In Jungian Psychology the Shadow represents all the parts of ourself that we try to repress and hide from including our fears, weaknesses, and flaws. Carl Jung theorizes that we have to face and accept our shadows in order to obtain enlightenment and well being, no matter how painful it might be to examine those parts of ourselves that we don’t like. Here BTS is facing their fear of losing their passion for music and performing. In the beginning the shadow is huge and has a life of it’s own, but after they face their fear it loses it’s control over them and at the end Jungkook looks back as the shadow shrinks and disappears.

"Do you thang?" or "What's my thang?" is basically asking what are you passionate about. The first death is in reference to this saying by choreographer Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” For BTS this means that if they lose their passion for making music, it would be a first death for them.

The song is about their fear of losing their passion for music. Jimin is the shadow behind Suga as they are similar in height. Junkook is Jhopes shadow also similar height. Jimin is Black Swan to me. The behind the scenes of Jimins parts are just amazing. He is classically trained and was top student. Also a black belt in Taekwondo and is a Kendo master. He often incorporates the moves into his dance.

Well the term "Black Swan" has many meanings that can be accepted as possible for this masterpiece of a song. 1. The most accepted one is from the ballet, about losing passion or losing the ability to create, so dance, so sing; and that is an artist's first death. And "Do your thang, what's my thang" carries two meanings with this; one is that people tell them to just do their thing and they'll get it, but they ask themselves or their shadow "what is my thing", what is it that they want to do, what they are passionate about to keep going. The second one can be the art speaking to them, more from a painter or a musician's point of view, where you have something you have started, but it cannot find a form in the artist's mind, you get stuck on it, get writers or painters' block even and may even obsess about that piece and cannot start another. 2. The second meaning for Black Swan is literally the animal, black swan. Black swans were considered to be a myth, and were used to describe an "improbable" event or a miracle, as in "they do not exist". Even when they were first discovered, they were not put in the same family as in swans because it was too shocking, and it was believed for centuries that those animals did not exist, so instead of calling them "swans" they just had to be something else. And this can be connected to "whats my thang, tell me now" as in BTS asking to the people that categorize them or etc "okay if i am not what i think i am, then just tell me what i am"; how people sometimes say that BTS aren't artists, or not real musicians, not rap, not hip-hop, some say they're not even just pop but K-pop only, not r&b... so nothing is left for them to "be" or to call themselves that because everyone says that they're not "this". And this makes them question themselves more and maybe even make them lose passion. And maybe they are okay with not being called "swans" as in they are okay with being different rather than trying to fit the classification. 3. The third meaning is again about the animal black swan, but more about the theory "Black Swan Theory"; (more on the psychological and phylosophical sides of the theory) : where an event is considered to be "improbable/impossible" with 100% certainty, but then is seen to be "real/probable" which creates a big effect on the people and at the end it is over-rationalized by people suddenly saying "yes, it could have been predicted" and some people will even try to now name the event a "white swan - which is again a shocking event with big impact, wasn't predicted 100% but the statistics showed that it would happen" instead of a "black swan - a completely unpredicted event" to rid themselves of the shock effect by not giving the event the big title it deserves but rather underestimate it. (white/black costume change) - (this theory exists in economy as well) But BTS IS a Black Swan, they themselves did let us know of that from time to time, noone predicted them to be at this level internationally, not even them or maybe especially them and the industry they are in, no matter how much we believed in their talent and hardwork, it was not seen as possible because it was never done before. They reached this success by staying outside of the norms (like a black swan again, as in this time being different), they are rare and their success at this level is rare especially considering how they have reached it without any help from the outside or any favors. Now people sometimes do rationalize their success at hindsight, some accept them "too quickly" at the level of ignoring, some say it was expected due to Korean wave in the Western countries and even more groups are now "expected" to reach that level now that it DID happen once, forgetting the fact that BTS is not a white swan, they were/are out of the statistics and they are a black swan, but now people try to turn them into white swans, so if this happens again with another group or just if BTS reaches even more success, they can call it "expected" and basically some will keep ignoring their impact and unexpectedness. And this can connect to the lyrics of "dying passion" in the song. They see their success as a black swan event, fearing that maybe even they themselves may not repeat it, reach the same numbers or success again. But the more people try to call them expected and their future projects' successes "expected" they have more pressure to reach that, and to repeat. But they also like in this album, fear of this being their peak, the end of their rise, they do not wanna go higher because they will fall harder but they also fear of not going higher because that would mean they have reached the top point, they cannot fullfill what their fans or people expect/wait from them anymore, their past successes won't be repeated. It can start the dilemma of them trying to reach that success with every song they create in the future which will make them lose creativity and make them unable to produce, them being criticized for not reaching that success anymore which may make them lose passion, or they may just one day lose the will to create all of a sudden (because it has happened to artists) and they fear of that fall.

