I bought one as a second Sunday ride bike. For that, it's perfect. I fitted Hagon shocks, a de-cat exaust, plus fuel optimiser. Those mods improve the bike no end. As you kept pointing out, it's a 5k bike and built to a price. Mine puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Yes, there have been issues with some bikes, as there have been with some European and Japanese bikes over the years. What mine does for me is to take me back to basics, and a time when bikes were just bikes, and not ridiculously technological and unaffordable. It's cheap and great fun. I love mine.

Please do more bikes at the lower end of the price spectrum! Bikes in the 40-90 bhp range are more than enough for our congested potholed roads that rarely have more than a 5 mile stretch of raid between 30 mph limits. Love the channel

Good to see you doing some different styles of bikes Chopsie. Don’t want to be only known as the sports bike reviewer. I personally would rather see reviews of these than the skyscraper high hyper-motards or adventure bikes that I would need a ladder to ride

I own a Gold Star 650 Legacy Edition, the one with lots of chrome and no, tacky go faster stripes. The first mod I did was to swap out the stock rear shocks for a pair of Girling fully enclosed units, they suit the style of the Goldie better and vastly imprfove the handlin g and road holding. My second mod was to replace the modern looking horn with a 1950's replica Lucas style horn. The Gold Star 650 is a great machine to own and ride, people that I meet are always complementing the BSA's styling, it is a keeper.

I bought mine a year ago (full price) and had quite a few problems with it cutting out, warning lights etc but Alf’s at Worthing sorted it all out for me and now I love it. It’s a keeper and that is what people should realise. When they are sorted they are great bikes, economical, easy to service and easy to live with.

Nice review. I'm enjoying mine so much I've hardly ridden my zx12r this year. It's such an easy bike to ride on today's roads littered with pot holes and 50mph limits, which my zx12r is really hard work on. After owning big sportsbikes for over 25 years I never imagined I could have so much fun on a 45bhp 55Nm single.

I know it's a bike that typically falls outside the scope of your channel, but you do have a knack for respecting this bike for what it is and reporting on its characteristics in a very unbiased manner, so well done you. I'm tempted to say there maybe is scope on your channel to review other machines such as this, as there's clearly a market out there for them and potential buyers will undoubtedly appreciate it. It's not a bike for me, but it is british and is a nice looking thing, so thanks for the insight and entertainment. Take care.

I too have one and I think it's a cracking little bike. You need to accept it for what it was intended for; mine makes me smile every time I ride it. The engine light on mine goes off for some time, then comes on for a bit before going again; the fuel map needs work for our climate but it's nothing to worry about. I will confess this isn't my only bike as I need an all year commuter plus an adrenalin fix bike. I bat around A and B roads on mine at a respectful rate of knots and get over 70mpg from it: what's not to like!
@nickrider52202 күн бұрын
Have to agree with you Chopsy, it can be alot of fun riding a slower bike. Honest, fun and affordable bikes are the way ahead. Modern life is so expensive, houses eat huge amounts of people's salaries, basic bikes are still fun and will get more people on 2 wheels. Expensive bikes are self limiting, a dead end, only a small percentage of riders can afford them and huge performance isn't a guarantee of more enjoyment ....

Good to see you reviewing bikes like this. Last year I decided to buy my first retro at the age of 51. I was all set to buy the BSA because as a kid I used to love Boon(remember that program?) and he had an old BSA which partly got me into bikes but these were actually 6.5 grand last year. In the end and after watching lots of KZbin reviews I changed my mind and decided on the RE interceptor instead(partly due to the Missenden Flyers love of the Interceptor)I found one secondhand with under 500 miles on and about a grands worth of mods for £5000 and love it. However had the BSA been £5000 back then Id probably have one now as part of me still wishes I bought the BSA. Oh and yes can you and Greg do a back to back with these bikes. Id love that. Wishing you a early happy new year 👍

1970 colonial cycle sales in Orlando, Florida had an original gold star for 900 bucks which was a lot of money back then especially for a used bike me and my friend s lusted after that bike but we were kids 😊This bike really looks good and sounds like it performs really well too. Would love to see a retro comparison, especially from a view point of one not truly into them. There’s still no one doing better motorcycle reviews BTW. As I’ve aged I’m tending towards retro/cruisers (owing a ‘20 T120 Diamond Edition and a ‘23 R18 100 Years Anniversary) with my ZX14 up for sale. Riding about without ones ass on fire is actually therapeutic, seeing the environment instead of a continual blur is a refreshing change worth experiencing. Thank you for many years of entertaining content, be well and a very healthy and happy New Year for you and yours!!!

