That's not true. It depends on the parent. I have the ability to locate my son and daughter through their phone but have never used it. I live in Chicago and shit happens here all the time. One of my clients has a teenage son who developed diabetes. She told me her husband prompted them to implant a sugar/insulin monitor which will alert them of when he's having spikes in sugar levels. She says he's severely overprotective and is always worried. I immediately told her about this show and this episode which she later told me hit too close to home but that she's obsessed with the show now.

As a diabetic, you can't actually implant it, it would damage the body, but you can put it in like an insulin pump. This isn't a perfect system however, in my personal experience, the glucose monitor I used got updated too much, making it completely useless because it won't read the glucose. But it still is a good piece of tech, especially if the child wants to make sure they are okay, setting up a safety net.

Cece Ruben I think maybe it’s a nostalgia thing? It’s certainly isn’t one of my favorites, but not my least either... especially when it comes to season 4. I was never a Star Trek or Star Wars guy and not much of a gamer, but there are some really great and creepy scenes, choice actors, and great costume design. Besides, it’s one of the few Black Mirror episodes that gives us a happy ending. Give it another try if you haven’t already. There are far more worse / boring episodes in this series.

To often from conversations about this episode, is how fucking horrific this tech is. The censorship is torture. It's a complete lack of autonomy. I read the character as older than she apparently was, but however old. The violence against her torturer isn't even slightly unjustified. She doesn't understand the extent, but guinenly think about how horrible it would be to have what your experience controlled, to have that somewhat freed for a bit and then reinstated. I half hoped for the mother's death. In terms of the mother she's not a total evil, but she is a monster. The relationship is never okay. The control is never okay. A death of a child is better for them as a person then some bastard deciding that they can only understand and act how they fucking decide. If you do not understand the world, and you do not understand the struggles people amongst and before you went through, then you don't understand your own actions as your life goes on. Seriously fam, fuck pretending this mother was ever justified.

There were SO MANY opportunities for Marie to just TALK with Sarah, to ask her how she is and what's going on, and she instead walked the few extra feet to her own SEPARATE room to spy on her. Had she taken the time to actually talk to Sarah like a mom, she wouldn't have ever needed consult the tablet to satisfy this overwhelming need to reaffirm for herself that she is a good mother. Sarah would've eventually told her, because their relationship would have been open and healthy.

She doesn't know how to, she's socially and emotionally stunted like her daughter. Both of them don't know how to talk to each other or interact. Her parents probably was her generic "arc angel" growing up. Always sheltering her, projecting their fears on her, probably living vicariously through her as well pressuring her to fulfill their dreams, in which she failed to do so and lost potential in their eyes somewhere along the way. That's why she fails to see herself worthy, that's why her dad views her as a disappointment, he doesn't know how to talk to her either. That's also why she is having an affair with a patient who is involved in a relationship. She doesn't "morally" know any better. She doesn't understand the consequences. She self sabotages as well..just like her daughter. Plus people learn and grow from experiences. A person has to grow in their own ways. All the warnings and talks in the world wouldn't have prevented her from finding her own way in life. Trying to repress and oppress her through fear isn't helping. Its hindering. People are going to press the red button despite the warnings and danger.

