Cypher Part 1 was released when BTS was just starting. They were really, really young (20,21y/o). This is how answered to the criticisms from other rapper saying they were sellouts because they decided to go not only mainstream but even joined a boyband. Then they released 1 Cypher in every album following. There is a live performance of the Cypher medley here on KZbin, not HD, but you can watch it good enough since it's the live performance that is important.

So basically! Suga and RM were underground rappers before joining BTS. In korea, kpop is an industry and the artists have no Creative rights with their Music and as soon as a rapper joins a kpop group, they‘ll be called an „Idol rapper.“ That Term is often used to look down on rappers because they entered an industry where they dance, get makeup done for Stage etc. kpop is all about Reputation and Image so there is no Smoking, not much drinking, you just can’t do that and Some ignorant rappers think, Thats a reason that makes them fake rappers. It’s just used to mock them tbh. So in most of The cyphers, they keep mentioning being called „idol rapper“ aka. Not real rappers. Just so u know: BTS is not like a typical kpop Group because they write all their Music themselves! RM (formerly Rap Monster): the line asking "who's your top 5?" were all his nicknames. His underground rap name was Runch Randa, and from there his fans nicknamed him Rap Monster. J-Hope was saying that jealousy is bad for your health, makes you sick. "If you're jealous, go to the hospital, two weeks to heal." Suga: "We are Bulletproof is a big hit." The first is their song, and Big Hit is their company/label, which started from nothing just like BTS did. "I'm the Chopin of the beat" is wordplay, referring to chopping the beat and also *Chopin* was a composer of classical music in the 1800s. Suga plays the piano too. The BTS rappers were being looked down on and dissed by underground rappers, while some of them were just jealous.

You won’t get a lot of the references in the Cyphers because you don’t know the history of BTS, they were written for one rapper in particular who disrespected RM and Suga and told them they had turned their back on hip hop. Both RM and Suga very young at the time and were under ground rappers before joining BTS. They wrote Cyphers 1-4 about him and have now put it all behind them. However ARMY (the fanbase) is so strong now that anyone disrespecting BTS will get the full measure of ARMY’s displeasure. When you do the other Cyphers please run through it first and then stop and read the lyrics after, it will flow much better that way.

Their talking to the industry, other rappers, the haters. RM and Suga got a lot slack for leaving the underground and basically going commercial by becoming idol. In korea kpop rappers aren considered actual rappers by korean rappers. Honestly for the most part a lot arent, but RM and Suga and J hope are some of the best. They have made their mistakes but have also made efforts to learn more about the culture. The whole group pretty much had a crash course in learning about HH on a show they did called American Hustle life and they were mentored by Warren G and Coolio. It honestly helped make them even better artist. RM has calmed down a lot, I mean he still snaps he just a lyricist so hes smooth it lol

this is just the rap line of bts. the cyphers get better with time in my opinion. in the series they respond to their haters, mostly a korean underground rapper called b-free. rm (used to be rap monster but changed it 2 years ago)(namjoon) and suga (yoongi) we’re underground rappers before joining bts and b-free always criticized them for “giving into temptation” of the idol life and for wearing makeup on stage. many people in korea dont consider idol rappers as “real rappers”. j-hope (hoseok) only started rapping after joining bts. if you wanna check out RM individually, you can check out his mixtape RM from 2015 which has a lot harder hip-hop. or he released a mix-tape last year called mono thats really chill. or for their last comeback he had a solo song called persona.

I'd advise you to listen to the song and read the translations then also watch the live performance straight after. You just feel it differently and get a whole new appreciation of the song.

I recommend you checking out their most recent solos from the Love Yourself era: RM - Trivia: Love Jin - Epiphany Suga - Trivia: Seesaw Jhope - Trivia: Just Dance Jimin - Serendipity V - Singularity Jungkook - Euphoria The trivias don't have music videos but the other 4 solos have MVs since they were the intros of all the different Love Yourself era albums (3 albums in total). It'd be nice if you could watch listen to all the songs in one video since they bounce off eachother rlly well but you could also split them into 4 and 3. Thank you again!!

You are starting with their hip hop content but note BTS and the individual members are very versatile and they are not confined to one genre. The cyphers are diss tracks to their haters. Specially RM and Suga, who were underground rappers before joining BTS, received a lot of criticism for moving up in the industry. Cypher 1 is for Korean underground hip hop, pt 2 is for a specific rapper, pt 3 is hip hop people again, pt 4 is for ALL the haters which increased a lot in those few years as BTS became successful. Then MIC Drop is like the unofficial last cypher. Then we have Ddaeng (genius wordplay, you have to watch the “explained by a Korean” video to help you understand it. Then you can check out Hip hop lover, Outro: Tear, We on, intro: what am I to you, intro: nevermind, etc. Don’t forget to check out the mixtapes: Agust D by Agust D RM by Rap Monster (he changed his name to RM in 2017) Mono by RM HOPE WORLD by J-Hope
