One thing that stands out to me about Jordan and only adds to his "inarguable" designation as GOAT is @ 1:23 after being blocked on the other end, he hustles back down on defense and gets the rebound and is trying to call a TO. He's not on the other end pouting, he's fighting, giving all he has, trying to win until the last tenth of a second has run off. That right there separates him from almost every other superstar in history not named Larry Bird.

As a kid who read box scores on the 80s to keep track of the NBA, I remember seeing the numbers Bernard King put up and often double-checking becuase they didn’t seem possible. This man would throw up 40 pts the way some guys get 15. He was feared universally and basically as unstoppable as anyone I ever saw. I only saw him a couple times a year cuz I was on the West Coast and we didn’t have the coverage you have now, but BK was like a feared urban legend and god help you if he came to play your team because he would torch them and there wasn’t a fuckin’ thing your best defender could do about it. Not. A. Damn. Thing.

Absolute true story. Every legend from that era says the same thing. You couldn’t stop that baseline shot. Ever. You either backed off and took the chance, or fouled him. He would have whole starting lineups in foul trouble. And you’re right about the 40. He would get his 40 off like 60% or more shooting. Not the same that you would typically see Kobe or AI get it. They shot a lot more. This guy had back to back 50 point games off 70% shooting between the two games!

His now ex wife was my teacher in middle school. I remember he used to come and visit her during school and I remember how incredibly tall he was. I remember seeing him in town when I worked at a part time job when I was in high school. He was walking in the super market and one of my high school friend was so excited that Bernard king was there. He ran up to me to say Bernard king is shopping in the supermarket!!! As soon as I turned around and saw Bernard king we recognized each other and he said (“ we go way back with a smile “) he was definitely a scoring machine in his day, definitely unstoppable with a ball in his hand.

King has one of the highest offensive IQs of all time. His game was based on mathematical equations that he would devise for each scenario. He based every possession off the defense played on him. He basically created his own grid for the court. He had a set of moves designed for each section of the court, and then a counter move for every type of defensive plays. It’s insane to hear him go into detail about it.

Yup. Bernard King came back and the Knicks took a pass on him so he vowed to become an all star again; a tall order back then because athletes just didn't come back the same after an ACL surgery. There's NBA fans and there's NBA historians, if you watch the game because of Jordan you're a fan. Or if you pronounce Chicago with a hard ch. I'm from Chicago and that really annoys me. I heard of BK... But don't think one great scoring night against the Bulls necessarily qualifies. He never put up the consistent numbers that Jordan managed and that sorta disqualifies him for such accolades. Was he good? Undoubtedly yes. Was he the underrated Michael...... BK is one of the top skilled scoring machines of all time. He was my Jordan before Jordan. He would score 30-40-50 at will with incredible shooting accuracy with his moves and turns. When I saw King blow out his knee live on tv I was devastated. We missed out on a sick career because of it because he was never the same and had horrible mishaps coming back from the injury. This was an old, post-injury version of BK here.

The only problem with this video is that is that Jordan guarded on several shot attempts on the floor not exclusively as they rotated defenders on king. Also, we did not see king guarding MJ one on one at all. The title should read Bernard king destroys the bulls. It’s should also be noted that Bernard king was never known for his defense. Hence him never being selected to the all defensive first team or all defensive team. He is was more James harden like then like MJ. And if anyone really knows basketball it’s easier to score when you only use your energy on one side of the ball/offensive side.

Correction - Bernard injured his knee at the end of the '84-85 season (game 55), the same season in which he was the NBA's leading scorer. He had not suffered any major injuries prior to that, but missed the bulk of the '79-80 season in alcohol rehab.

I am from Chicago and I got to see the Legend MJ while in Grad School in North Carolina, and while playing for my Bulls. I know of 2 players, and I am sure there is morebut I am talking about consistently who gave Mike that work, one of them is Bernard King, and the other is Ron Harper before he fucked his knees up. As a matter of fact with Harper, in some circles he was considered a better player he could do it all. Because King was still a very prolific scorer even after the surgery. He would've been the first option on offense which would open the paint for Ewing since Bernard was almost always being double teamed..

Growing up in NY I got to see LT, Dr. K, Strawberry, but my greatest joy was Bernard King. On free tv you got to see him every night dump 40-50 points on Bird's Celtics, all of the Pistons (Isaih, Laimbeer, Mahorn, Dantley, Maguire), Dr. J, anybody that came to the garden knew most likely Bernard would drop at least 40. Dude that was Bernie's second career. He made the greatest comeback in NBA history from a career ending knee injury. King was scoring 50's before Jordan was in college. This was before arthroscopic surgery was a thing. A torn acl wasn't a routine injury to recover from back then. Bernard went through some Bobby Orr shit. Benard King took Grant Pippen and Jordan to the woodshed after giving them 44pt 8 reb and 6 assists at the age of 34 after sitting out two years from a knee injury. He one time lead the NBA in scoring, Jordan could never stop him. If it had not been for his two major knee injuries and remember medical procedures weren't as good in the 80's and early 90's and they are now. He would have been a better score than Jordan without the 3pt shot. King had back to back 50 games and shot 69% from the field. Only Wilt and another player not Jordan ever did that. King destroyed Jordan and Pippen in their prime time. He was a better effecient scorer than Jordan!

Bernard King averaged 55 games per season over 16 seasons. Two of his seasons his ppg fly off the chart, although a closer look at usage rate shows why. For the most part, his teams weren't that good. Some of the time King's defense (smart stats, not personal eye test) wasn't that good. However, he had several years were he did contribute on both ends of the court. One of the most notable things about King was that he started playing before the 3 was even legal. Back when he started average teams were probably shooting around 44-45%, and that because of their centers shooting closer to 50%. Bernard King was a tad light on FTAs per FGAs (didn't drive as much as other high scoring superstars) but was one of the best mid-range shooters to ever play the game with overall shooting percentages routinely at or over 55%. Loved seeing his stroke in this game. Can't imagine how much better his shot would be today when you can't lay much of a hand on someone.

One of the best Shooting Guards to ever laced them up . Not surprising he gave MJ trouble and ever one else for that matter. He was a very smart crafty player . He could come at you some many different ways. It was over when he got you on the low post . Even after that ACL injury he was successful. He did that because of his skill set. He was never very athletic, but he could beat you with skill and being crafty. I believe MJ incorporated a little bit of that in his game later in his career after he lost his athleticism.
