New Spring Cup and Circlip now ordered to fix the dodgy Kickstarter Ratchet Mechanism. I'm very pleased with how this work turned out. Thanks very much to all who have watched, commented and supported. Best wishes, Dean.

It's great to see a project that works out perfectly. Brilliant setup. It will be fit & forget. I did wonder about the outer cover clearance, but not a problem with your mods. Regards. Steve.

Hi Dean, You should be proud of yourself for putting a great set of video's together for this clutch conversion. I saw Ade's comments about your riveting but I would be disappointed if the end result had been anything less with your background ! Whilst riveting is perceived as a bit of a menial task, aircraft standard riveting like that is not known by everyone, and it was a great demonstration and explanation........I actually have some skin pins from my Dad when he worked on Gloster Meteors during the Korean conflict. With the clutch pushrod are you going heat treat it before engine final assembly? These are oil quenched (cherry red first) if you didn't know (which I'm sure you did). I make and sell a lot of those. The kickstart ratchet spring and cup is retained by the wire circlip onto the clutch as one unit and then fed onto the mainshaft and the cup doesn't ride up against the bearing. You probably knew that too! As a side note that ratchet spring and cup Michelle at Rex Caunt happily supplies me so I can supply customers here. I'd have to go to the expense to tool and have things like that made, however we (the retailers) have a great working relationship where we are supplying each other with items we are having manufactured, to maintain a parts supply at reasonable price to all. You've done a great series of video's for this task which will become the benchmark for the future...........I know where to send my customers now when they ask me about this. Great job mate.....

Bones, thank you very much for your kind words. I will be heat treating the push rod ends prior to final fitment, I'm definitely going to explore a revised clutch lifter arrangement in the future too. I think the Kickstarter Ratchet Spring Cup will need to be replaced too, it does look a bit worse for wear. We'll have to catch up soon, I'll give you a bell when it's convenient for you. Best wishes, Dean.

Absolutely brilliant, no two ways about it. You have improved on this modification by an order of magnitude. I hope you get a lot more viewers and subscribers and I sincerely hope that anyone who does similar to you gives full credit to you. You have taken what is at best a half way house and engineered it to its logical zenith. Loved seeing Ted getting involved, I hope he enjoyed his Easter egg. Fantastic rivetting exposition. I remember years ago, trying to get a repair done with 3/16 monel csk rivets like those on a Nimrod tail pack precooler duct. Titanium ducting, about half the rivets reacted in the gap and I spent the rest of the day trying to drill out the work hardened swines. Great days.

I've never seen riveting taken to such an art form, amazing result. I would be interested in a demonstration of the riveting done with the air hammer 👍
@retromechanicalengineer
@retromechanicalengineer Жыл бұрын
I can do that, normally the hammer would drive against the head of the rivet and a reaction block or 'buck' would be used to form the tail. Where an absolutely flawless finish is required, such as on the record breaking aircraft like the Fairey Delta, a shaped buck would be used against the head and the reaction would be 'tail gunned'.
