"borahae" is a term created by one of the members, V/Taehyung! it's a mix of "purple" and "love/i love you" in korean, translating to "i purple you." taehyung explained this as roughly "purple is the last color of the rainbow, meaning we'll love you forever and be with you till the end." so to sum it up, it's BTS' and ARMY's (the fans) way of telling each other i love you! i love your reactions by the way, i'm so glad you're enjoying them and their craft :)

How seriously BTS took rap (as well as how talented the rapline is) is why I had no choice but to become ARMY. After I heard HipHop lover, it was a done deal for me. I had never encountered anyone in kpop who was this genuine abt their love and appreciation for hiphop. No one who STUDIED the genre the way BTS did. As a black American I felt so proud to know hiphop had traveled the globe to inspire the rapline in the way they laid it out (lyrically) in this song. Yoongi saying hiphop is his everything and if loving this culture is a sin he’d gladly die 100 times, just filled me with so much pride. Truly, I had no choice but to support BTS from the moment I heard this song.

They identified with hip-hop. They did not want to be stuck in a path that society (and older generations) expected them to follow. That life was not for them or even not in them, and they took risks and sacrificed with the high possibly of failure to pursue their dream and calling. They were tested by hardship, but they proved their character and remain who they are, good and humble, sincere people. Lot of celebs, especially those in the West, let their ego, pride, and/or greed change them. It makes you feel proud to support BTS.

Well, you can't blame people for not knowint what they've never been taught. Like, I am a white German European growing up on Pop Rock Metal influenced Local Bands stuff...the fact that HipHop (onces) used to be more than "I fuck all the b*tches in the club and on the pavement because I discovered my gentials." Only reached me later in a curious attempt wondering where the Genre even stems from but I still didn't know what the appeal could have been before I discovered the way these 7 South Korean boys-men handled it and that was as they were entering the MAINSTREAM. I personally don't have a problem to admit that when it comes to music and Genre am pretty much Mainstream (even in the alternatives) and don't know sh*t. And it still doesn't keep me from getting happy how much this Song is celebrated by everyone who grew up on the mentioned Artists like I will never feel it but it makes me grin like a cheshire cat everytime there is a new intrest-Fan who you think you could suggest it too. ^^
@freyja6360

@@annasaddiction5129 It's just you not being interested in this kind of music deeply. That's ok but don't "disrespect" the whole genre by saying that only once it was more than "I fuck all the bitches" (BTW, what's the reason behind censoring the "bitches" and not "fuck"?), that's only a part of it and it has it's historical reason for existing in the genre too, you would be surprised. I'm aware that it's the kind of hip-hop that is prevalent in German mainstream media (Polish person here, I'm more-or-less aware of what is popular there and have a good knowledge of the classics) but there's a lot of great hip-hop artists in Germany as well. Actually, "Liebesbrief" by Thomas D. is the reason that I know that German language is not only hard-sounding but can sound softly and delicately and be truly beautiful. It's still one of my ever-favorites in German music along with the whole Die Fantastischen Vier. But I don't think that the place you were born is that important. I was always listening to rock/metal/alternative but that have never stopped me from growing up listening to 2Pac, Wu-Tang, Eminem etc. as well. In high-school I got into j-rock and j-pop and the drill was the same - when you are learning something knew that comes from another culture, you have to pay close attention first and learn what would be disrespectful to that culture, especially when that art has it's basis in the struggle of a group of people in said culture. Also, when you're an adult, you can't rely always to "be taught" everything since others don't exist to serve you (I'm not saying that you're thinking that but words like that are giving an impression of "I don't understand how privileged I am" and I'm sure that most ARMYs aren't that). You have to actively seek that knowledge yourself - nobody else will do that for you. BTS themselves had actively roasted music creators who act like the hip-hop has no history and you can just do it like it was always Korean without learning where it came from (RM and Suga literally made the other's listen to American hip-hop classics so they would know the basis). I'm sure that Maria was referring to those artist and not casual people who sometimes say something that sounds wrong and they don't mean it. That just an honest mistake, not a consious choice to omit a ton of history from the art that's supposedly loved by those people. Of course that it's normal that you haven't learned about that culture naturally but you're not trying to be a hip-hop artist😉. I love though how our guys are bringing us all together. It's the only fandom that I know that's made out of people with tastes and backgrounds that are wildly different, but we all surely know good music when it hits us in the face. Have a nice weekend, dear! Hopefully it's less rainy than where I am💜

