To me, simply put, his persona is the one on the stage and his shadow is the one in the crowd. No one is paying attention to his shadow, the real one behind the scenes even though he's right there among them yelling how much he wants to be himself. Everyone has their attention on Suga, his Persona. Notice they're all also watching him through the lens of their cameras. They only see what they want to see, and the more they pay attention to Suga, the more Yoongi fades away or gets lost into the shadows. RM's intro Persona also said the same thing when he spoke about his name being R, the attention on RM is so much that Namjoon does not think people would care to know him. So, he accepts RM as his identity even though he knows Kim Namjoon wants to be heard as well.

Guys this song is allot more introspective than what you’ve perceived by Suga’s journey to the top. Suga meets his shadow one he gets there and comes to an understanding with his shadow that they are one as he grapples with the fear that comes with this fame and success. The final flow switch at the end is from his shadow’s perspective that’s why it’s so chaotic.

I hate leaving negative comments, and this is actually my first: How long have you been watching BTS for clout and yet you still haven't learnt to use the captions on the music videos? Such a shame that you missed the whole point of this track. While I appreciate that you're hyped and like the track overall, there's a huge disconnect between your reaction and the music. I had a little faith if your interest for BTS when you guys made the effort to research the Wings album, but it was short-lived so I gave up watching you guys. I thought I'd watch this and give you benefit of doubt and ended up disappointed. For so long ARMY have always reminded you about the English subs on official content and I see plenty of ARMY commenting useful info underneath your vids to HELP YOU because they want you to enjoy this experience to your fullest. This shows that you only use BTS when it suits you and you don't make an effort to read the comments and learn. Thanks for reacting to Interlude_Shadow though there's actually more depth on its meaning. SUGA isn't telling anyone he's the best but rather talking about the anxiety of being at the top. That at the end of the day they get lonely, they feel alone and that he's scared of the fame but at the same time telling himself - It's what he wanted. SHADOW is the behind the scene, behind the spotlight. This is rather an emotional rap tbh. SUGA produced this song too! He's so consistent! Kudos to our Genius MinPD! 💜

Hannah Ali it’s not mostly about Sasaengs. In fact that’s not really what the song is talking about at all. He’s talking about the struggles of the fame. The higher you go the more you struggle. The more you feel alone and the dark feelings well up. His persona becomes the main focus of his personality even tho it’s not the 100% real Min Yoongi, so people don’t see the real him only his famous idol self. The shadow (his deep inner self that is suppressed) wants to come out and in order for him to become his true self his shadow and persona need to merge together in harmony. Of course the symbolism in the video shows pressures of fame with all the spotlight including even the fans and the pressure. But sasaengs is not main focus of this song and I would even say it’s a very minor aspect.

this song really fits with what yoongi said in burn the stage youtube red series: “i wanted to succeed and make music, but strangely i never wanted to be famous.” also on their 2018 anniversary he said he was going through troubles and even cried while taking a shower because he was afraid of their fame in a way because at any moment because of any mistake they are at risk of having everything fall apart. the song propels his mentality towards fame and its responsibility that is a shadow that threatens to devour him and causes him to lose himself. the mv also showcases things they go through like people breaking into their hotels or following them to their hotels and touching them and shoving their phones in their faces without care.

I think people are missing the message. If you read the lyrics now and try to understand what he’s really saying in this song. I feel like ”Suga” is talking to the real himself ”Min Yoongi” and the strugle and balance between shining like Suga from BTS, or the rapper August D. and also the true himself, Min Yoongi. PLEASE read the lyrics. This video may start off looking dark but it’s really not. Suga is singing about all his dreams from the past of wanting it all to be on top, his SHADOW represents his past, his fears, he said the more the spotlight is on him, his shadow gets bigger. He tries to run away from his shadow but they catch up to him. Now that he is on top, he says he’s scared of all the expectations of himself and others have of him. He says don’t let him shine, don’t let him down, don’t let him fly. Even on top, he has these fears of losing himself. He just wants to be his true self. At the end, he embraces his shadow as it will always be a part of him, part of his life now. He is learning to deal with all the spotlight and the fame, but his view is humbling and somber, not in any way bragging or gloating. This is the Suga that we all have come to know and will always love 💜💜💜👏 BTS our humble kings.

It's basically an internal battle between him and his *Shadow* . All the thing he wanted to be originally, he doesn't even want to be anymore. *In the beginning you wanna be all of this stuff, you wanna be rich, you wanna be at the top, and you want it to be all yours. You have this big dream about being the rock star or the rap star and you wonder how far you'll go but when you finally get there you notice that this Shadow follows you everywhere you go. Getting bigger and bigger, so much, that you become afraid to fly higher and then start to realize how lonely it is. People say that there's a splendor to being in the bright lights but your growing Shadow swallows and consumes you and become a monster. You keep going higher making you lose balance and focus within yourself and as you rise higher, you start to hate it and when you get high enough, your Shadow grows in that star light and you start to tend to hate the spot light and don't want to drop but you also don't want to go higher, you just want to be you. You and your shadow will always be one body, although, you'll clash sometimes but you can never break it off, wherever you are, it's you. You are it, and now you know.*

Yoongi’s telling us how fame can really give you everything but at the same time how it can destroy you. It also means that even if you’re at the top its not always a good thing and can be scary too he even says “how lonely it is up there”. The light becomes brighter, but the shadow becomes darker. And the lines where he says “I wanna be rich, I wanna be the top...” and then he says “I wanna be me” he’s telling himself as “suga” that he doesn’t want to lose himself as “Min yoongi” even if they’re getting famous. And the lines “don’t let me shine, don’t let me down, don’t let me fly... Now I’m scared” contradict to what he was saying at the beginning. The fear they’re facing as individual as they get bigger. Also In the beginning where you can see people standing outside the door, running after him symbolises those stalkers or sasaengs who always stalks them wherever they go. And also you can see the people who are holding their phones up with dollars and won are reporters and bad people who always spread false accusations and ruin their image for the sake of money. It’s basically their everyday lives. This hits hards and it’s so sad.