Yes, shadows are very much a recurring theme. To understand, I'd suggest RM's rap 'Persona' followed by the DKDKTV explanation, as that song and explanation are really the introduction. MOTS is based on a theory by Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung. BTS are brilliant songwriters!

A beautiful song, very artistic, with a very deep, a personal lyrics. Choreography is a lot more contemporary, beautifully performed by all the members, Jimin really shines here with his elegant yet intense dance, that conveys emotions perfectly. He is also Jungkook’s and Suga’s shadow and JHope is Namjoon’s.

I don't doubt that RM took some visualization and inspiration about the inner life of a dancer from the 2010 movie, but the theme of the song aligns with the Martha Graham quote, not the movie. The movie's theme is about the thin divide between having passion for ones art, vs. a dangerous obsession with perfection. Nathalie Portman actually descends into madness while chasing perfection. I think the idea that the movie inspired the song was an idea someone casually tossed out in an interview or article, and it was repeated so many times that people just accepted it as fact.

The movie and the song/mv has similarities yet very different so I won't say the song follow the movie. The movie explore mental illness. The song is about losing one's passion. The themes are wholly different even though the connector is dance. But Martha was a legendary contemporary dancer and the mv has contemporary dancing. Contemporary dancing evolved to break free from the rigidity of ballet. This further sets the movie and song/mv apart.

@Jim Games, “ A dancer Dies twice , first when they Stop dancing! That is the most painful!” Said by The great dancer/ choreographer Martha Graham. She was meaning that when a dancer stops dancing that is the first death which is the most painful even more painful than the real death! BTS took that sentence and elaborated more into it, BTS was saying my passion for music me creating music if that stops that will be just as painful as death! BTS passion for making music for penning lyrics is always been their joy and their love and their enthusiasm to create if that stops that’s also like death and this is exactly what “Black Swan“ means! Breaking down the lyrics will also be very helpful doing a little background research also will be helpful so technically you know that BTS never makes a song without something hidden something deeper something more meaningful nothing is transparent here! This is their passion to create to move on the stage that is what they love to do most ! if it stops that will be their greatest loss and it will be like death! If you have something that is passionate in your life something that you always find enjoyable and it is not a chore every day to do something that you love but once you lose that enthusiasm once the light goes out of that creativity and you find it no more interesting than that is like death! Many artist feel that way and we’re not just talking about the music industry or the performance of a dancer. We’re talking about all interest that someone finds it’s like when you go to work and it’s a joy to go to work it’s not like a job which you dread it’s something that you totally enjoy that’s why I always say to my family if you don’t enjoy this job and it’s a dredge every day to get up and go to it then find something else! Passion for something will always keep you Going! I apologize I went on a tangent here because I find that the music that BTS do always has something more than at face value and never take their music for face value reading the lyrics might be perplexing or not able to understand because of Korean metaphors and cultural references but there’s always something that is hidden gem of wisdom of clarity and of social awareness!💜 BoraHae 💜🙏🏼

I’ve always loved this song. As the album explores Jungian psychology of developing the self (ego), you have to recognize the outer persona you project to others and reconcile the “shadows”, that part of your personality you try to hide. It seems ironic to me that BTS excels at their shadows in all of their albums. 😊 But even looking at Filter, and its message, I think artists can get wrapped up by what their audience (fans) want, rather than what they want to create. I’ve read somewhere that those K-pop groups that last beyond their debut often disband after their first contract (typically 7 years). I think it’s admirable that they even question whether they still have that passion to create and perform.

