All right. Pet peeve time. 1st round pick? 1st pick overall? I hear people say variations of this all the time. Often it's not important. But sometimes it is. Because Bryce was the 1st overall pick, it could be that you mean what you say, but I am left wondering whether its 1st pick overall. It is difficult to believe that no 1st rounder has done this. Mantle, Mays, Jeter, Ripken all come to mind. Mays and Mantle were FA signings. Jeter didn't win ROY. Ripken, plus Brett and Schmidt were all 2nd rounders. (Brett and Schmidt were both drafted in the 2nd round of the 1971 draft. Back to back.) So I will assume you mean what you say. However, for clarity, I wish people would keep it in mind that it sometimes matters what pick in the round it is. And in this case, because Bryce was the 1st overall pick, you should clarify you mean 1st rounder. Or not. Like I say, its a pet peeve of mine and y'all are probably saying something like, "Please shut the f..........." Astros in 5.

As an Astros fan, I'm glad to see the Phillies make it. Not because I think the Astros will have an easy time or anything. Far from it; I think it's going to be a tough series. The Phillies seem to be built specifically to succeed in the playoffs, much like the Astros. Only real difference is the Astros have better depth, especially in the bullpen. I think they'll give the Astros the best series out of the NL teams. Dodgers and Braves were too traditional. Lots of talent, but nothing too interesting. That's why they both lost. I thought the Mets or Cards would be interesting due to old history with the Astros, but clearly neither of those teams had what it takes to get to the Series, at least this year. The Padres have great power and some great starting pitching, but they're the kind of team the Astros were specifically built to face. See the Yankees series. The best think about the Phillies is that they're unpredictable. They show such power and ability in the playoffs, yet they barely squeaked into the playoffs. They can be shut down (see the second to last game of the season, versus Verlander and the Astros), or they can kill the ball with the best of them (see NLCS Game 4). Which will it be? Either way, should be fun.
