So many reactors have BTS content, and you can tell they’re into the music, but most times it still feels like they don’t really “get it.” But how quickly you guys dove into the storyline, the theories, the lives, the lyrics - it feels like you also live and breathe music and it’s important to you to really understand the art. You’re one of the few who I’d consider ARMY, and I just wanted to say I appreciate you guys!

In the lyrics RM mentions SKY which is an acronym for prestigious Korean universities: Seoul National University, Korea university, and Yonsei University. This song was basically criticizing the rigid Korean education system where the only thing you’re expected to do is study and get a certain job or you’re not successful. I don’t want to say the school system is necessarily the reason why because I don’t want to assume but Korea has one of the highest (or the highest) suicide rates in the world

N.O - stands for No Offense SKY - stands for Seoul, Korea, and Yonsei universities (the top 3 universities in Korea - the assumption is, if you make it into one of these 3, your future is pretty much assured success) - Korea has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world, especially among young people - teens and young adults - the pressure for working hard/studying hard and that drive for success puts friendships on the backburner - this causes such stress and loneliness in the young people, that they often resort to ending their lives rather than try to persevere through hardships to try to attain a near mythical goal of success and happiness - BTS urges them no, live their own lives, attain happiness NOW, and that success can only be determined by what each individual needs to achieve that happiness, rather than material goals set by others It is not uncommon for a child in school in Korea to spend 18-20 hours a day in school work. They get up early, go to school, then attend mandatory after school studies, go home (sometimes past 10pm), study at home, then sleep. This does not include those students who ALSO work part-time jobs to help their families. Here's a video of a couple Koreans reacting to a video of vlogs taken by Korean and US students - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpzFfJmPpcx5nac. It shows some of the stark differences. This is not to say everything about the Korean education process is bad - there is a level of education there that the US simply can't compare with. The problem is the stress, and finding a solution for that.

Jungkook, Jimin and V went to high school of performing arts, which basically prepare the students for the entertainment industry. Usually students from these schools will further their studies at Universities focused on arts (like the one Jin went to i.e. Konkuk University). So, their teachers probably didn't have issues about their songs. But N.O was not well-received by the general public especially the parents generation (well, the lyrics criticize them too 😉 ).

« N.O. » is about being kids/teens being pressured and forced to study, to care so much about grades and being perfect good students and being successful and having safe careers and making money etc. and how that pressure negatively affects kids/teens. BTS are trying to encourage them to stand up and have their own dreams and pursue those dreams and not focus so much on these things and be forced into someone else’s dream. Here the explanations of some lines : A GOOD HOUSE, A GOOD CAR, WILL THESE THINGS BRING HAPPINESS? IN SEOUL TO THE SKY, WOULD YOUR PARENTS BE HAPPY? money can’t buy your happiness SKY: Acronym for the three big universities in South Korea. “SKY is an acronym used to refer to the three most prestigious universities in South Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University.” RM is asking people think, would having a lot of money and good things and going to a good university make you happy? Or your parents? I WANT TO EAT AND HAVE FUN, I WANT TO TEAR MY UNIFORM J-Hope doesn’t want to just constantly study, he wants to be able to enjoy and be a kid. Due to all the adults' pressure he just wants to toss aside school stuff and have fun and be normal. ADULTS SAY THAT WE HAVE IT SO EASY THEY SAY I'M ON MY WAY TO HAPPINESS THEN HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN MY UNHAPPINESS? THERE'S NO CONVERSATION TOPICS OTHER THAN STUDYING OUTSIDE, THERE ARE SO MANY KIDS LIKE ME, LIVING THE LIFE OF A PUPPET WHO WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY? They are saying when ever we go to school we have to do what ever the grown ups say .We can only talk about school and we are being controlled by adults and they want to know who will stand up to them. Voilà, I hope not to bother you with my explanations but I love to hear you talk and give your opinion on how you feel about the lyrics and visuals, it's like a podcast... I find that you have this thing in common with BTS, that you want to be useful to this world by bringing comfort already through your job which is not easy and you find the time to share with us very constructive opinions that can only contribute to advance humanity... You are very good speakers... Don't forget that we listen to you all over the planet... Love ya

