In a world where Kpop is belittled with the argument that fans are only interested in the looks of the idols rather than the music, I think it's really important that we don't see a single member throughout this video. The value of art and music isn't dependent upon how the artists look.

Besides all the theories about this piece of art, I primarily think they're triggering the Grammys. You know that boy bands are openly ignored by the Grammys over the years no matter how big and successful they are. So BTS are trying to put their music on a whole new level, beyond mass pop and kpop genre, if you know what i mean... Like David said, it's pretty experimental. Hell yeah, that's the right word. Experimental, artistic, elitist is what Grammys appraise nomination and win worthy.

At the end it seemed like the “swan” is trying to swim up, but is being held my the black figures, or in other words “the shadows”. Throughout the whole vid I got a sense of being copied and stuck to, like how shadows copy movements made and stuck to the “swan” no matter what it did. Also it seemed like whenever “the swan” tried to leave it got pulled back in by the shadows. 🤔 so shadows are holding “the swan” back from anything it wants to do. And for the song seemed liked it was the shadows making mockery to “the swan” by telling it basically do ur thing but I’ll be right here still. Whether that’s a comforting “I’ll be right here” or negative, it’s all still very creepy. Kudos to BTS for this amazing song and the MN dancers for bringing it to life. It was ultimately very poetic and has me on my toes for whatever drops next🙌🙌

This song and performance actually spoke to me a lot. As an artist who's losing love for their craft as life goes by and it force you to work on projects that you are not passionate in but need to in order to support yourself. Also living in a country with limited freedom of speech and expression just kill me inside daily. A struggling main dancer that try to fly in a dark and abandoned broken surrounding, plus the suffocating and dying feeling from the lyrics. The black suite dancers that act like obstacles and negativities trying to hold the main dancer back and put him into a box. But in the end the main dancer fight back and eventually use those darkness to help propel him to fly again just like how artists use their life experiences and struggling to inspire their works. This is how I interpret this performance. It does help sooth me and inspire me more after watching and listen to BTS 'Black Swan'. Thank you so much BTS, MN Dance Company, and Big Hit.
@keishawong21995 жыл бұрын
This spoke to my soul. I'm an actor. I am considered an artist. Any art whether dancing, singing, acting, writing, drawing etc. Is all-consuming. A lot of people do not understand how much you give when you're an artist. It is your identity. It is your whole being. It's your entire life and its tiring. When you act, you have to become a different person and feel and convey real emotions. Do you know how hard that is? There's a reason why we're called suffering artists. It's because any type of art can be very mentally damaging. Acting comes with the risk that you may lose yourself in the sea of the characters you wear. If you don't ground yourself, you'll lose yourself. Artists give their entire being to their art. They regularly pluck pieces of their soul and showcase it to the world to see and judge. And a lot of the time, the art they make gets criticized. Their SOUL gets critiqued. Art can be dangerous for the soul, but it can also heal the world. A candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. With artists such as dancers or groups like BTS, sometimes they are forced to stop doing what they're passionate about due to the body not being physically able to move like it once did. Dancers, in particular, know that their career is a short-lived one. The body is not built for dance and a lot of dancers are forced into early retirement. Many other artists, after being hurt by people rejecting their art, oftentimes, give up their passion. They lose it. But this song and their message of not letting that passion flicker out and die are so powerful. Because an artist's passion is their life, and to lose it is worse than death because you get no peace.

David, thank you for your honest reaction. My personal background gave me a lot of deep connections to this film. I was a dancer for just 10 years... not professionally, but as a personal passion. Dance is not easy. It requires focus, hard work, hours of practice, soreness, bruises... but the thing it takes the most is emotional energy to express your deepest spirit as movement. I thought quitting dance was the "right thing to do" for my life at the time, but as soon as I quit dancing, my health deteriorated. Now, my health is at a point when I can no longer dance. Martha Graham is like a mother of contemporary dance. Her quote at the beginning set up my response to the film. As I watched Black Swan, I realized what was happening, "His wings are his dance..." and I began to sob. Art is not just a creative hobby. It is a laborious gestation and birthing. I can only imagine the pain each of our 7 has experienced, realizing that what gave them wings-the beautiful black wings they once longed for as ducklings-would become a burden they wanted to cut off. To me, this film expresses the torture of the craft, and their realization that they must learn to fly without their wings. P.S. i know you didn't mean anything by it, but I just wanted to inform you of a couple tips regarding language. To call this group a dance team is not correct. A dance team could be a great, accomplished or hardworking group... but a Dance Company in the dance world means an institution with the utmost experience, expertise, training, rigor, and distinguished dancers. People audition to join Dance Companies, and it is their whole life's work.

