I can see the value of this information. I myself use mostly stock plugins. There was time when I had the energy to try most free plugins available. One has to be careful because trying many plugins is a disease. Like playing video games. You don't know why you spend three days playing and you don't know why you keep trying plugins. And in the end I am using the stock parametric EQ and the stock limiter, stock synths and everything. So for those who have few hundred bucks I highly recommend to buy the full version of a DAW and use the stock plugins. Or if they are poor or cheap maybe get Reaper and use the free plugins from the web. I myself find it overwhelming using too many plugins. After all all that matters is the final result. Is there a good song with good production or not.

best plugin comparison I've seen, even though the lack of sound demos - still immensely informative and unbiased, great work! i was looking for a reverb, stumbled upon this video and the epicPLATE plugin - so far enjoying it very much, exactly what I was looking for. Plenty of great plugins mentioned here, grabbed SlickEQ and TAL-Chorus as well (needed a non-graphic EQ and a chorus) - and that's about it, I could be hunting for plugins all day long and forget about making music at all hahah

Bthelick, this is an outstanding comprehensive review. Thank you. Very well done. I've been an aficionado of free as well as paid plugins for a while, and this is really good. I would add Izotope Ozone EQ, which is also free, and a better replacement for Waves Q10, cos it does not cramp, and Izotope also has a % feature to adjust the gain of ALL the bands. I discovered so many free plugins from this video. One would need to watch this a few times, not just to get the list of plugins, but also to revisit the opinions expressed therein.

I love Gsat plus for saturation. It’s great for giving tracks different distortions. It has different stages and also you can add even or odd ordered harmonics easily. Oh yea it comes with clipping and over sampling.

Yes I have it but I don't like it. It just doesn't sound good to me on most sources. Much like the analog obsession stuff the added harmonics seem to behave in a very linear, very digital fashion. It also overloads badly, and seems to have a very narrow sweet spot before it does.

one other "free" reverb/delay option people might like is spectral plugins "spacer" thee absolutely fantastic go-to reverb plugin for me, the plugin retailed at $120, but can now be gotten for free from their website, its super easy to use and packs a mountain of versatility, it has separate sections for reverb, convolution reverb, grain reverb, delay, grain delay, and chorus, *each can be moved around in the chain, and come with their own separate e.q.'s... it also comes with haas settings, saturation, width and more.... i also like their other plugins, especially their osc-45 tape emulator.

@Bthelick
@Bthelick 12 күн бұрын
I can't think of a single plugin that covers all of what Valhalla vintage does. It's got lots of algorithms , and those are output through various flavours. To achieve that I would just pick plugins like klanghelm tens jr or vos epicplate2 and then put them through EQ, bit reduction, sample reduction, tape etc to emulate the vibe. But Valhalla vintage is $50 , that's like $2 per algorithm in there! Sean is an Incredible coder and nice guy so I don't have any problems recommending supporting him if you've got the money, I think that price is more than fair and it's a permanent licence.

Not really , I have tried a melodyne style pitch tracking plugin, (well it behaved more like the waves tune), called mx tune (I think) , but the interface was terrible and the results were unreliable. What melodyne achieves is not trivial to code, the only competitor imo is cubase's internal one by Yamaha , We've only just got good real-time efforts for free , i wouldn't expect a free alternative any time soon. Melodyne is well worth the money if you need that much control

How do plugin vendors offering good free VSTs and FXs stay in business? In your opinion.
@altseason_musik
@altseason_musik 2 ай бұрын
It is called tiered selling, they acquire more customers by doing so...they know for example that there is a market for let´s say a VST "Random Name" that can sell for 1000 customers for 79 dollars. The idea is to make a "restricted" product for free for those not able (or wanting) to pay and the full product is the money maker. Giving a part of a VST for free is also a marketing stunt to attract more potential buyers and is good for branding recognition (arturia for example does this very good). ONe other point is that many of the companies are actually some developers who have no actual sctrucure and do all of the company´s chores by themselves (aka SOLO developers)

You are a legend! I often hear a lot of hype about 'Rvox' by Waves - I may have missed it in the video but is there an alternative for that one that you know of please?
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 2 ай бұрын
Yes just use the klanghelm mjucjr . The only difference is instead of 1 parameter you have to adjust 2.

I've never used Rvox, but as I understand it, it's "equivalent" to running your sound through a 1176 as a fast limiter (to cut cff the highest peaks) followed an LA2 for slower more transparent compression. There are various free alternatives to those famous devices that you probably already own. Analog Obsession's Comper allows you to run two different types of compressor in series, but a lot of the AO stuff aliases badly, even when you switch the oversampling on. I'd rather combine something by TDR (e.g. Molotok + Kotelnikov), Melda, or VoS, as the oversampling functions actually work in those company's compressors.

Well I have used it, for many years and its not that complicated, or special. in fact the big thing about Rvox is it's just really 1 slider. Its doing threshold, ratio, some timing and makeup on 1 knob basically. so it was good for getting results fast. I think you (or whoever told you that) is confusing 2 stage release with 2 seperate compressors in series. the sound wasn't anything special, and the make up gain was let's say optimistic! because of course compression HAS to make sounds louder or its not worth it right? 🤣. The MjucJr I show here (in fast mode) is easily a match for it. It just requires you set 2 knobs instead of 1, but that's a good thing because matching level by ear is the only way to judge sound. comper by AO is fine if you want to spend a long time setting up a compressor. the other problem with AO is the 'analog' bit, those linear harmonics aren't very pleasing to the ears, and certainly not analog behaving.

@@MrDisrupta I use it to position instruments on each channel in the mix and make them all stand out and sound less muddy against each other. Basically as low effort EQ or comb filtering but it sounds more natural.

I just rushed and bought the UAD producer pack for 86 euro which I thought it was a balanced bundle ( at least for items that I didnt have). But I got frustated with the ilok thing. If I had realised beforehand that needed Ilok I would have never purchase it.

I have $8000 of UAD and I can't access 85% of it now without buying new hardware as most of what I bought never got covered to native still. Never again.

I prefer the interface of ConvologyXT, but the Melda one is good too. Even more useful for my purposes is Wave Alchemy's Magic 7, which uses loads of IRs from the (incredibly expensive) Bricasti M7 hardware, and wraps them in a nice interface. It was recently voted best free plugin of the year.