High school students go to school until 10:00 pm . After classes they stay to study for their SATs. To get in to Seoul Unv. , or Sky Unv., you can only miss 2 questions. I saw a video of them giving students at Berkley, and an English professor at Harvard and they were not able to pass. The test is also timed and you have 1 minute for each question on the English part. It was crazy. Also after they leave their study groups at 10pm, they still need to go home and do regular homework. 😱

I don't know if anyone else talked about this, but yes, Korea's education system is very strict. I don't know if this correct, but I did read somewhere that the average high school student in Korea goes to school about 12-14 hours a day. They go to school about 7:00-8:00 in the morning and school ends around 4:00 in the afternoon. However, they have this thing called self-study where most students stick around after school for many hours to get some extra tutoring or studying in afterwards (self-study, I think, is optional). They usually don't get home until late at night. Then, they do their homework, go to bed, and wake up again. As for vacation, I think they only get one month of summer break a year, unlike the U.S. But, like I said, I don't know for sure because I've never been to Korea. That is just what I read somewhere online. But because of this students are able to build up stronger relationships with their classmates and teachers than in the U.S. P.S. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

I realized that I was nodding along to your discussion when you spoke about "you guys have it easier" and mental health. I noticed it with my parents a lot too. As I grew older, I began having discussions with them about mental health because I was active in different clubs that stemmed from that topic. My mom especially couldn't really comprehend how young people suffer from anxiety and depression. We spoke a lot about it and we realized that she was always busy and could not focus on her mental status, none of my parents could. They were always concerned on how to make ends meet, how they were going to feed us, if the money that they have could provide for us and their parents. Your discussion really invoked a lot of thoughts that I had forgotten.

This is my favourite old school BTS song. It's not uncommon for students to be expected to study from 8-9am all the way to 10pm, one way or another, whether that's at regular school, after school study sessions. A lot of them also then go home and continue studying. And they feel the need to do this as they need to achieve otherwise they are classed as failures. I remember watching a "A day in the life of a Korean student" vlog and she went to school at 8, finished at 3/4ish, went straight to a study school until 9pm, that closed, then went to another one until 11pm, went home and did another hours worth of studying. I feel for them so much, the pressure they are under doesn't allow them time to be kids or to even dream, all they know is studying. And I really commend BTS for tackling a subject as big as this. I really do hope one day it changes for the students of Korea.

Another great reaction. 😊 I really enjoy seeing the sincerity in your reactions and the effort you put into understanding the messages of the songs. Plus your stories are too funny. Along the lines of challenging the establishment, I think you’d also like Silver Spoon/Baepsae along with the explanation video, where BTS criticizes the older generation for messing things up for the younger people and then expecting them to do better. There’s no MV, but they do have a great dance practice to the song. 😄

Tryna give us (the listener) a brand new insight about society, social prejudice, politic etc that NO ONE has never said but THEY DID when they only 16-21th at that time. They've been grown up so much.
@RadiantStorm6664 жыл бұрын
It seems you realized it already, but the 2019 MMA performance, their last song Dionysus had that epic dance break. The dance break back track was a remix of this song, that's why we all went extra nuts when the dance break started. I'm sure you realized too that all the solo dances before Dionysus were also remixes of some of their songs throughout their career in chronological order: V had No More Dreams, Jin had Danger, Jimin had I Need U, Suga had Fire, JK had Save Me, and J-Hope had Fake Love. Not to mention also the Boy in Luv throwback. Realize that they have been around for 7 years since their debut, and Boy in Luv and N.O were 6 years ago near the beginning of their career. For them to pull those choreography moves and songs back out after all these years was an awesome nostalgic moment. In the end, that performance was hinting that the album MOTS:7 released early this year would be about their journey, in which that album also had many easter egg references to their past songs, albums, etc.