Fun fact: "black swan event" is a term for something that occurs unexpectedly or is beyond expectation to the point of causing major change or upheaval. The reason is that way back in the 2nd century, the phrase "black swan" became a metaphor for an impossible thing, since black swans didn't exist. At least they did not exist in ancient Rome where that metaphor originated. But black swans do exist, and in the late 1600's some European dude saw one in Australia, which blew everyone's mind. That phrase obviously became obsolete. Because of this, someone later coined the phrase "black swan event" to mean what it does today. Think about it. “Black swan” was a very popular metaphor in music and art for 1600 years. That guy in the 100’s could have picked ANY color other than white for his metaphor to describe the impossible. If he had said “green swan” or striped swan or whatever in his poem we would still be using that phrase to talk about something impossible. But he picked “black swan”, the only other color of swan that actually does exist. Crazy! BTS is a sort of black swan appearing to shock the western music industry, don't you think? K-pop has been around for a long time, totally unknown to say, Grammy voters. But now they will know, and it will change everything.

This could open other doors for BTS. I thought it was beautiful. Yes Jimin could have pulled this off.

I feel that the artistry for this is so high for the common Korean audience.

I felt the same way about the MN video and the Spotify version. Confused then exhilarated and acceptance of both version.

David we need a explain for the lyrics. It is very poetic, we need a native explanation not only a translation

BTS left the interpretation to us again. Mine is simple, if an individual's passion dies, he dies together with it. It's all up to him if he'll pursue or let the unfavorable odds take over.

Hello David, I hope you're fine! In my opinion when I saw the video I thought it was really amazing how the dancers in black represent the swan's wings (that I interpret as his inspiration/passion to reach higher skies). Then those same wings that helped him fly higher are the same ones pulling him down (perhaps due to rutine, due to fear or darker emotions playing along to keep the swan tied down). Then there is a point when the swan fights back and can release himself form the black wings, thus freeing himself from the fears, bad feelings, dark emotions, etc and he thinks that he can finally reach other horizons but... in the end the wings come back, because he is a black swan so the new wings are also black and he finally understand that those feelings, emotions and black wings are part of who he is and he finally accepts them (the part when all the dancers in black sort of return their original position, hugging the swan and becoming a part of him again). Finally those wings are helping him again to fly and go higher with the understanding that they are one, the swan and the wings, but accepting this has made the swan enjoy flying again and keep going his "thang". I just wanted to express my thoughts on the matter and perhaps you can tell us your interpretations. Thanks and see you on your next video!

This video hit home for me. I did not expect an existential crisis before breakfast. 😂 Anywho... If a dancer/athlete had a career ending injury or change of living circumstances, I feel like that crashing loss of self worth and purpose that follows is personified in this (especially with the inclusion of modern dancers telling the story through choreography). I agree that the approach in this version is more niche, but I don’t think that is on accident... knowing if a person can appreciate art for the sake of art, or just blindly support a song with BTS and their faces on the cover of it because the person is not willing to look beyond the exterior/cover. Basically a way to identify who cares and supports them for who they are versus the image they have made for the masses. Just my interpretation for why BTS would have an alternate sounding version for tracks dealing with heavier themes or emotional baggage pertaining to the artists themselves more personally. I’m really excited to see the remaining tracks with this Connect project and what differences they will have with each other, along with similarities. P.S. I get some serious Stravinsky vibes out of this. Rite of Spring is standing out in my mind, same for some Tchaikovsky... Also, I need a BTS x Lindsey Sterling collaboration now. Seriously, after Artemis (her recent album) I feel like a classical crossover to modern pop needs to hit the world stage and I think that would be an epic collab in general. ✌🏻💜

they actually said to us, look and listen our music, not just our visual thats the shortest mean i get first and also they shared what they afraid as artist, not about their popularity or fans, but afraid to lost their love for music they stand so much theyre truly artist, who dedicated themselves for their music to share and deliver their feeling with other people so i hope more people respect them as artist, not just object (for clout or money)specially when people comment, they need to replace with more fresh face really thank you for your video and yes im waiting their live stage performance for this song

I enjoyed the dance itself but especially the orchestral version of this beautiful song. I’m commenting to this after seeing the BTS version but ai did see the art dance first. I still like both. Thank you for your videos. I appreciate how your fluency in both English and Korean help us gain a unique perspective of the performances. 👍

People have been making the claim that BTS transcends kpop for some time now, and this is the first time I feel they truly have. All their previous songs, while wonderful in and of themselves, still, to me, fell under the auspices of the kpop genre. While BTS has been the epitome of what kpop could achieve, they were still kpop to me. But this song has completely evolved them in my opinion. They have definitely broken through that kpop glass ceiling and have become something more encompassing than mere music. They've taken their artistry to a new level of possibility and accessibility, and have managed to update and contemporize music entertainment. For me, they are no longer musicians, they are truly artists. This is the moment they've proved that.