I love that you caught the boogaloo king tut reference. Hiphop is not just rap, it's an entire culture, it had the dance and the dj elements and hobi represents that in bts. Also I wanna talk about epik high. Epik high is a korean hiphop group that started in 2001. They were pioneers in the genre along with another group dynamic duo who is also mentioned. Rm and jhope both mention epik high in their verses. Both suga and rm were fans of epik high in elementary school, that's how they were introduced to hiphop and rap for the first time. Hiphop wasn't popular in korea at the time, so epik high struggled a lot, their label tried to market them as a boy group even once. But about 3 years after they debuted epik high did a song called "fly" and it became a hit and did numbers in korea. That's how suga and RM both found hiphop. Then rm being a nerd, dove into the history of hiphop and its origins in america. Jhope was more familiar with American hiphop than korean ones cus he was dancing to US music from age 10. Jhope only started listening to epik high after he joined bighit, rm and suga introduced epik high to him.

So, I’m a mixed kid born in the 70s and grew up with hiphop and it is dear to my heart. Watching their real love and respect is incredibly moving. I hesitate to suggest this, but back in the early days, they did a series called American Hustle Life. It is cringey and starts out pretty racist in my opinion, but as it goes on, they really form relationships with Coolio, Warren G, and some other folks hired to “school” them. And a beautiful gospel voice teacher who seems so proud of them by the end. Most of BTS come from nothing and relate to hiphop on a visceral level. So if you can stomach some of the cringe, it’s worth a watch.

14:19 and YoonGi's (Suga) story is filled with that grit and determination. His parents didn't support him for a while, I think I heard that they would even throw out his notebooks and equipment. Not only that but they were not well off, so he had a part-time job as a high school student (which isn't that common there)...the studio he mentioned, he was writing for others there and has said that his music was ripped off and he was not paid most of the time. Then left home at 17 or 18 for Seoul by himself. Had many days of deciding on either eating or taking the bus (home was an hour walk). While he was still a trainee he had a part-time job because the label was on the brink of closing...while working as a delivery person on his bike he was hit by a car and dislocated his shoulder but didn't say anything because he thought they would kick him out (only finally had surgery on it in ~2021 after years of touring getting injections and being taped up). I've heard him say all he cared about at one point was to at least debut so he didn't have to go home and look everyone in the eye that didn't believe in him as a failure.

y'know why armys insist people learn about bts' origins as a hiphop group? it may seem like a moot point bc they've branched out into a wide variety of genres now and go back to the roots only once in a while, but I think hiphop gave bts the inspiration and will to write THEIR stories into their art, whatever the genre the song itself may be of. that's what set bts apart from the beginning-- learning what real music entails from the greats themselves. bts are students of hiphop in the sense that they will put every fibre of their being, their blood and sweat into their craft! every time! also, can I know what song your ringtone is?😂

He listens to new music every day. On a different interview on SUCHWITA Jungkook admitted he did not listen to all of them. In the book. They describe the life in the dorms being like a Hip Hop School of Rock with RM being like the Jack Black character, and Suga like his TA. They would also make the vocal line watch performance videos and say look how cool that is. Trying to get them all to understand and love the musicblike they did. Thats also when J hope learned to Rap.

I grew up listening to hip hop and Chicano rap so when I came across BTS I could immediately tell there was something different to them than other KPOP group. It’s noticeable who comes into rapping because they grew up with the music and who only started because their company assigned them that role when they formed their group.