They make you feel their emotions in their lyrics, singing and performances which is very powerful. What's more, as you have so far witnessed, they have been consistent from the beginning in their mission to speak out about things that truly matters and are meaningfully helpful especially to today's youth like mental health and loving others by loving yourself. In Korea, the big companies will only hire from certain universities. If you make it to the top 3, you pretty much can get hired anywhere, but if you don't... your options for places to work are more limited. There are about 10 universities that are considered "good" and you're out of luck with anything less. That's why their version of the SAT test is such a huge deal because it will literally determine the rest of your life. Very few people are able to reset their lives later like we do all the time in this country because where you finish your schooling determines your options.

The problem with Asian is not just the school system, also the parents. They put alot of pressure onto their kids.
@opparsgangnamstyle91504 жыл бұрын
In my opinion this is the right way to raise kids coz even if they pressure them to do good in school at the end the one who will benefit it the most are still the kids.. Asian parents just wants their kids to have a good future, tbh I also want to raise may daughter this way.

I didn't say is a bad way but I think there should a balance between school and being kids/teenagers. If you show the kid from an early age time management and organizational skills. They will do well.

@@opparsgangnamstyle9150 yes getting a good education is important but it's extreme in South Korea. Students go to school in the morning, then after school to private academies to study more and only come home late at night (12-15h of studying in total). The competition and pressure is so high that SK has the highest suicide rate in the world.

Same in Japan. When I went Japan for a month vacation. First I didn't understand why kids are still in their school uniforms and back packs at 9 at night waiting for trains. Someone told the kids actually on their way to cram schools.

You can also see why with songs like this as some of their first songs that a lot of people didn't like them and were like "who are these kids openly criticizing things" certainly parents wouldn't have liked their kids listening to a song with that message. I don't know first hand but I have heard Koreans say that even young elementary age kids go to study "sessions " into the evening for hours after school.

I didn't know the school system in Haïti was strict. As a person from Paris, i'm not gonna lie, our education system here is sh*t but is definitely not as strict as South Korea. Everything is about competition in there and some parents absolutely want for there children to be in the best universities (the "SKY" mentioned in these lyrics are the letters for these best 3 unis) so they can have the best jobs, in the best companies. (Also, about the "adults think we have it easy", BTS has a song called "Baepsae"(or "Silver spoon") who talks about this topic. You can also find an explained version by DKDK TV) Un salut de Paris 👋🏼😁

I am a Registered Nurse and work with alot of millennials and have so much respect for them. They graduated with tremendous debt. This was not true for my generation. We went to community colleges for relatively little money. Those who got their BSN same thing went to state college at very affordable rates. And the job of being an RN has changed so much. These young nurses became nurses for the same reason we did, but find out it's not a out patient care at all it's about endless documentation and all its about the chart. The stress they face and added responsibilities that increase daily are overwhelming. I see them work so hard to give the best care possible. I bow download to these young nurses everyday. I do not know if I entered healthcare today that I would have stayed or lasted the 37 years I have. Not for one minute do I believe the younger generation has it easy at all.😪 Watch Baepsae and then the DKDKTV explanation, it's another statement by BTS about their generation.

BTS really is the very 1st band, atleast kpop boy group that tackles issues in the society. Most kpop group before BTS only focus on bop songs, repetitive catchy songs or love songs. I guess its partly becoz of the Rap line who came from underground scene where they really spit bars and things that actually makes sense. Most BTS songs were co produced by Suga and RM specially in their early Albums. Thats why the lyrics and emotions BTS brings are real and raw becoz they made it themselves, it actually came from them. Unlike other group where the songs are manufactured without input from the members of the group.

So just some info about the word SKY, that is in captions in the lyrics. It refers to the top three most prestigious schools in Korea, the Seoul Uni, Korea Uni and Yonsei Uni. Also, N.O stands for No Offense.

Suicide is the #1 cause of death for teens and youth ages 9-24 and a lot of that is probably due to stress to perform in school and bullying which is a huge problem in South Korea which you can see with the amount of Idols who have taken there own lives in the last 3-4 years
