This was recorded on stage at Boston Symphony Hall in the late evening hours of May 3, 2017. In this take, Toby Oft plays Rochut, Etude No. 23 start to finish in one take (take six).
Trombone Equipment:
Mouthpiece: Bresslmair, Y1-58, B58 Rim
Leadpipe: PE 1
Trombone: Edwards T350HB, Oft red bell,
Slide: Edwards TBCN (nickel crook)
The Recording Engineer was James Donahue and his crew at Whiskey Lane Productions with help of his students at the Berklee College of Music.
The microphones were entirely provided by Royer Labs.

the first time i heard this video the sound was coming out of my phone. i paused it after about six seconds of your playing and grabbed my good headphones because i knew that this was going to be something special. thank you so much for this.

Such a great example of sound. So much core and it's like I can hear over tones in every note. All of this and still so effortless. So efficient.

This is such a collaboration. An Italian tenor, a French trombonist, and now Mr. Oft, not to mention the audio engineers! When no one drops the ball, the end result is… amazing. Thanks so much!

I was just mentioning to my son last week when would you resume the Rochuts in spite of your busy schedule. I'm glad you were able to get 23 checked off the list! Sounded great!

Not this time - You probably remember me talking about stacking the air in our lessons? If you look closely, you can see me stacking in the short phrases before the end and then using that abundant stored air to support a long, last phrase. Thanks for the comment, Johnny!

Absolutely beautiful - your sound is so vibrant and full of life. Would you consider playing No. 10 or 13 when your schedule permits? Those are some of my favorites and it'd be phenomenal to hear you play them!
