It surprises me that this song isn't covered as much as Browned eyed Girl, Gloria, Honkytonk Women, Miss You. & Play that Funky Music White Boy. This was a quintessential foot tapping your way to the dance floor song. Ya can't help yourself. It drags you outta your funk if ya had one, or not. It was pretty easy to cover & that repetative hook cut thru your mood like a mantra with a marching beat. A pop-rock masterpiece.

One of my absolute favorites. This came out in 1974 and me and my cousins were rocking this on the radio in a tent in their parents back yard. Great memories and after all these years this song is still a total banger.

The baby boomers are hard workers but they also like to takethings easy sometimes. My father as a school principal supervised a lot of teachers born from this era. Randy Bachman was inspired by Paperback Writer and dubbed his own creation "White Collar Worker". The Guess Who, the band he was with at the time, passed on it, and it eventually morphed into Taking Care of Business after he heard a Vancouver DJ, on the radio, say he was "taking care of business" (after he departed the Guess Who). He changed the title, adjusted the lyrics and that night, played it live for the first time at a bar before BTO made it big. They made music that was hard to sit still to. I keep on requesting Blue Collar, and will do so again. It's a far cry from what most people know BTO as...Bachman shows his jazz chops. It's brilliant, their masterpiece imo. Not their signature song, but far, far more interesting and evocative than their hits, which I also love.
@JimRobinson-colors
@JimRobinson-colors 2 жыл бұрын
Don't hear Paperback writer in this at all. What I do hear and know is true is Bob Seger's "Ramblin Gamblin Man" you can literally sing the song over it. I think I have heard Randy mention Paperback Writer but that makes no sense to me.

When this came out, you could really hear car engines and there was something similar between the car engine sounds and BTO's guitar riffs. I learned not to listen to BTO when I was driving, because I would end up syncing the car engine sound with the song and end up driving much faster than I had any business driving.

Elvis wore a pendant with the initials TCB and a lightening bolt going through it. He said it stood for the name he gave his band when he started touring when he got out of the army. The name of the band, you guessed it, Taking Care of Business. This a great song!
@John_Chu
@John_Chu 2 жыл бұрын
Bachman didn't take the title from Elvis' use of the phrase. He was driving into Vancouver one night when he was struck by radio DJ Daryl B's signature catch phrase "We're Takin' Care of Business." He inserted that phrase into a song he had written during his Guess Who days called "White Collar Worker," that Burton Cummings had rejected because the chorus sounded exactly like The Beatles' "We Can Work It Out." Bachman changed the chords and inserted the new title phrase and the rest is history.

The piano player was actually just a pizza delivery guy, who was delivering to Steve Miller in the studio next door. He went to the wrong door, (BTO’s) and commented “it needs piano” after hearing a version of TCB. He asked for a shot at it, as he was a pianist. Randy Bachman said “why not”? The next day the head of the label came in, heard the version of TCB with piano, and loved it. BTO didn’t even know the guys name. The had to call around to pizza shops to find him. The rest is history.

Norman Durkee: Pianist, composer, advertising jingle writer and musical director for cabaret theater Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle. Worked at the Kaye-Smith Studios, where one night he was spontaneously recruited to play on Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s megahit, “Takin’ Care of Business.” (Mr. Durkee was not delivering pizza, as urban legend has it.) Randy Bachman keeps the fable alive though.