That would literally destroy me. I would either make myself blind or keep my eyes closed almost all the time or keep looking up while I write out conversations I wouldn’t want anyone watching or knowing about and texting on my phone looking away etc so that she can’t tell what I’m writing at least until I can create a code language to use and then I can look at my writing or phone and if she ever catches on look back up again away from what I’m writing or texting but the fact I would have to do that in the first place is horrible and the fact that everything is visually censored is horrible U know god forbid I blink and she doesn’t know about it the sad thing is I know if this were happening today, that my in laws would have done this to my husband. To this day they constantly bug things and I have to get rid of them, them putting cameras around recording visuals and conversations, tracking his car, tracking his phone and having to look up how to shut it off, putting things in their name even if he’s paying for it all so that they can control everything, adding their name to all his financial accounts and making sure I don’t have my name on it so they can take out money that he works hard for whenever they want even though we struggle to afford enough food and rent and gas/metro money (depending on what transportation he uses, which usually is the bus or train now bc they took his car away that he bought bc legally it’s in their name to make life difficult for him so he will “come back to them” Bc he’s married and moved out again bc at some time in our life we had to stay with them in the beginning), but yet they’ve went on four vacations in the past four months across the country and bought a condo and new expensive jewelry and everything, but they apparently still need his money when they know sometimes we struggle with food and rent and my doctor appts bc I’m chronically ill and sometimes I have to choose between not having: pain, and constant vomiting, or headaches, or chronic nerve pain, or my GI system not working right and needing another procedure (I’ve had over 30 in the past two years and I’m 23 years old), etc or not being hungry, but they want to control everything and I’ve had to in the past since he is too scared to take them off the act and they know if my name is on it I will do that, that i have to often take out everything with his extra card and put it all to cash and take it home and put it somewhere hidden in the house for my husband and I to get to if we need it and everytime they know immediately bc they have an online acct to watch everything we buy with the card and everytime they call both of screaming on why there isn’t anything in the acct again and they hate how I just want him to have some space and control in his life bc he has literally cried to me before and had panic attacks not knowing how to deal with these types and people and too scared to act on setting himself free and luckily I’m not as scared I grew up in violence and abuse and a different type of control so I’m not afraid of threats especially empty threats but even if I know I’m gonna get beat idc cuz I’mma still put up a f-cking fight I’m not a scared little girl anymore and slowky my husband is growing from being that scared little boy and I always tell him go see them, go have a family day, at least once a week especially during the warmer weather, unless it’s his work or college schedule that stops him, I tell him go have fun even if I don’t wanna go too sometimes bc I want him to have fun with his family and bond, etc, I just don’t want them controlling every part of his life, and only liking me if I help them control him but if I don’t, then I’m a terrible wife and will spread rumors about me that I’ve had to show receipts to my husband to show they aren’t true and that I was where I was or wasn’t where they say I was to prove i am not doing or saying etc any of the things they say I am, or sometimes it’s really fun when he was with me the whole day that day but they don’t know that so they will try to claim they saw me somewhere doing something or with somebody and that it was me look how terrible I am and we’re both trying not to laugh bc I don’t even gotta prove it bc we were together and not there...I’m glad this doesn’t exist bc already with today’s technology it’s a f-cking hassle dealing with all this BS of them trying to control his life, imagine with this technology what they would do...I don’t even want to imagine his life with this device in it...nope. That’s a giant nope for me and everyone I care about, and even people I don’t care about. And the same goes for his sister though I know she doesn’t life me either bc I “took her brother away” when he still sees her, but I can’t force them to hang out and they’re moving including her anyway...whatever, I’m not getting into this again, but even for her, bc I still care about her well being even if she doesn’t feel the same, I understand mentally from her point of view why and if blaming me helps that’s fine but already, even though she has a much better time with them and more freedom with them than my husband does, I still can’t imagine what it would be like for her either and I wouldn’t wife this for her either. And I still care for her. I wouldn’t wish this on someone I don’t care about. I actually wouldn’t wish this upon someone I hate. This just would screw up a lot of people’s lives, physically and mentally. There is so much wrong with it I could go in but I think I’ve said more than enough and will stop here.

There was already an entire Tumblr thread about this idea when someone shared an ad of a primitive version of Arkangel. It was an advertisement for a device that could give access to your child's entire internet history and of course children of controlling parents told them it was a bad idea. But like Marie, they didn't listen, or want to, because they wanted to assert their authority as the parent and have control, which is way different than being an actual parent. Arkangel shows this perfectly as Marie doesn't actually parent her child but rather monitors her through a screen. All the dangerous shit that her daughter went through could have been mostly prevented given that they have good communication and given that the mother taught her those things, but she didn't. She censored them, which ironically brought her more danger. It's irritating to explain this to controlling parents cause they're like Marie. They don't learn until it's too late.

Dude, she freaked out when. None of her friends knew where she was, which is why she turned on the tablet for the first time in 6 years. That's understandable to me. Her continuing to watch or get super paranoid after without telling her daughter, like, I know you weren't at your friends house, where were you? But her mother is more concerned with 'protecting' her than teaching her. She doesn't confront her daughter about the lying about where she went, taking cocaine, or being pregnant. She instead threatens her boyfriend, secretly slips her an abortion pill, etc. The mother is not concerned with teaching right from wrong. She's not attempting to raise her daughter to not be a reckless dumbass. She's simply trying to block her from all of it. It parallels the censor. As a kid, everything that stressed her out was censored. Blood, that aggressive dog, her grandpa in need of help. Because of that, she was never able to come to terms with any of it. It's not until she gets the censor removed, for example, that she is able to confront and befriend the dog. Comparatively, even though the literal censor is turned off, her mom is still figuratively censoring her life. Not letting her come to terms with safe sex and her own pregnancy, and refusing to make her acknowledge the dangers of drugs or her boyfriend's influence. Essentially, she's trying to block everything that can harm Sara from her, and as a result, Sara cannot learn and grow. So yeah, she's a dumbass, but her mother is absolutely refusing to teach her any better

