I think a lot of BTS songs are both sad and hopeful. Paradise is sad because it’s the realization that life isn’t what you thought it would be. It’s about enjoying the journey instead of the end result. Enjoy life even when it isn’t what you imagined.

Finally! This is one of their best songs! RM is such a genius! Also, Yoongi talks about this theme a lot, he comforted armys many times saying that it's ok not to have a big dream and that even giving up on some things takes a lot of courage! Also, i just love how Hobi's verse is kind of an answer to Yoongi's, it's like they're talking to each other. And I know you know this DT, but just a reminder: all three rappers always write their own verses ;)

The rappers doesn't always write their raps, RM said that he never sang rap lyrics he didn't write before the song Respect, whereas Suga and Jhope did rap lyrics by RM a lot

The main reason why I follow BTS is for the amazing lyrics of their songs, like Namjoon said "I think the lyrics are more important because these are for you", and that is so true. Many songs of today are so superficial, the majority only focus in the production. For this reason I don't hear music of this generation, I prefer music of 70s, 80s and 90s, especially rock and metal. Personally, I think that RM and Yoongi are genius writers, Namjoon is so metaphorical and Yoongi is so deep, he literally puts his soul in the lyrics.

This song is my all time favorite from BTS songs. This song is so powerful and this was one of the songs that made me decide to stan BTS (noting to myself that I am not into Kpop or Band). This song made a remarkable place in my heart. The lyrics is so beautiful. 💜💜💜 Joon's explaination is so deep and beautiful as well.

I associate the song with unhappiness of pursuing something so hard, not because it’s what you truly want or is your real dream, but because it’s expected around you and pushed from society. When parents and people will be disappointed in you or be frowned down upon for not achieving those expected goals could make someone feel like a failure or loser and that he/she will never be happy. It makes me think of how their generation (i.e. like when they were in school) can’t have the capacity for a dream, because the pressure to face fierce competition to being at the top, so someday they will make it into SKY (or Ivy League schools, so they can get the big job). A lot of the times I feel like BTS use their lyrics to comfort listeners, because they worry this hopeless narrow future (wherever your’e at) could resort to one making a desperate and unfortunate decision (if you know what I mean 😔). They don’t want us to throw our lives away, just because of society and the pressure to follow what everyone deems cool and to be praised for success. I don’t think it means to not have a dream, but maybe almost the opposite. I think you have to reflect what are you’re desperately seeking/pursuing right now, is that really your dream or just copying/following other people’s dreams? Are you doing it just to be praised for success and not because this is what you want to do or your true calling. Anyway, that’s what I get from it and on what BTS talks about from their past songs.

This is exactly how I felt while listening to Paradise. I agree with you. And I know exactly how BTS was feeling when this track was written because I went through the same things. I was always expected to be good and to achieve goals set by my parents. I understand how difficult it was for all of BTS. And having to deal with society's expectations or living someone else's dreams. Living like that is not truly living, you're just existing.

This is how I feel with these lyrics, especially when BTS encourages self-love. It's self-love when you can finally live your own life and own dreams instead of living people's expectations. You have to get rid of the dreams that aren't yours and focus on what you need/want.

Maybe the word is melancholic rather than sad? I'm always so impressed with the stories and meanings behind BTS' music. They are so well read and educated, not to mention deep thinkers. Not to dis my own country or theirs but wouldn't it be great if we could find some kind of balance between the educational systems of Korea and the US? Theirs could ease up a bit and ours could ramp up some! I just think there is so much to learn and know about this world of ours and each other!

The song "Paradise" can also be about competition. About how detrimental (damaging) it is to your soul to always be in competition with others. For example, artists working 12-15 hours a day and always having to compete to live; is it really living if you spend your life constantly working which will later cause health problems. I've had to work those many hours and it was only causing me pain and sadness. (The lyrics to this track really mean so much to me now that I know what it's really about. And I know how meaningful it is to the rest of ARMY.) Why live your life trying to compete with others to get to the top or whatever? Life isn't a competition. This life is meant for you to be happy; to find happiness and to have real unconditional love. Yes, life's more about the journey rather than the end result; your journey with or without dreams. And at the end of that journey, you’ve learned what you needed to learn so that the end result will be more precious to you.

This song is particularly impactful for the South Korean context, where I understand there's a lot of pressure on young people to compete and succeed. Even in Western cultures there's such emphasis on going for your dream and getting ahead and climbing the ladder, and to obsess about that too much can mean hating yourself and writing yourself off as a failure if you don't get wherever that is. It was nice to see RM's thoughts on it. Yeah, the song's melancholy, but it's really supportive and sweet too. It's a part of BTS's discography that I'm not that familiar with, so it's quite new to me. It took quite a while for it to get over my radar but it really speaks to me. I play it every day on my uke 😊. Man I love those guys.

especially in Korea, your dream is basically shaped by what your parents want and what the society deems "successful." it's like everyone wants to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher -_- but obviously that's not everyone's dreams. kids go to school to cram school to tutoring to more study groups in order to get into some dream college and chase after a visage : ( i love this song so much and it's so comforting because instead of saying hey you can do it!! keep running! lets go! (which i mean can be encouraging too for some) they literally say hey it's okay to stop, it's okay to not have a dream as long as you have moments of happiness : ) take a breath! very different way of comforting someone!

I think the translation might have been slightly off, and that he meant the song is deep/sombre (not necessarily sad), so the title proposed by Hitman B wouldn't have suited the song. Also, I'm guessing he was talking about "rat race," which was translated into "foolish race."