No the first death is not when you sneeze🤣 For an artist the first death is when they can no longer sing/dance/create art, whether the body is no longer capable or when there is no longer interested. The second death is the physical death. The shadows pertain to Carl Jung's individual journey. One must recognize the Persona, Shadow and Ego in order to find one's true self. Thanks for a fun reaction.💜

I can understand losing artistic passion, i.e. first death. I was so much into drawing/sketching/painting with pen/paper/brush, as a kid in the mid 1970's & all of the 1980's, especially drawing the spaceships as realistically as possible. By the late 1980's, without realizing it or self-aware, I was pretty much near the end into that kind of artwork. In the beginning, I was drawing Star Wars & other sci-fi stuff & was so crazed about it. Later on, at college, I was into drawing technical illustrations, such as designing speaker enclosures & keyboard synthesizer case designs, etc. Then about a decade later, I got into CAD, i.e. drawing 3D stuff on computer. I drew up a 3D model of a kitchen island, which actually got built (by carpenters, not me). Then that too got diminished, although I still do some sparse 3D room designs for architecture. I'm not a professional at any of that. Even my love for piano sort of died out in the late 1980's, although I still have a MIDI keyboard & use a DAW every now & then. I almost got a job recording a guitarist, but I told him I was not ready to be his recording engineer, simply because I hadn't done it in a long time. I still bang my head for that, I should have kept practicing consistently. And I still haven't, lol. I also did plastic scale modeling kits in the mid 1970's, which died by the mid 1980's, but I still have all the models I've built. There is something about getting bored of something. Maybe real life situations, or real life in general, peel those things away & you either move on with other passions/hobbies that you want to try out or you just don't have the free time anymore because you are immersed in work that doesn't have anything to do with it. Growing up is a pain (pun, growing pains). If I have to, I will sketch/draw things out a little bit, but it would for practicality's sake & not just for "art" . As I look back, I have to wonder if technical illustrating was what I was supposed to get into (as a field of work). I just don't have that crazy passion for drawing on paper anymore, as the art of drawing was my first love ... & first death.

"A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.”--Martha Graham. Ms. Graham's quote pertains to the loss of passion as a dancer-or retiring even...the ultimate loss to a dancer, and this also applies in many ways to the Black Swan movie. I think BTS incorporated many things in this performance from that, but mainly transmits the fear of loss of passion of their music-losing oneself, or control over oneself. It is quite deep but hauntingly lovely.

The “first death” refers to the loss of the passion for their craft. The song is about the fear of losing their passion to perform. It is, I believe, a reference from dance - a dancers first death is when they lose their passion for the dance. It is quite deep in its meaning. A beautiful song with a stunning MV.

I think “do ur thang” is what they’re being asked to do what they want but by “what’s my thang”, they mean to ask u what their passion is b/c now they’ve lost it and with that, have died their first death. And the last one where the shadow retreats is their dancing/singing spirit finally leaving them. That’s how I see it.

I've been watching each of your reactions to BTS and I think that what's happening is that Army likes to talk about all the symbolism and connectivity in their music. I think it's causing you to start to overanalyze. I often witness you overreaching for some meaning or symbolic message. The lyrics in this song are pretty straightforward. Martha Graham is the person to "coin" the idea of a dancer dying their first death when they're unable to dance anymore. This has a broader connotation with anyone who is created and fears losing the passion for that or they're coming a time where they are unable to be creative. In this song BTS is talking about the fear of not having the passion or losing the creativity or the ability to write and perform and dance. They use the idea of the first death to describe that. The repeated reference to film me now is a metaphor for document this, remember this, because it may not always be this way. By the end of the song they talk about getting that passion back.
