I think this is the first game where sharks aren't the stereotypical enemy creatures...and The Great white shark in this game is proof that sharks aren't evil and all that jazz...more games should be like this where sharks can be intimidating but gentle..so far Abzu is a 1000/10 for me :)
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
It's not the first. There's no hostile animals at all in the original Endless Ocean from 2007 either, which includes Great Whites. There's also Depth Hunter 2, Reefshot and, for now at least, World of Diving. Technically the Great Whites in Assassin's Creed IV and Rogue aren't either. You always have to attack them first.
@bryanpoon25868 жыл бұрын
+BrySkye Ah Endless ocean a good game....and yeah The other games you mentioned don't show Great whites being aggressive either..but what I love about The Great White in Abzu is that it has personality and I love when games give something personality whether be robots or a plant.
@xaphon898 жыл бұрын
Though sharks in general are rarely aggressive towards humans, great whites do tend to be on the slightly more aggressive side compared to, say, hammerheads or reef sharks. But ever since Jaws, we've seen great whites time and again portrayed as the serial killers of the sea (that's orcas, people), so this was a nice subversion of that trope.
@xaphon898 жыл бұрын
Like I said, I was really tired when I posted that. Didn't mean for it to come across that way, sorry. I know a lot about what you've posted, I also have an interest in shark and ray conservation and you're on point, so my choice of words earlier wasn't thought out. I see threads like this on tons of videos about sharks, especially videos about conservation or that are supposed to be educational. Someone comes in and dumps all over it. Sharks are vicious animals, they say, they're evil, they'll attack you, culling is justified, finning isn't a problem, the great barrier reef can fuck itself, etc. People like that, like Italo, aren't interested in learning and are unlikely to change their opinions. Apparently I'm a "very sensitive person" (lol), I must be some bleeding heart hippie to care about shark conservation. I just don't see the point in arguing with these people and I think it makes those interested in conservation look bad, but hey I just dumped a couple paragraphs in here, what am I doing? Hopefully you get a better idea where I'm coming from. It's not up to me to police how other people post on the internet though, so I'm gonna stay out of this now.

Abzu is one of my favorite games to watch others play. It allows me to judge a persons creativity, open mindedness, path of thinking, etc. This game is extraordinary, not just for its use of emotion and connection with ALL Sea life, but the fact that it's a perfect analogy showing mankinds impact on the environment. Throughout the game, you come across deadzones as well as machines. The little robots are seen broken down with oil having seeped into the surrounding sand and rock. I think what's most wonderful is there is almost no reward for destroying the machines and bringing life back, other than just seeing the beauty of a working ecosystem. Yet, almost everyone who plays doesn't notice the lack of a reward and is perfectly happy being at one with nature. I think this game allows us to see that we are meant to live in harmony with nature, and that we have to change the way society sees nature.

"A modern day interactive Fantasia segment." This is quite an apt comparison for capturing the approach and feel of the game. I kept wondering to myself how to describe it to someone when trying to recommend the game. "It's a little like ballet" I thought, with the movement on screen matching up with the music and the two complementing each other to tell a story without spoken dialogue, but the comparison still didn't quite fit for me.

I'd like to think so. I was pretty happy with scripting that, though after it was uploaded I found that a couple of reviews, including IGN I think, had made the comparison. So most people will probably think I'm just parroting them. :P C'est la vie, c'est la vie.

Heh, I never read any reviews (I tend to avoid them). Regardless, it's a good way to sum up the game without having to go out of your way insisting it's not a diving simulator. I think without at least seeing some footage, many people would likely mistake it for such.

I know that I'm a little bit late to be commenting on these, but I just finished all three of your sharks in gaming videos and just felt the need to thank you for taking a deep dive into this topic. I really loved your analysis on the different portrayals of sharks and found all of the information given to be really interesting. I tried playing Abzu when it first came out but I have a terrible fear of water that is either dark where you can't see either below or above you or water that is very open, so I put it off and never went back to it. After seeing this video though I am determined to go back and complete it. It's such a beautiful game, the scene where the great white died and then later when it was revived both made me tear up. It's so refreshing and, as you said, very special to see a great white portrayed so beautifully and with such empathy.

What a nice video. You made me discover the Basking Shark!!! I had not spotted it during my first playthrough. And what a game, by the way... I just loved it so much and just can't understand how the other people don´t... It made me remember when I was 12 playing Ecco The Dolphin in Sega Genesis and, just like now, I loved it and everybody else thought it was boring as hell...
@jollywriter62588 жыл бұрын
I think the basking shark is found where it is because they didn't want to startle (read *scare*) the common/casual gamer. I love sharks but when you showed the basking shark, even I was startled for a second by its gaping mouth. Obviously I just laughed at myself and enjoyed the fact there's a basking shark in Abzu! (Didn't know that...) So maybe it being a little hard to find could be a bit of a treat for those brave enough to travel down into the depths outside of the linear path the game sets. Like the whales down where you can find the basking shark. I haven't played the game, just seen others play it, and I just recently saw those whales because someone was brave enough to go down and discover them. Finding Grey Reefsharks where you would more likely find the Silky Sharks is a weird mistake, though....

