This race is a tough one, for sure. It is still my favorite 100-miler to date, even though it was the most brutal race that I have ever done. I always tell people that no one remembers the easy races. It's the tough ones that make us work harder and learn more about ourselves. I cried like a baby when I crossed this finish line.

Way to cross that line! I’m doing it again this year as a redemption run. They’re going to have to haul me off the mountain this year!

@@trainspartan4464 you’ve got this! At least you’re going into it with some experience with the course. I’m heading to Antelope Canyon for the 100 in 2 weeks and I can’t wait!

There’s nothing wrong like crying like a baby. This is a brutal race. I wept as well. First time after putting so much into it. If you’re looking for the edge of your potential, you’re going to miss the mark. But at least you’re going for it. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your story.

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! That race is cursed for me I swear, but someday I’m going to finish it! I had to DNF again this year at Bryce due to severe GI issues and dehydration.

No problem, anyone who runs ultras hits those dark and low points and a course will open you up and make the emotions raw for sure. There’s no other experience like it.

You didn't fail on that day, you won. You have a beautiful family, what would have happened to them if you had decided to keep going and then died from a heat stroke or something like that. I felt the same symptoms on a (albeit shorter) run in the Colorado Front Range: nausea, no strength left, breathing like a horse even though I was just walking. I remember I tried to rent a Boulder B-Cycle when I came down to town to avoid the homestretch, but my account had expired :-( I got home somehow, short-cutting my attempted long run. A few hours later, after lots of water and cool air, I felt great again. We can go back and try once more, learning from what happened on that day.

True, we may fail to reach a goal but so many successes can come from the effort and trying to reach for our best and test our limits. Sometimes the best call is to stop short of the goal so that we can regroup and try again.

Thanks! You know if there wasn't always the looming threat of a DNF I don't know that I'd feel as much accomplishment in finishing. Honestly that's why I got into ultra running, it has just taken some time to figure that out.

100%! I attempted again this year but got a nasty stomach bug the week leading up to the race. I tried it anyway and got 25 miles before I started getting really dehydrated (still had stomach issues) and dropped. Third time’s the charm!

@@trainspartan4464 you’ll have to wait till 2024. Vacation races isn’t doing the 100 miler in 2023. It was pretty windy this past year. Took me 2 months to stop cough from all the sand that I sucked up. You got me thinking of IMTUF now.

We could always keep on trying until you win. Succeed requires discipline that you already have... but that is a very nice place for ultra. We also got a very nice place which is dry land here in middle East. Got those uploaded.

Great effort friend but you either come home with your shield or on it……better luck next time don’t come home defeated by giving up and running away! You can always keep getting up and moving forward, your capable of so much more set unachievable goals that way you’ll always be reaching forward

100% true. I came in on the shield that day, but learned and grew so much and was able to come home with the shield and a belt buckle next race that was a Hardrock qualifier. Just gotta get back up and crush it next time. Stay hard brother 👊

The hardest line to cross is the starting one. I have 3 DNFs to my name but I work on the principal it is better to aim high and fail than aim low and constantly succeed.

It's very, very unclear to me that you made the wrong decision - erring on the side of caution with respect to your health seems really smart, especially if you have a family.

I think about that race a lot and whether it was the right call. I just wonder if I had waited until the aid station and recovered an hour of things would have been different and safe to go on. If they wouldn’t have gotten better then 100% I’d make the same decision. I just really hate not finishing what I started.

You know I wondered about that, but I lived in Colorado Springs at the time at 6,500 feet elevation so kind of dismissed it as a possibility. Maybe with the dehydration compounding things I did get some. I’ve never had anything like that before or since, thank heavens.
