That double heel surgery changed Bird's mobility and drives, in 1989-90 season he wasn't the offensive juggernaut he was in 1984-1985 through 1987-88 season. Look at his 87-88 season, then at his 89-90 season. Scottie, as I recall those matches after the heels surgery couldn't guard the post too well against Bird. If Larry got it in the post, he usually prevailed. Now if Larry was mobile like prior to the double-heel surgery (and or at least prior to his back injury after the 89-90 season), he would have done even better. Props to Scottie though - very good player, all star, champion.

Shout out to Gasol in the beginning. Prime Bird's offense vs prime Pippen's defense would've been legendary battles. You're not stopping Bird you have to wear him down, meanwhile you have to constantly watch Pippen on the break.

This is when Larry started getting his back worked on while he was off the court. He even laid on the floor between stints. It’s amazing he was still as good as he was. All that diving on the floor came back to haunt him. Always wished you could see the best play longer against each other. No doubt the 80’s basketball was the best tho. 3 pointers are great but backing down the defender, hard defense, hating your opponent when the whistle blew, that’s all missing these days.

With the best of players it's not about stopping them from getting their points, but making them work real hard to get them. Make them work to get their shot, make them work on defense. Can you imagine how many rebounds he would have as a power forward? No one, absolutely no one could ever stop him as a small ball center and of course he already is the greatest small forward of all time. He would most likely average a huge triple double for his career in the soft as jello league of today.

@Inbrightestday 87 I disagree and Scotty would give some players room to disrupt a teams offence / get in passing lanes etc. It could be that these average players had better games for a reason, and that reason is they were the players that opposition would prefer to be taking the shots. That way Pip could move around and help out on other better scoring players.

Yes, some of those later games are really painful to watch as it’s obvious Larry is hurting badly and not himself on the court anymore… I think this makes a great argument that if Larry and the Celtics of the 80s could have stayed healthy longer, the Bulls would not have ruled the 90’s like they did… maybe last half they would have… I’ve always liked Pippen, but Larry was the GOAT in my opinion… very interesting matchup!!! ❤️

I feel like in many ways this was the case for a number of players and teams back then. The game was far more physical than today and a lot of people paid the price, and obviously Bird and Jordan both come to mind. I often think Kareem played as long as he did as healthy as he did thanks to the sky hook. He rarely took the hard foul going for the hard drive, by comparison. Plus, everyone played a lot more minutes than is common today. How many seasons did Bird and Jordan play 80+ games? Almost all of them.

He could have gotten it done with Ewing. Or Magic. Or even Barkley. Doc had Moses, Kareem had Magic, Bird had McHale, Hakeem had Drexler, etc, etc). Every great player needs another great player (or two hand-picked players, in Lebron's case) to get that ring. Bird was an MVP, won two Championships, was scoring in the 20s, rebounding over 10/gm, 5-6 assists/gm, had 2stl/gm and 1 blk/gm within his first five seasons. What was Pippen's excuse by the end of his fifth season for not being nearly as good as an old, oft injured Bird? Undeveloped? The fact is, league got weaker and Pippen didn't. That's why Pippen's numbers went up. Pippen was never anywhere near Bird's level of play when Bird was in his peak years.

10 Reasons why Pippen is a Top 10 Player in NBA History: 1. Chuck Daley said Pippen was the best player on the 92 Dream Team 2. Pippen statistically was the best on the 96 Dream Team 3. Pippen won All Star MVP in 94 when the games were competitive 4. After Jordan left in 93 the Bulls only had 2 less wins than the 93 with Jordan, and would've actually won more games had Pippen not been out the first 10 games of the season. 5. Without Jordan, the only people who could stop Pippen from winning a championship in 94 and 2000 were the refs 6. Jordan never won a ring without Pippen 7. Pippen was 1 of a few players in history to get 200+ steals / 100+ blocks in the same season 8. Pippen was 1 of a few players in history to lead his team in each of the 5 major stats in a season 9. In 96-97 season Rodman was out almost half the season, yet the Bulls still won 69 games 10. In 97-98 season Pippen was out almost half the season, and the Bulls struggled during that time.

