This was literally my experience in my Evo X at the RAC track in WA. Turned off the individual wheel braking which stops the car from rotating and end of the next main straight I immediately lost spinning 180 off into the sand. It's amazing how much it helps and you can barely tell it's doing so in the dry (in the wet it's a lot more noticable). In both cases I had the "traction control" off which limits throttle - so no throttle limiting - just disabling the ABS based stability control or not which in the Evo X you do by holding down the traction control button for 3 seconds (single press disables the Traction Throttle Limiting).

Glad to hear you guys are aware about the header/tune situation! I drove one of these as a race car with only headers/exhaust, a tune, and new tires with a suspension. It was an absolute monster around a track without that torque dip and 35~ more RWHP. I even have a video of me passing a twin-turbo lambo in it. I hope you guys give it the little extra push it needs and take it back out! It's also interesting that the torque dip is intentional to keep fuel economy and street drivability for their target market, which was 40+ businessmen. While I think it's still a silly decision, it effectively means that the car is a blank slate. It is one of the most capable chassis to come out in a very, very long time. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with for the next step in this car's journey!

No one likes getting passed by a Miata - that’s why everyone hates them, bc they are so good. 😉 I have had 3 Miatas, and owned a BRZ. The BRZ was great. Sport mode on or all nannies off is the way to go. The issue though is no low end torque. It’s much slower than it looks. Passing cars on a 1 lane each direction road wasn’t easy - the other car gets upset you are passing them (while they are on their cell phone doing 10 under the speed limit), and they hit the gas. Then you are side by side. Just not enough power when you really need it - but plenty of power 95% of the time. Moog - that shift light is programmable. You can set it for the rpm you want it to come on. Nothing to do with the car itself warning you - the previous owner just chose that rpm. The manual shifter in that car is so good. Awesome feel. The seats are great. The low seating position and low COG just help the car corner so nicely. What’s even better is the “center point” of rotation of the car feels like it’s right in front of your body (or at your body if you have the seat more forward), so the car rotates around you. So amazing - no way to describe how much a part of the car you feel driving one at the limits. Hoping the next gen doesn’t lose that charm but gets more power to match its abilities!
@keon57794 жыл бұрын

@Bob Dole WRX? Might want to do some research. There are so many reasons to pick up an MX-5/BRZ/86 instead. RWD coupe is just the way to go if you enjoy driving.
@stephen31644 жыл бұрын
Bob Dole - I sold my BRZ after 4 years. I have an STi hatch now. I had a WRX wagon for 14 years, 4 of which were alongside the BRZ. My STi has the JDM Spec C suspension and bushings. Handles great, enough power to keep me happy and out of trouble, and amazing in all weather. Still, when you got in a BRZ, it felt like putting on a suit. The car was an extension of you. The STi is better in every way except that connection.
@stephen31644 жыл бұрын
Marco V - I have an S197 Mustang GT as a second car. It’s fun but big and heavy and spins the tires too easily. Bumps upset the rear and it tries to pass the front. Would rather have my BRZ back many times - EXCEPT when dealing with some traffic around LA where people don’t let you over, etc, and you have to do a quick 60-90mph pull in a small window to escape your “box”. The BRZ couldn’t do those. But my STi handles slightly better than my Mustang. Both modified for handling. They’re close - but feel completely different. Honestly, had Subaru given the BRZ the turbo engine from the WRX, it would have been amazing.

@@autohans540 it's easy and pretty usable, but if you're going to spend a lot of time sideways like on a skidpan you definitely need to do the pedal dance. Just holding the TC buttons, it will turn off most of the aids but after a while you'll notice ABS behaving weirdly and braking some of your wheels while you try mess around. Pedal dance is the way and easy once you've done it a few times
@Vracer1114 жыл бұрын
@@matthewvanzyl6158 Long hold press of button (even though not fully off like with pedal dance) is still way better than using sport mode on track. Sport mode interferes too much when it doesn't need to on sticky tires. If you are going to track one of these, at minimum do full hold after starting the car before going out of paddock/pits (since can't be done at speed unlike sport mode). Full hold still has EBD active...if you want that off go all the way and do pedal dance.

Totally agree with track days. I had an old friend come out with a completely stock Camry and has been addicted ever since. I try to persuade people to give it a go, as long as your brakes aren't too worn and same with whatever all-seasons you have. It's the most fun you can have with your pants on

Nice to see someone on a race track who admits that the car is not the limiting factor, driver skill is, while saying they were glad to have the abs/tc aids. What a great way to get on the track safely while putting a major grin on your face. Lucky person.

My BRZ is a 2016 in Canada, I press and hold the TCS Off button for about 5 seconds and it turns most of it off unless you are getting wheels off the road. I've done full donuts in this mode and the traction control doesn't cut in. Once I've got the car up to temp and got a feel for the grip level at the track I switch to this mode. I'm pretty smooth with my inputs so I don't have any issues in this mode. It's only when you try to Chuck it about too much that you hear the abs grabbing brakes

You guys should do some rallycross style racing, doesn't have to be anything radical but flying over a mix of dirt, gravel, and pavement has been more fun to me recently than road track. I've been running what started life as a 70's Super Beetle and is now a front engine AWD powered by a 1.8T 225 Quattro powertrain. Custom chassis starting with Audi TT subframes and suspension with Body attached pretty much like a regular Beetle with a cage added in. It's road legal and still has air con/heat with proper insulation but rubber flooring instead of carpet, modern gauge cluster, shifter, seats, etc. Have had to road trip it a couple times, not half bad after swapping back for road tires and adjusting the suspension.

Subaru's creativity with headrests is interesting. The rear seat headrests in the BH wagons can be removed and put back from the bottom at the back of the seat, so you can store them when not needed, adding more clear view out of the rearview mirror. My '02 Outback also has the shortened center headrest to help add to rear visibility, which is low enough I don't have to remove.

something about having to work at getting the BRZ (86) to go fast seems a lot more appealing than going fast in a car that is already inherently fast. A BRZ was at the top of my next car list, but as fate would have it, a WRX wound up in the garage purely from the 4-door practicality stand point. It wasn't the power, but everyday usefullness plus the wife said "NO" to both the MX-5 and the BRZ. I don't mind slow, as long as it sounds good and has good connectedness/feel. I like this series, and will watch all the way to the end. Cheers.

You can turn off the stability control more than just the vsc sport button. Press and hold on the traction control button for 5 seconds turns off traction control and stability control. It lets you get even more sideways than just the vsc sport button. Then the next step is the pedal dance thing with hand brake and brake pedal.

18:00 Turn 2 at SMP, in something with a bit more power you can treat it like a double-apex by running in deep, get the turning done and straighten up the exit. But with a low powered car it's probably better to trail brake into the corner and hug the inside line as you slowly feed in the throttle and let it run out wider on exit.