12:02 BTS always meticulously makes lyrics. RM also said that he pays big attention how sounds of words hit ear. And really, what stands out for me in BTS is how the sound of words hits you, adding the emotion and melodies and beats, you don't even need translation to get lost in their songs

You might like Born Singer, which is inspired by J Cole born sinner. BTS did an updated version of this song last year live. They originally did it back during their debut in 2013. If people took the time to read BTS lyrics and listen to their music, they would see they are not just pop they do all genres of music. What I love about them you never know what you are going to get. No two songs are ever the same. There is an introduction to BTS by Taylor to give you some background about the group and each member. 💜

The word for love in Korean is Saranghae, the word for purple in Korean is Bora. In a concert, Taehyung named purple as our fandom colour, and he coined Borahae; love in our colour. So Borahae is a very special term between BTS and ARMY 💜 I know you love lyrics, so google up 'doolsetbangtan' and enjoy the lyrics break down along with cultural and historical context.

As many people know, j-hope got his start in the world of music through dance. As he mentions in the lyrics to “Chicken Noodle Soup” (feat. Becky G), he grew up dancing on Choong-jang Street. In his second year of middle school he became the youngest member of local dance crew NEURON and went on to scoop up awards at several dance competitions. He was already considered a dance maverick in the area long before he ever became an adult. As revealed in the track “Hip Hop Phile” off BTS’s first studio album, DARK & WILD, j-hope was listening to old-school hip hop and other pre-2000s music from the time he was dancing boogaloo and King Tut. But it’s an understatement to say he was simply listening. He necessarily listens to everything in the music-from the beat to the lyrics-very thoroughly, and it’s fair to say at this point that he’s soaked up the music so completely that it’s embedded itself into every corner of his mind and every inch of his body. He also started rapping once he began training as a singer. It was at that time that he discovered J. Cole. j-hope shows his love for the rapper in “Hip Hop Phile,” where he dedicates more than two lines to him. I was curious how j-hope, who got his start as a dancer, came to like J. Cole, himself famous for his lyrics. But seeing how even today j-hope uses an old-school sound and writes introspective lyrics, I think it’s perhaps not so surprising after all. J. Cole is a jack of all the music trades. Originally a producer, he then wrote lyrics chock-full of rhymes, poetry and spiritual reflection and put them over his own beats. j-hope has said how much he respects J. Cole and is quickly becoming as well-rounded as the artist he looks up to. j-hope was already dancing at a professional level, but he’s since polished his rapping, songwriting and production skills through “self-learning for 11 years,” as he sang in “MORE” (meaning 12 years now). He said in an interview with GQ Korea that he imagines himself on stage and writing around that right from when he starts making a song. He may have started as a dancer in Gwangju but he shows his versatility as an artist as he continues to draw from that experience. Although j-hope was positioned as a rapper when he debuted, he had never been a rapper in any meaningful capacity prior to that. But that has actually given him unbridled ambition and clarity to be free with his musical pursuits. As I wrote in a column for SisaIN in 2018, j-hope doesn’t really owe the Korean hip hop scene much because it isn’t where he got his start. He has since said with confidence that his musical roots are the 1980s and ’90s hip hop that he grew up dancing to. Jack In The Box and “on the street” back up his claim. “MORE,” released in advance of Jack In The Box, expresses his thirst for achievement, and the album’s closer, “Arson,” shows he wants to keep trying new things even though he’s aware of how dangerous ambition can be. - weverse magazine magazine.weverse.io/article/view?lang=en&num=675

"Borahae" which combining "Bora"(puple)and Saranhae(I love you) means "I purple you" which is a term one of their members V(Kim Taehyung) made up in one of their concerts. He said, "purple is the last color of rainbow. It means i will trust and love you for a long time" and since then its been an iconic phrase we(BTS and ARMY) use to express our love for each other. Purple has also become our iconic special colour because of it.