How about this , get em to lend you one long term and do a tune up and a bit of customization with whats available , also compare it to the RE 450 , must admit I've been fancying one of these only thing with it was they took so long to bring to the market and RE and Triumph have kind of got the retro British market tied up , meaning its a difficult market to sell an unknown bike into . Personally I think they should have started with a BSA A10 650 twin rep as a starter or even a 750 to up the game with the RE 650 its main rival . Anyway nice to get an aging hooligans point of view on the retro scene , keep it coming Chopsy loved it .

It's a great looker. Unfortunately it's not on sale here in Canada. I really like the styling of the front hub and brake. Beautiful looking retro motorcycle as you say. I spoke with BSA at ABR and asked if this was powered by a Rotax engine and they catagorically said NO. The Rotax engine is a 652 cc water cooled single cylinder with a 4 valve DOHC. It has all of the characteristics that you describe so it can't be, can it?

The Bsa is a 652cc single with water cooled engine and 4 valve DOHC same as old rotax fitted in BMW 650. Whether it is built by rotax or just a copy built in india is the question I would like answering. Rotax built engines were/are very reliable.

There's a lot to be said about bikes like this. Not everyone needs 150bhp. It's a potterer and that's just fine. I wonder if they will cater for different markets with maybe a cafe racer (after all the Goldie was one of the original cafe racers) and maybe a trials version which the Goldie also did well. No comparison really. The Interceptor has a proper modern engine design and is built by Royal Enfield whereas the BSA is a totally outsourced project with a tarted up version of the old Aprilia Pegaso / BMW F650 engine. If you must have a single or go all weak kneed at the sight of a BSA badge then fair enough. Otherwise the Interceptor is the better bike.

As a local boy, Chopsy, are you aware of the Southampton connection with BSA? One of the owners prior to Mahindra was BSA Regal based in Southampton, who acquired the brand in around 1994. (I remember passing their offices in West Quay on my way to the Honda dealer, Rye's.) Between 1997 and 2000 they did a limited run of their version of the Gold Star, which used a Yamaha SR500 engine. Quite a handsome machine - do a Google search and check it out. BSA Regal is still in Southampton today, although it is now solely an engineering company and not involved in bike production. You can see BSA Regal white vans around locally still sporting the red winged BSA logo if you keep your eyes peeled.

Actually BSA stands for Birmingham Small Arms. That picture that you flashed up supposedly of a Gold star was the wrong bike and that one is actually a Rocket Gold Star (A10) - a 650 twin and not at all the basis for this new BSA Goldstar in any way. To be honest, the new BSA is more like a day to day plodder B33 than Goldstar which was built as an uncompromising sports bike. Other than that, a fair appraisal. I've had an Enfield Interceptor and am thinking of getting one of these.

One of these would be quite good to do some traveling on and run into the ground mostly because it’s cheap out the box but as a modern retro calling itself a BSA Gold star which was actually a performance bike of its day, this modern interpretation is suffering from a bit of imposter syndrome I’d say.
@kevindarkstar2 күн бұрын
2:29 and right there is the problem with these and other retro cheap bikes they have loads of sensors which can throw up issues which aren't really issues, I had a meteor 350 a few years ago and that bugger had an engine warning light on about 5 or 6 times, reason oil temp to low!! WTF was eventually sorted by a ecu flash to change the India data on oil temp for cold old England 🤷🏻♂️

Interesting review & a good looking bike. Seems decent & for 5K you surely can't go wrong if you're in to classically styled retros. Speaking of which, I'm hoping next year you might get the chance to review the new Triumph Speed twin 1200 RS. Also a comparison with you & Greg on the updated Speed Twin 900 & new Moto Guzzi V7 Sport would be good as they're direct competitors. Maybe not typical for your channel, but both have been significantly updated down the neo-retro route & got quite a bit sportier. Should bring in some more viewers/subs too with a bit of a growing old disgracefully vibe for the old duffers & past it hooligans like me lol. ; )

@LambChopRides Good to hear, cheers. Looking forward to it. I was also surprised not to see you on that launch too when I saw all the other vloggers that were there. I presumed you couldn't make it. You haven't slagged Triumph off that I can recall lol so maybe they just wanted to mix it up with a different demographic this time? Most manufacturers have finally figured out that vloggers are a good thing, but in doing so, they now seem to be more specifically targetting certain channels that fit that bikes vibe. Maybe you just aren't "retro" enough yet Chops, which is a complement lol. Either way, hopefully you'll get on the next one. : )

Could be they've price dropped because of the latest batch of £5ooo bikes that have hit the market this year. The RE Guerilla, the Triumph 400 stuff or even the new Honda GB350S that we're getting soon - although that is a lot less grunt at around 20HP.
