosphere of fear where others aren't daring to speakup. This also prevents a lot of people from thinking freely and finding creative solutions to the problems in front of them. Overall this let's projects slow down heavily and in the end grind to a halt, which basically destroys the project. People need to rise up and remove those from power that play these games, so that the open source community can heal and projects can be put back on track again.

OpenMandriva is an old OS that woke people didn't see as important enough to take over. The super intelligent people who are getting purged are being scattered into the winds, because the woke took over all the communication hubs first, to ensure that people who get purged have as difficult of a time as possible finding a place to congregate. Somebody needs to get a complete list of everyone who got purged, and start reaching out to them, to try and bring them all together. Otherwise, most of them will disappear into obscurity.

Mandriva is the merge between Mandrake and Conectiva, which was a great Brazilian distro based on Red Hat. In the early 2000s they did great things, like a real x11 gui for the installation. I used it a lot and was my entry into the linux world. I am really glad to see it is still alive and I am downloading it right now!

I'm going to check out OpenMandrive on Distrowatch ;-) and then install it in a VM to try it out again. I always loved it. The main reason I switched to Arch was so I'd get updated versions of software. Plus the AUR. I love the AUR.

I switched from OpenSUSE to Fedora after seeing news about everyone being kicked out. I knew Fedora had DEI investments as well, but Fedora seemed kinda the safest option, since all the other smaller distros keep dying off eventually. I tried Artix, which I have used on my old hardware, but now it just gives me constant issues. I'm thinking of trying OpenMandriva, but I have to dedicate some time for it, and setting it up all over again.

OpenMandriva It was based on ROSA, a Russian Linux distribution project which forked Mandriva Linux in 2012

While not entirely wrong, that's not entirely true either. What exactly happened is this: Mandriva the company went out of business. ROSA forked the code left over. Later on, OpenMandriva got started and we decided to start from the code base ROSA had continued maintaining instead of the last (by then pretty outdated) Mandriva codebase. OpenMandriva is not "based on" anything in the way Ubuntu is based on Debian or CentOS is based on Red Hat. We simply used ROSA as a starting point (and yes, we talk to them and we sometimes share patches, but outside of that, there's no dependencies between the projects).

Systemd or runit, or something else? Is software available for it, or am I compiling everything outside of the top 1% most popular software? Plasma, gnome, something custom? If they have strong ethical or political beliefs that shape how they build the distro, why not say so anywhere? Literally anything other than "this is a distro, DL it if you want"

Great review. I work in an engineering company where GNU Radio is used extensively so I attempted to get it up and running in Rock. It isn't packaged so I attempted a source build and immediately ran into dependency issues with qt5. I'd love to give Rock a chance but this is a bit of a show stopper for me. I think it does raise a conversation about why certain projects and packages are better supported by different distros.

I don’t need software developers to share my political views, I just want the software they make to be neutral. From what I understood was that Gabe Newell was a libertarian who refused to censor the steam forums. Even if he did donate to democrats, the way he’s doing things is definitely in line with what I would consider neutral.

Additionally, Libertarian is on the right, not left, however lots of center leaning liberals that don't want to associate with cringe fringe wokies will mislabel themselves as "Libertarian". Any actual Libertarian would never ever vote or donate to anyone on the left, as the left is inherently authoritarian. Gabe is a liberal, not a libertarian.

@@robotron1236 Still keep your ear to the tracks --- no matter the party affiliation, the "destructive corruption" occurs in everything. The difference is the "rate." Arch isn't bad, and it is the best linux/gnu user land documentation, but keep a "check and balance" on them. Even arch can get incorrect data/info from time to time and be persuaded or influenced to join the "high rate corruption" side. Its all about "Checks and Balances."

I use Slackware and I have never heard anything political from Patrick Volkerding. Even Google AI says Slackware is not considered Woke. Bernard is right about not being supported by the Community, Slack is only known by those that use and contribute to the FIRST and BEST Linux Flavor around bar none.

I put Open Mandriva ROME on an old T440s Thinkpad. It runs fantastic and snappy and is beautiful. The package management is easy in the GUI or command line. And the cherry on top is there's no ideology getting between the developers and making good software.

If you get it from source forge on the right there is a info button or something which contains the numbers. Not really the most user friendly, but once you know you know.

I've never tried this distro now I have to learn it. After seeing the BS going on with elementary OS and others I didn't even want to be associated with the so-called Linux community but this gives me hope.