Borahae (pronounced like bora-hay) is written in English as “I purple you”. Bora (보라) is the word for purple, and it was combined with the ending hae (해) - like in the word Saranghae (사랑해) which means I love you. It’s essentially a sort of play in words. It was a phrasing created by one of the members V, one of the vocalists- he gave it extra meaning as well saying it would mean “to trust & love you for a long time”. It’s common phrasing among ARMY💜 Love the reactions man!

I loved hip hop from before you or BTS were even born. As a little white girl in the suburbs I got made fun of because while my friends were into Billy Joel and Journey I was hooked on Run DMC and Doug E Fresh. Like I still remember the first time somebody played Rock Box for me. Life changed. When I found BTS I thought they'd be a fun little k-pop diversion for a few weeks but then I heard the Cyphers and I realized this relationship was going to be much deeper than that. If you know you know.

I think this is the first BTS song you're hearing that includes all seven members? The other four are singers. Having four talented singers in addition to the three talented rappers (with one of the rappers and one of the singers having come to the group originally as dancers) allows BTS to explore almost any genre of music that interests them. They've done everything from acid jazz/bossa nova to Latin pop to pure ballads to boy band pop to the rap you've already heard, all the way through to mashups of all the above. They themed an entire album around concepts of duality and self as explored by German poet/philosopher Hermann Hesse in his novel Demian. They named two albums after the map of the soul conceptualized by Carl Jung. They experiment. They try everything. Because they love what they do. Because they're such curious and willing musical explorers, they open doors for people to learn about music they'd never heard. You came to BTS through J. Cole. Think about how many of BTS' 40 to 100 million fans around the world (depending on whether you believe TIME magazine or the Harvard Business Review, respectively) found J. Cole because of j-hope's admiration for him. That's the kind of connection the world needs more of: doors that open both ways and allow us all to walk through and learn and understand more about each other.

I love this reaction, I knew you would enjoy it! I was one of those who recommended the song, I love it! This song, for me, is the *INTRODUCTION of BTS's rap line*. RM talks about his old school hip hop influences and what this culture represents to him and how he came to it. The early age at which he fell in love with rap and the respect he has for hip hop and what being a rapper means to him, which goes beyond just following a beat, the message is the essence. Jhope did not rap before he was in BTS (in fact, RM and SUGA helped him in the early years, in addition to his own study and effort, until he found his own style) but he was part of the hip hop world as an underground dancer. He has developed a style that reflects the good ear and natural rhythm he has, his flow, his cadence, his swag...jhope dances with the beat while he raps, fabulous! SUGA's verse is beautiful, although he doesn't mention his influences such as EPIK HIGH (an influence for all 3) or EMINEM (the first album he bought was his), he tells his story and how hip hop came into his life naturally and although many tried to stop him, rap persisted in him and became his everything. SUGA's verse is the story of any rapper who feels passion for music and hip hop culture..."If loving this culture is a sin, I'll die over a hundred times" THANKS FOR YOUR REACTION! I highly recommend "Born Singer" is an adapted song by BTS of J. Cole's song "Born Sinner". Originally, the song was released unofficially in 2013 (BTS debut year), and it has the same composition as the original and the lyrics were re-written by RM, SUGA and J-hope. Today is an official song of the group (obviously with J. Cole's permission due to copyright issues) included in the anthology album Proof (their latest album): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpS4gmaie5iShZo&ab_channel=mar21

Oh yes they have RM&Suga(Agust D) actually were in the SK Underground Scene and got hated for going the Idol route, there they've got handed the flyer out "You don't fit the Idol Beauty Standard BS" and even their debut was of a mere lucky coincdence because the Group that theoretically had their spot couldn't go all of a sudden...and that was their first TV Performances and many of which got cut short.. There are clips in the archives of BTS selling tickets to one of their first concerts in LA, I belive, for free.... Damn those times are gone long now they fill Stadiums with more habitants on regular basis than many countries have. Crazy and another prove that "overnight success" is an utter nonsense phrase...

