I’m not sure if my other comment will post because I tried to share a link so I’ll repeat the text of it here. I’ve never had the BeFree love affair that others seem to have. I use the Sawyer Squeeze and the Platypus QuickDraw. The added benefit of Sawyer is their philanthropy. And, yes, the Squeeze lacks a cover for the dirty end but I was able to make one. Take a big plastic pop bottle (2 litre size here in Canada) and cut off the neck just above where it widens to the shoulders of the bottle. Now force the bottle’s cap onto the cut end of the neck. The threaded end of the neck can then be screwed perfectly into the dirty end of the Squeeze. I tried to share a link to photos in my other comment but not sure if it will post.

I've never been a fan of the small pots. Bigger pots lets you heat up enough water to rehydrate your meal and have a hot beverage at the same time. It's also there if your other water treatment failed. I do have more cook sets than I need, but I don't see the Stanley as being so deficient to require upgrading. Plus the Stanley can sit in a fire whereas the non-stick in the MSR will cook off at higher temps. I also treat my stoves with the same respect I give a knife. Do that, and the traumatic alcohol stove incidents go away. Occasionally, I might have to say "Dude, watch out for my stove. Can't you see I'm cooking?", but most people will understand that stepping on someone else's dinner isn't something they should be doing. I've used all sorts of spoons and sporks ranging from folding titanium to Wendy's plastic to bamboo. A few years ago, it occurred to me that the 95 cent stainless steel table spoon at Walmart has a long handle, is durable and will have people mock you around dinner time. If the difference in weight between a stainless spoon and a titanium spoon is an issue, you might want to see a physical therapist. I carry hydration bags when I need more water capacity, not to replace a water bottle. If you want to mix something in that will goo up your hydration bag, just mix it in your water bottle. A little known feature about water is that it can be transferred from one container to another. I did discover another way to retain electrolytes. I buy salt that has sodium, potassium and magnesium in it. Five bucks worth of Real Salt is enough to replace about one hundred bucks worth of electrolyte mix, plus you can use it on your food.

I worry about the stability of both the stove and the pot on top of it, but it'd be nice to make coffee in the woods and keep the whole peace and quiet thing going on. As far as the BeFree goes, if you haven't used it for a while, just put some water in it and let it soak for about half an hour or so before you try to filter anything and it works just fine. That said, I've heard that Sawyer is doing a lot for helping third world countries get clean water so they are great to support as well.

The isobutane fuel is far superior to alcohol at higher elevations, as well as lower temperatures. I haven't confirmed this, so take it with a grain of salt, literally lol I've heard it said from personal trainers and some others that electrolyte mixes, such as Gatorade, don't replace what you lost in sweat, for if it did your drink would be so salty it's unpalatable. So here's what they recommend, and what I recommend as well after doing it a few times and seeing great results. Take half a teaspoon, about 1000mg of salt, and drink it down with a few swigs of water. Do that once or a few times. It works wonders and actually replaces your electrolytes. Plus there's no sugar, no artificial cancer causing sweeteners, no food dyes, etc. etc. etc. Just pure electrolytes and salt. It's a hell of lot cheaper and it's a lot faster than needing to drink a liter of water for just 1000mg of salt with those LMNT packs or Gatorade. You can do 2000mg of salt with just 12oz of water, which is great when you're really sweating, like in our southern summers.
@JeremiahStringer2 жыл бұрын

Don't think you were using or comparing to an actual Stanley cook pot. The Stanley Adventure Two Cup Set (the size most likely to be used backpacking) has a lid, a similar locking handle to the GSI, and it has volume markings in the pot. The Stanley without the cups is only 220g. I don't have the GSI, but someone on the questions section of the Amazon listing says the pot itself weighs 200g and the lid weighs 10g. So, that just does not seem like an obvious swap. Ditching the spoon you say to ditch leaves the cup. it is nice that it fits inside and the pot lid can fit on it. The cups that come with the Stanley are not that great (in many people's opinion) but one could buy the Stanley and a preferred cup (popular to use a Sea-to-Summit X-Cup that fits inside or a metal camp cup that fits outside around the bottom) as replacements for the cups and it would still be cheaper than the GSI but still possibly around the same weight. Of course, the GSI has a larger volume (so that is a pro for GSI if you need to cook with that much volume at once) which is probably why the weight ends up about the same. But, the GSI seems to be less durable with aluminum and a non-stick coating. The non-stick might be helpful if you're doing more than boiling water, but it can get scratched and probably shouldn't cook on an open fire (but could with the Stanley if you ended up needing to like if you ran out of fuel or something). Switching to a similar sized titanium pot does make sense. They are pretty much equal (even in price if you find it on AliExpress or similar sites like you mentioned) but with weight savings.

Disagree on the Canisterstoves, they end up being heavier bc of the fuel container, and they produce a lot of trash. The problem with the alcohol stove is it's an UL one, so it's not well engineered for safety or stabiliy. It does fine for narrow pots, to boil water, and that's about it. Anything other and you have to get a pot stand, and a windshield. Instead just buy a premade kit - the Trangia has been known to overlast their users. You also have multiple knockoffs fyi

Whatever happened to cooking food over a wood fire? I'll see people with these jet stove things going, and they're sitting next to a fire pit.

Love it, but some pots aren't really made for it. It blacks the pot and can damage the coating

Nothing wrong with acrylic beanies. If it’s so wet outside that your beanie is going to be soaked, chances are you’re going to be wearing a hooded rain shell over it. Your head also generates a ton of heat, so that beanie is going to dry really fast, if it does get wet. There are a lot of thru-hikers hundreds of miles into their hikes still rocking their acrylic Carhartt beanies. If they sucked, they would have ditched them in the first 200 miles.