If I'd like to be a service. I am fairly certain that helicoprion is definitly no longer considered a shark, but a different group of extinct fishes closest related to ratfish like you said. That is to say, despite there being plenty of room for speculation, the helicoprion in ABZU is pretty similar to most accurate depiction I have seen of the genus, making it still a remarkable animal netherless. Amazing and breathtaking video as always. Will be sharing this XD.
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was trying to leave wiggle room with that part, just saying likes like it "may" be slightly outdated. Most of the pictures I could find when fact checking are very similar to Abzu, but there were one or two which show the whirl as being further back and at least one with it actually in the back of the throat. Given the most recent text descriptions, I tried not to commit too much. Who knows what we'll be saying in a few years time! Same way I just outright avoided talking about the Carcharodon vs Carcharocles debate with Megalodon. :P But yeah, I think a lot of people that see it will instantly say ancient shark, so by putting it in here, I could mention that it's not one. I think BestInSlot did, who's one of the bigger KZbinrs when it comes to prehistoric gaming. He also mentioned the teeth unravelling outwards, which is why I mentioned that's no longer considered the case.
@ScanovatheCarnotaurus8 жыл бұрын
BrySkye the general public does consider it a shark, but thanks to the general prehistoric community catching on to this misconception it probably won't last long. Nice talking to you bro.
@dexxboii30808 жыл бұрын
+BrySkye Most recent studies do suggest that C. carcharias is more related to Isurus than megatooth sharks which then places C. megalodon in Otodontidae as Carcharocles although it's not exactly confirmed.
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
And that's exactly why I said "But let's not get into the taxonomy debate here" during a 12 minute segment of an already 85 minute video. :P It only came up at all because the shark in ARK: Survival Evolved is called "Carcharodon Ultramegalodon." I just call it Megalodon or C. Megalodon. I still tend to think of it as Carcharodon, but that's purely out of tradition instead of science and I'll admit that. I wouldn't try to build any kind of debate out of it though! Always tends to happen. We still have scientists and astronomers that insist Pluto still be a full fledged planet.
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
No no, I'm not trying to say you were starting anything, not at all. I'd like to think intelligent, non-aggressive exchanges of information would be the norm, but I've been on KZbin for far to long to believe that! ;) It's just future-proofing as much as anything else.

Yeah, that was pretty much entirely down to them *technically* not being true sharks. Footage was recorded, just didn't make the final edit. If you're asking if the game is free, then no, it's not. Though it has been discounted in sales on both Steam for PC and PSN for PS4. It's only recently been released on Xbox One, though it'll probably be in a sale on Xbox Live at some point. If you're asking if *I* was paid anything from the developers/publishers in order to promote it, I can categorically state that I was not. Nor did I get a free copy or anything of the sort. I have never received free games or 'sponsorship' to feature any game, ever.

Why no megalodon in this game
@BrySkye6 жыл бұрын
I can think of a few reasons. First, the only place it could be is the prehistoric/extinct section. which is a bit confined for something so large. Second, I don't think the devs would have liked to encourage the idea that C. Megalodon is not actually extinct (The Discovery channel has done so much damage with dressing up fictional entertainment shows as documentaries). Third, it would have rather overshadowed the significance of the Great White Shark in the game, which is basically the only other 'character' in the game other than the diver.

Why did he say "Hell ih cup ryan"? It's pronounced "Hell ih cawp ree awn"

I actually checked ahead of time in a few documentaries, because I was paranoid about getting that wrong. It's probably just a difference between nationalities. Being a Brit, I sourced British ichthyologists.

I wish megalodon was in this game.
@BrySkye8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure they thought about it in some way, but its for the best that they didn't. It would kind of take away from the games big moment with the Great White if, only moments later, you bump into a very similar looking shark that is three times the size. An easter egg like a set of fossil Meg jaws or teeth would have been pretty nifty though.

+BrySkye it would be cool to see megalodon attacking the whales.

Andrew Semuas There is a prehistoric section. I think they should've used the megalodon in that.

Mhmm, if we go by the biologically accurate no claspers rule (which only a couple of games actually model. Saving them polygons I suppose) I do actually say "We'll be seeing quite a bit of her" in the video at 4:31 :)