ah i really love your reactions!! this song is one of the reasons why i love and respect bts so much. they give credits where it’s due! so you see, kpop profits off of hip hop and black culture a lot, but they don’t respect it. usually in kpop groups they have a rap line aka members that can rap, but they’re just there to fill in (or as suga once said, “all of you who are called rapper because you can't sing, the title is too extravagance for you"). so you won’t find rappers like this anywhere in kpop, even though some “rappers” in kpop groups are trained for it and may appear to rap well, they don’t know the culture - they’re just doing it because their companies told and taught them so. but not bts. originally, bts was supposed to be just a three member hiphop group, consisting only of rm, suga and jhope. they even have a song from that time, called paldogangsan. their ceo decided later that they would be a hip hop idol group, and that’s how vocal line members were added. and you know already that suga and rm were underground rappers, and that music and hiphop was their passion and their salvation basically. jhope, as a street dancer, also always loved and respected the music and the culture. they never forget their roots. they always mention their idols, and they always show respect. they don’t claim the culture as theirs, but as an inspiration. i always admire them for that so much❤️

Here's the crazy part....they didn't forgo their education to pursue their dreams. All of the members have BA's and either have or are currently pursuing their Master's degrees. Let's be real..at this point they are set financially for life, but they value their education too. They did fight against the pressures around them to take the "safe route" of a reliable paycheck though. They had music in their souls and nothing was going to stop them. RM for example has a high IQ (148) and tested in the top 1.3% of S. Korea in several subjects. I'm sure his family pictured his future as a doctor or scientist, but he followed his passion. His intelligence shows through loud and clear in his art. It's incredible how they can switch back and forth between English and Korean, sometimes with lyrics that rhyme (and make perfect sense) in both languages. I love how they studied the culture and always give props where due to those who came before them. Thanks for reacting.

Since I suppose you may not be familiar with the OGs of Korean Hip-Hop that they shouted out as well, long story short : Epik High are 3, two rappers, Tablo and Tukutz along DJ Tukutz, they're legends (like the others obviously) and shit Tablo's one hell of a lyricist too just as much in English and Korean since he's Korean-American, Verbal Jint is known for having literally pioneered the optimal way of writing lyrically in Korean as in rhymes and all, basically revolutionned lyricism. Dynamic Duo debuted around 1996 if I recall correctly, Gaeko and Choiza are the two rappers of it and have countless classic albums and songs. If I'd recommend tracks on each of them : Epik High, I'd say Spoiler, Fly, Map of the Soul, Born Hater, also Tablo's "Chulcheo/Origin", his "Lesson 1", "Lesson 2 and so on are insane and a must check. I don't listen as much Verbal Jint as much, I'd recommend You Look Good, Walking in the Rain and Downhill. Lastly for Dynamic Duo, wouldn't know where to start, AEAO (with DJ Premier btw), their album Grand Carnival's a classic imo and from the album it I'd say Dodoripyo, Oksang, J.O.T.S, and Gaeko's Rhythm is Life, No Make Up. And honestly so much more for all of them as they've been at it for decades but that's about where to start if you want to dwelve into their music

This is my first time hearing this one, and OMG, the drive and passion. That's just what I was talking about in a BTS edit I made today. And shout out to Jimin, Jin, JK and V....OMG the vocalist was drowning in the Soul and R&B tip. Omg, I don't even know, they shouted out some of the foundations of hip-hop and then threw in the building bricks of their palace. #shooketh they sounded like an Angel Chorus line, dayum!!! They went in. And sadly they still aren't getting the right recognition. The Korean Billboards in the past 2 weeks have switched up the regulations so that Jimin's album has droped from the number 1 slot and he's the only one that's moved in the charts and radio play points is at 0.1 so he's not getting any radio play since he got to no.1 in the billboard charts, now suddenly some shadey shit going on in Korea since he hit the US billboards. Nuttun but fukery a gwaan, yeah and now I'm vex just thinking about it.

