I used to skate with Hensley, all the time, growing up in Vista. Good times. One of the coolest guys you'll ever meet. Helluva skateboarder and human being. Thanks for your awesome videos, TG. Can't get enough.

Anything that can be said about the influence that Hensley had on today's skateboarding could be an understatement. Of course, Mullen and the Gonz, but they already got a lot of credit. Natas, yes, huge influence deal but at least people recognize the Natas spin. But this guy was huge, huge, and nobody seems to remember him.

Great seeing/listening to all these guys again. From Natas to Dressen to Hensley i'm always amazed how humble these guys are in their interviews.

It was crazy. It was Hensley mania. Then Plan b with so much hype. An incredible team. I imagine self doubt would creep in as people like Pat Duffy came from nowhere destroying largehandrails. Mike Carroll, and Rick and others like koston who where taking it to next level. Now it's different. U can do your own thing your own way and still be appreciated. Back then, if u weren't doing the latest tricks, u felt left behind. Skaters would stop doing tricks as trick fashion would play part. Like impossibles and late shoves were everywhere in 91. By 92 no one did them.

That was great! Can't wait for part 2! Those H-Street videos.....man we watched them daily. we all tried to copy Matt's personal style too. Camo cargos, chain wallet, etc.. lol Still the man!

Stoked on this interview so far. Would it be too far a stretch to get Jason Lee on? Or Gonz? Or hell, since I'm making it a wish list, might as well top it off with Neil Blender... pull that one off and you will have nailed the interview of the century.

This guy was so ahead of his time. I was somewhere between 10-12 when "this is not the new h-street video" came out and Matt Hensley was instantly my favorite skater. I had a VHS copy from a friend and I must have watched it every single day that summer before going out to skate. I watched it so much that I knew exactly the time on the tape that Matt's part started and eventually the tape broke. I scotch taped the broken bits back together, but his part now started with the lyrics "kinnarrow" and the snare roll intro. To this day when I hear that song, the intro seems foreign. The song basically goes right into "all I know is that I don't know" and Matt grabbing his board. Great times. Also, Phat Klown shorts are impossible to find.

M, Ouija,, That was a EPIC summer! A lot went down.. I think that's the summer we learned impossibles and tre flips. and I was able to (FINALLY) lipslides the awesome small concrete benches @ local supermarket. what a awesome feeling rolling away fakie on a lipslide. esp if it's a short lipslide so it's like a 180 but barely touching the bench...Always loved the feeling of rolling away fakie on tricks..esp 180 flips over a candybar wrapper or manhole etc.....FastForward(ha youre VHS ;) So FF to the Tom penny era-- I can't think about rolling away Fakie without remembering his steez with every fakie landing. str8 gnar! but that summer was awesome and I remember that video being huge for me..I sooooo didn't handle to great exodus from H-street to Steve Rocco plan b. it bothers me now in my old age..i would love for Tony Magnusson to write a book...cause he went from being the king of skateboarding to his company folding..And it was H-street that dethroned Powell Peralta (b4 WOrld Industries/Rocco) seems like skating got ghetto once they left H-street for World.. whatevs.

89 was the most pivotal point in sk8ing, tricks were getting more technical and boards were changing for the better. Matt was def the man of the hour.

Hensley was so inspirational to every skater in every Suburbia back then. I always looked at Hensley as Skatings 1st uniform that wasn't dorky like Steve Cab & Hosoi with Feathers flailing & half shirts. This era of the late 80's and maybe 1990-1992 was my fav for sure. but everyone likes it when they we're coming up.
@bennyshambles4 жыл бұрын
Totally. The older skaters in my suburb worshipped Hensley in 1989/90. I was 10 and had a board, had seen Shackle Me Not and the Powell videos, but didn’t really start skating until I was 14 and Hensley had retired the year before. I have been fascinated and obsessed with the 1989-1992 era since, trying to find out what happened (SO much). I only had glimpses over the years from my friend’s older brother (the best neighborhood skater). The first revelation once I started skating again was when my best friend showed me a VHS dub of Video Days and Life: A Soldier’s Story. Then seeing the Questionable Hensley retrospective/retirement part helped shed some light. Thing were SO much different pre-internet; we really had to work for any relevant information about the skateboarding history.
