Makes sense that Ryan, Rob and the production team are super interested in the stories and the history of the community. They know how important an authentic, emotionally compelling, story is to the audience who have never heard of Wrexham until now. And even if you want to remain skeptical, or cynical, about their intensions; if they're primary goal is, for example, to use this investment to build up their various brands, burnish their images, or even get rich off of promotions, they would still want to build a successful club in order to achieve all that.

I think you mean "are independently wealth and can afford to lose money for a number of years on the club". No way the amount of money the little apple TV show is netting and a few of the sponsorships fully offset how much they are spending right now. Best thing about having them is that they are entertainers who automatically bring a ton of eyes, and with those eyes sponsors. And most importantly if they do anything shady here it could hurt their career badly, whereas you would just expect something shady it if it was some business person buying it to get a return on investment, and it wouldn't affect those people's career at all.

My understanding is that the profits from the Welcome to Wrexham docuseries are all being put back into the football club. I don't think they have any intention to make money from the football club, except in two possible areas. First to grow the value of the club so their investment increases in value, and secondly as a way of staying in the public eye which helps their own personal brands. They way they do that is to improve the football club, get them promoted back into the Leagues and go from there. If they can grow the club to League One or higher status they will easily grow the value of the club, especially since with the docuseries, you will get a load of overseas fans that would otherwise never have become fans, which means shirt sales, advertiser revenue etc. They are being very smart in the way that they are doing this, because the additional exposure from the docuseries and the revenues are going to basically pay for what is going into the football club, or at the very least mitigate it in large part. Plus if you check out the list of sponsors they have, because of the docuseries, it's amazing.

Can't blame some of the locals for being a bit standoff-ish at first, they had been struggling in the past with owners but now with Rob and Ryan the team, the club and the city are getting back their positive attitude and can enjoy again the football side of things without worrying too much if the team will survive one more season. Even if the boys had no clue about the sport itself they were clear n honest about it from the start but they have proven their intentions, they want to build a successful team and to make it into a self-sufficient organization in the long term, what other owner has done that? The docuseries is a great insight on not just the team but the whole town n even football culture n I loved it. Looking forward to the future seasons

Cynical seems to be the point and narrative of this interview. You haven't bothered to watch a single minute of the docu-series to form your own opinion but quote others that seem like haters. Another point would be that you seem to discount the money, effort, and risk these two people are expending in a different country and a sport they admittedly don't know anything about. I am not saying that you need to be a cheerleader for these two but you (and some others evidently) don't even want to extend the benefit of the doubt about their motives. Look at what is happening, look at the response of the people of the town, the confidence of the football club. Seems like there is positive movement and genuine enthusiasm where there was no hope and a dying club before.

One point that @brynlaw mentioned that can't be stressed enough... the idea of a teams potential "progression" that doesn't exist in North American sports... and the fact that many followers here in the states don't consider or are simply unawares of... Ryan Reynolds is an investor... he has shown that to be true... and what's to stop Wrexham from becoming the next Manchester United 20 years out? Not saying it will happen... and I am not saying this to be syndical either... ManUnited has huge revenue streams from all manner of sources... Wrexham could become that and the momentum is verifiably in their favor now. It's a great way to end up "owning the New York Yankees" without having to spend a gajillion dollars on it... which is what it would take in the US. I genuinely believe that both guys are trying to improve the club and benefit the town... whilst benefitting themselves. There will be side effects as well that some locals may not like 5 years dowen the road... but you have to take the good with the bad. I don't care about sports at all... I am a conspiracy theorist that enjoys narratives... this one is really good. I don't smell "dirt" on this one and I have a nose for it.

hearing bryn law talk about the investment going into the club (staff, players etc), id imagine that was why the documentary was pre-arranged. the new owners knew they’d need to spend so they thought to secure that investment through a contract with disney. surely that’s the most obvious angle? you could be cynical about any financial venture and say that it’s “just for personal gain” but to a certain extent that is the point? problems occur when that gain is designed to the detriment of the club, which evidently isn’t the case here - its especially strange when you’re saying that the chief gain is an ego boost, who cares if that’s the reason when the finances are stable!
@reeleyes466 Жыл бұрын
There are hundreds of clubs around Britain founded in the 1860s, 70s and 80s - Wrexham is not unique in that and neither is it a 'hotbed' - there are clubs all around in non league or local regional leagues, playing on the same ground in that time. Maidenhead Utd are the longest oldest club that played ONLY football on the same ground.