An aging Bird was 6-0 vs Jordan with or without Pippen in the playoffs, and hit a game winner in both their faces. Jordan knows who the GOAT was. Bird could have easily won the league MVP in 88 when Jordan won, he lost a year due to achilies. He was a beast as a rookie, completely turned Boston around in his rookie year. Rook of the year, and 1st team NBA as a rookie. Prime Bird was the best basketball player in history. Just ask Magic, Kareem, Barkley, Russell, Aurbach, Walton, Dominique, Dr. J, Ewing, Miller, McHale, LeBron, Buckner, Rodman, Isiah. The list goes on and they've all said it. He would absolutely decimate today's league with the rules the way they are.

Bird's rookie year, his team won 32 more games for a league best 61-21 record. Pippen is 66th on the Overall Defensive Rating--Bird is 61st. Bird won a title in 1981 without Ainge, DJ, and Walton, with a non-starting rookie McHale (10ppg in 20 min)--his 2nd year. No one averaged over 19 points except Bird on that team. Bird went 17-11 against Chicago with Jordan and 6-0 in playoffs. Pippen made Chicago much competitive against Boston and showed them how to finish over .500.

Bird, for his career, went 17-11 against Jordan's Bulls in the regular season and 6-0 in the playoffs--two first round best-of-five sweeps. Pippen was not on those swept teams and never got to face Bird in playoffs. By the time Chicago went to and won an ECF, Bird was injury and surgery riddled going into his final season in 91-92. They mentioned Scottie was one of the greatest defenders of all-time. He ranks 66th in Overall Defensive Rating all-time--exceptional, and with Jordan at 110th. Failed to mention Bird is ranked 61st on that list, though, so by the numbers, Bird was a slightly better defender. Bird averaged 1.8 stls and 0.8 blks/game for a career at small forward and was one of the best team defenders. He was always in the right space and broke up more 2-on-1s and 3-on-1s than anyone I ever saw, and he made clutch defensive plays in big moments. Give Bird respect--he is both Legend and GOAT, and he won a title without a Robin and hall-of-fame coach and 7 years of team-building. No Ainge, no DJ, no Walton, and a rookie McHale who wasn't a starter (10pts/game in 20 minutes) when they won in 1981, Bird's 2nd year. Just a team who went from 29-53 to a league-best 61-21 Bird's rookie year (record +32 win turnaround) and a title in year two--without a 19 point/game teammate. When Pippen arrived, the Bulls got good--prior to that, they couldn't win more than 40 games, but they won 50 Pippen's rookie year. If I could play with Jordan or Pippen, I would play with Pippen in a heartbeat--better defender, unselfish, great teammate, and wins within the framework of the team. He didn't demand FGA to go for 30 with the offense centered around him and losing year after year after year like Mike did his first 3 seasons (1985 W/L 38-44, 1986 30-52, 1987 40-42). No, Pippen played winning ball like Bird. Bird led the team in points, rebounds, and was 2nd in assists in that '81 championship season. Bird also took Indiana State, who had never even made the NCAA tournament in school history, to a 33-0 record into the title game with not a lot of help--certainly no James Worthy on that team. He averaged 31-13-5 in college--there weren't a lot of assists to be had with that group and he earned every one. Once you learn about and see the LEGEND of Bird's game-- the stories, the trash talk, the dominating through injuries, the all-around genius (only 24-10-6 player ever for a career), clutch moments, full-court inbounds passes, the offensive rebound with the assist built-in, the fights, the absurd stat lines (32-10-10-9 in 31 minutes near quadruple double), the 2nd winningest player in NBA history to Magic's loaded Lakers, etc., you can see Bird is different from everyone else. Pippen and Jordan are both all-time great, but Bird really is in a class of his own. Hopefully KZbin doesn't line out this post--they don't like when I speak truth and stats sometimes--almost like they don't want direct comparisons of players. The numbers don't lie and neither do I and I saw it with my eye, youtube.

Chicago Bulls were a pushover team even with Jordan in the playoffs in the 80’s. Milwaukee, Detroit, Boston, Cleveland were all way better as teams. Chicago had to basically climb the ladder to become the Champions they deserved to become. Because of those teams Chicago became a great team -a team that could beat a prime Lakers team. Dennis Rodman (Pistons) is correct in that they beat the hell out of the Bulls and Michael. They do not hide that at all, -and they enjoyed beating the Bulls and frustrating Michael Jordan.