The scene where she's getting into the truck not only shows that she's trying to get as far away as possible, but also to imply that she may be put into danger because of her mother. Many serial killers are truck drivers and highway killers are a very real thing. A young, pretty, blonde woman getting into a (likely male) stranger's truck really doesn't bode well according to statistics. EDIT: For those of you who still want to get your panties in a twist because I "obviously pulled this statistic out of my ass," there are sources below that claim that long-haul truck drivers are a popular occupation among serial killers. I think the worst problem with Marie’s parenting is that she sheltered Sara so much she didn’t know “normal” human responses to certain situations and was eager to get into everything she was sheltered for. She couldn’t even see her own blood! How would she be ready to not freak out when she gets her period?(ofc Marie took the filter off before that). Look at the little girl that watched Trick’s video, she thought it was disgusting and probably stayed away from that, Sara didn’t react to it. She was sheltered from violence and s*x and the first time she was exposed to it she got it from Trick’s childish enthusiasm, Marie’s lucky she didn’t took a liking to it. With the dr*gs, Trick knew they weren’t worth it (saw them as business and average) but she wanted a taste because she never was taught the danger they were. We couldn’t see it, but for her core development years she was handicapped from reacting to human emotion like sadness, sickness, anger or fear. In the end she gets into a stranger’s truck, without fear for the future, because she never knew danger.

I feel like the main problem in this episode was that Marie was trying too hard to keep Sara safe and didn't do enough to teach Sara how to survive on her own. I'm not a parent (though I'd like to be someday), so I can't say for certain what parenting really is, but from my own experiences and just general observation, parenting should be about being there when your child needs you but giving them the chance to develop into an independent person for when you can't or shouldn't be there. Marie didn't teach Sara much of anything about responsibility, handling emotions, drugs, sex or anything remotely uncomfortable or dangerous, and then got angry at other people when Sara made choices that she felt were wrong or dangerous. If Marie had actually tried to have difficult conversations with Sara, like confronting her about losing her virginity, taking drugs and the pregnancy, there was still a chance that Sara and Marie could've come to an understanding and both learned what was best. I guess long story short, I feel that it's better to raise a kid who understands why you're telling them things are wrong or dangerous rather than just hiding those things from them.

This is the only episode of BM that really shook me to my core because it hit HARD. Newsflash - you're their kid! But SOMETIMES it might be up to you to set SOME boundaries and educate your parents. Maybe go with a temporary deal. Like only share on the weekends or ... something. As a dad of a daughter who died during childbirth and a boy with special needs who has wandered off, I definitely understand the desire to protect your child to the extent of having a chip implanted. This episode almost frustrated me as much as the entire history of you(which in that the protagonist was ultimately in the right but was still very frustrating) 1. The mom, Sara, and trick were all idiots. If I were the mom when Sara came back from the lake I would have directly confronted her instead of pretending nothing happened. 2. Trick should have told Sara that her mom was still watching her through the ark angel instead of just ghosting her with no explanation. 3. Lastly, Sara should have answered the phone when her mom called her while she was at the lake. If I were her, I would constantly be worried about my mom using the ark angel

You know, as a mother of a beautiful daughter, I felt conflicted with this episode. I obviously saw that it was wrong to do such a thing, but at the same time, I understood the mother's feelings. You want to know what they are doing, you're afraid something bad might happen, you want to know where they are, etc. But then again, you know that pain and bad words and scary stuff are necessary for growing up- to an extent. So in the end, you sortof understand the mom, but you understand the daughter too, it's wrong, but you can't help to feel sympathy with the mother (for some points, of course, spying on her daughter wasn't right and tricking her with the pill instead of talking with her or whatnot was completly not OK).

I am a mother too but cannot sympathize with the mom. Sure we all want our children to be safe from everything negative but the real world does not work that way. The mother lack communication skills and instead teaching her daughter the proper way to manage life the older she get, mom believe she needed her trusty device to track her every move. Thats why many children wind up to be naive adults who don't know how to cope with life and the stress along with it.

Suffocating your children will only make them hate you. My parents used to be pretty protective of me but saw it was making my quality of life a lot worse. I’m 20 now and the most protective they are is wanting my location which is I think as far as being very protective should go for an adult child. Let them make they’re own mistakes and think about if them being able to make mistakes is more important than their happiness

I think it would have been better if Sara was like 17. First of all the actor looked at least that old, and second, while I don't agree with the constant surveillance of one's children and think it's still unacceptable in most cases, it's more understandable at age 15. That's the point. Black Mirror is supposed to make us squirm and question ethics. We are not supposed to simply sympathise with one character. They do it intentionally so that we blame the mom but also understand to some degree where she's coming from as the girl is that young. The point is always to see and understand where both sides are coming from, no matter whom we side with in the end

We did get a movie in December and the new ones will probably be longer. Charlie Brooker said in one interview that they take decent time and each is like its own movie. So the quality of these will probably be amazing. They were pushed back on their release from earlier in the year so they could be perfect.
