One cool thing about being a backpacker over the age of 40 who grew up backpacking before social media era, is that we don't have to give a fuck what people think about us or our gear. I'll carry a chair, wear pants, NOT wear hip trail runners, whatever the heck I want. After having gotten to know a lot of younger dudes in their 20s and even early 30s, who have never known a world without the social pressures and judgement of social media, who always seem super insecure about doing everything "right" as it's deemed the hip/cool/"correct" way to do it via social media influencers, I can honestly say I feel super sorry for them. It just seems so hard to be so hyper-concerned with your appearance and what other people might say about you. And the fact that "hustling" to have "sponsors" as an "influencer" in the world of outdoors/hiking/backpacking.... just boggles my mind - it really is so crass and gross. I can't even imagine what would feel like. Yep, being an old dude has it's benefits. I love my chair.

Old guys are definitely cranky...I'm probably a bit older still...haven't hiked my whole life but lovin it now. The yipping and yapping here on social media I don't believe translates at all into reality. have you noticed any of this pressure or judgyness on trail? I'm going on 10 years now and I've never seen it. I hike primarily in the Sierra Nevada's and there is EVERYTHING there...rich, poor, sophisticated, dirtbags and everyone in between...everyone acts as one big family....which that and the unbelievable scenery is the very reason i backpack. I never feel judged and always feel welcome (lot of absolutes there) and supported. Where in this day and age can you still hitchhike and enjoy it. For the record this is the only good thing about California...but you all knew that

I'm not anti-chair, but I have trained my body to be in the resting squat position. I'm in my 50s. it can take time to train this, but you can do it, too. Not only does it make it comfortable for me to sit in a sqat or on the ground, but the extra strength and flexibility in the hips are really important for all the hiking and climbing and mobility we need for backpacking. It's freedom.

Pro-chair if I am socializing. No-chair if I am solo. I can pack in the tent. HIKER HACK: Go to your friendly bike shop and ask them to give you four of the black, plastic wheel/hub/lug/QR protectors that come on a new, boxed bike. It would provide a round base for each chair leg, each approximately 3" in diameter. They throw them away all day. Then your chair legs will not sink.

Hike your own hike, of course. I tried taking a sit pad and realized I just always forgot to take it out when I would sit on rock and logs during the day. So I don’t think I would ever think to set up a chair at stops. But now that I’ve switched from tarp/tent to hammock, I always look forward to sitting and laying in my hammock, and I have occasionally set it up mid day if I’m going to take a longer break.

Tree stumps are not comfortable, and kill my back, the support I get from sitting in a chair makes it way easier to do more miles the next day. Even taking a lunch break and busting out a chair, it rests your back soo much so when u get back to hiking you feel great and not all cramped or hunched up.

Sitting outside in the chair zero has 2 problems for me, one is that you have cold air under you, and two is bugs, when you are not moving and its getting to that time when you are at camp, the mosquitos eat you up. Better to get in your shelter, have a warm pad under you, while reclining in your crazy creek imo. Even if you are with friends outside, you can use the crazy creek.

I take my CZ with me on all my day hikes and I always use it when I take a break. I also have a Trekology chair that I keep in the car. The chair does have some cons: price, weight, bulk. You need a pretty level surface but you can put some rocks under the feet to level it. It can sink in soft ground. I bought the "Chair Buddies", little support booties for the chair legs that you just snap in place. Well, that's more cost, weight, and bulk but worth it to me. The chair is so light, that it can get blown away so you have to put something on it. As far as pros: Comfort. Mobility also, you can put the chair where you want like facing the sunrise/sunset. Can't do that with a log. Keeps you off cold, wet, hard ground. So for a thru/section hike probably not. For a day or multiday hike, oh yes. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

You know the lids of Ruffles potato chip tubes? Keep a couple in your pack to stick under the soft spot under the chair foot - i keep a few inside the Helinox Zero stuff sack - they don't even register on my scale so I don't know what they weigh. Wow 171 comments in less than 24 hours! Goes to show how opinionated this topic is! But Great video! Very balanced. I actually like the fact that the legs sink into the ground. Anytime I use the chair on uneven ground I can sink the legs to still find a comfortable position. Never had my cross bar snap. I’ll send you one of my Take a Seat shirts if you will wear it in a video? 😉

I always take my chair. And it’s 2 lbs! it has bigger feet on it so it doesn’t sink in to soft ground. My husband takes the stansport stool and I know it’s not comfortable lol. But pretty sure it doesn’t weight much less if at all than the helinox

All great points and I do more moto camping than hiking but I am working on changing that this year. It's easy to pack a small chair in my pannier and I would miss it so much when I got to camp if I didn't have it. Here is a questions maybe you can help me with. The chair I currently have is the same style as yours, but it's basically a store brand (MEC same as REI) and it is much heavier and I have been using it for years but I get it is not a good one to take hiking and it is ready to be replaced anyway. The issue for me is those Helinox chairs like the zero are crazy expensive. Can you suggest an alternative to it that even if it was 2 pounds I don't need to use my line of credit to buy it? The most I see me hiking as I get more into this is 4-5 hrs in a day for 1-3 days so no big thru hikes for me in the near future. You did nail the one thing I hate about the chair and that it sinks into most ground surfaces and I wish they made something that goes on the feet like the snow attachment for the bottom of my hiking poles. Love your channel and laid back approach.

Found out in iceland you dont need one , you are only allowed to camp on offocial campspots which always have benches etc. In Norway and Sweden its the "Allmansrätten" - Right of Everyone - which allowes you to Camp anywhere you want just need 100m distance to next house . There i take a Chair since i Camp in the middle of nowhere and dont want to sit in Wet Grass . 1lb chair Zero is Not much . Also i left UL and for example Switched my Neoair Uberlite out for 3x the Weight Sea to Summit Etherlight . I want to go Light , Not ultralight
