BSA Gold Star 600 ABSAF short ride.

This machine was brought over by the owner of another machine which I was helping out with. The BSA was just brought here for me to have a try on and see what I thought. It had a 600 cc ABSAF engine, 5 speed gearbox, belt primary drive, Mikuni carb, alloy rims and original magneto ignition. It ran very smoothly and had lots of power, but felt a bit low geared. This is probably a machine which should be tested in comparison with the new 'BSA Gold Star'. My money would be on this one!

Must admit I was screaming at the traffic to pull over!!! That was a time machine taking me back to the 60's and my misspent youth! All of us has Goldies, Beesa twins a couple of Bonnies one Norton and one Velocette! The noise was great when we set off out. That is what yor ride brought back to this elderly hooligan! Thanks! I am surprised that the owner didn't put the electric starter conversion on it as well. I love my small collection of BSA C-15 250' s. Easy to start and no vibration to speak of. I love when Harley people record me Kick-starting one of my vintage motorcycles.

That must be geared right down! I remember my brother's proper cafe racer Goldie in the '60's and he had to slip the clutch until he got to 25-30MPH. He was an RAF apprentice aircraft-fitter at the time and his bikes were immaculate and seriously tuned for speed.

This has a 5 speed gearbox, but could be geared higher.

Their engine is better than stock. Many improvements compared to the original. I would put a belt drive on it if it is available. Much less maintenance than a chain, cheaper in the long run as well.That bike is owned by a real rider who rides motorcycles instead of just polishing them.

The modifications have made for a very rideable machine which has removed many of the idiosyncrasies that make the DBD34 so difficult to live with. if in the higher tuned package. Personally my only dread was being caught up in traffic where the clutch had a mind of its own, It;s almost impossible to buy an original 500 cc Goldstar because sadly the majority offered for sale are of a spurious nature, It's simplicity itself to doctor frame and engine numbers and it takes an expert mettalurgist to detect the fraud, Definitely over priced and over hyped. but the people who indulge in this pastime are buying a dream. not a motorcycle. and that's just how life should be, You are doing a grand job. paul.

Are there any different crankshaft gears (with the original Goldie there was a selction of sprockets18-23 t But that was with the 4 speed gearbox) all new 500 DBD.s came with the 23t which was for used for the I O Man TT and the faster circuits of the day.

The owner told me all parts are interchangeable with original BSA items, so I would think engine sprockets could be used and swapped, although this machine uses a belt driven clutch, so it may not be so easy to alter the primary gearing.