I don't know if you'll see this, but wanted to mention the Korean childhood/education culture specifically; since korea went through a lot of financial hardship after being split into two and after the war, one-two generations worked hard and brought the country up from that like an insane amount. The generations after that were met with the same expectations to further grow the country up, including to go to classes after school, and then to the library after that... basically study until 11pm every day. Get govt. jobs. Basically kids weren't having childhoods. A very intense and serious expectation for kids (Listen to N.O.!! and Dope) it seems to be changing recently. but that shows how hard it was for them to actually follow music INSTEAD of studying. Namjoon (the leader) was in the top 1% of students in school and still decided to be a rapper and to found what was meant to be an all-rap hip hop group, which evolved into adding dance and vocals. Very difficult decisions made starting age 15 where even his friends weren't supportive. I look up to them a lot.

There's a line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation and it's obvious which idol groups are simply using elements of hip hop purely for the aesthetics and which groups actually understand and respect the culture and it's roots. It was a smart move for Big Hit to send them to L.A. to study hip hop. Yes, it's hard to watch American Hustle Life without cringing, but I think the experience taught them pretty quickly that wearing certain styles or parroting certain phrases didn't make you legit. They came away with a better understanding of HH and it shows in the the many ways they show respect to the source material and give shoutouts to the artists who were their infiluences. The fact that Big Hit took the financial gamble to send them to L.A. for AHL when the company was struggling and budgets must have been so tight shows that Bang PD saw the genuineness in the boys and had faith in them.

Love what you said at the end man it sucks people don’t take them seriously or they think they don’t UNDERSTAND hip hop because they’re from Korea ❤️

I highly recommend you also check out the group Epik High, who they mentioned several times in the lyrics. Someone else already explained in the comments, but they’re a legendary OG Korean hip hop group. They played a huge role in the popularity of hip hop in Korea and are still dropping bangers to this day. 20 years in. I definitely think you’d like them. Anyway, I just wanted to say I’m really enjoying your reactions and your sincerity towards music in general. I appreciate your passion.

I have yet to miss any of you videos BUT somehow I managed to miss this one 😐 I’m late but let me get to it. First things first. This is one of the reason that the BTS RAPLINE is so different and special from other idols groups “rappers” These 3 guy love for hip hop shows in their lyrics, craft, and most importantly the knowledge they have. I will die on this hill when I say .. ain’t no other rappers in SK like the BTS RAPLINE! 🔥 they took the time to study also working with Warren G, Coolio (rip) and I feel like I’m missing some maybe. Anyways, they go so hard. Rapping with BTS and rappers as solos, it’s amazing to watch. GameBoyy 310 you real af! I love your videos! 💜

When you get a chance you should explore one of BTS’s music influences mentioned in the song -Epik High from Korea. They are currently touring in the US.

I recommend the song Nevermind, fun fact that Yoongi is the one who convinced Jimin to stay in the team and Jimin has Nevermind tattooed on his chest Also Tomorrow brought me a lot of comfort. Ddeang also but you have to watch lyrics explaination because there is a lot of word play in korean.

So happy you got a chance to hear this; it's one of my top 5 BTS songs! I knew you would love and appreciate it. They are all such music lovers, and they are very vocal at showing that love and respect. As they are focusing on their solo stuff right now with military enlistment happening, most of them have been lucky enough to work with some of their musical heroes...like j-hope with J.Cole for On the Street. I'm sure we will see more of that, too. ARMY are so happy to see them being able to do that! I'm really happy to see that Born Singer will be next. Loved watching this; thanks!

It's interesting that you notice their use of vocabulary. The hard core education in S Korea that they complain about so much (esp Suga) is also what enabled them to become the lyrical craftsmen they are. At the time they were in school (2000s) SK had the highest literacy rate in the world! It's crazy that education could have such an impact on the world of Hip Hop.

Did you know they were sent to the west coast to study hip hop back when they were trainees? There's an actual series that was filmed and available on yt... American Hustle. You should check it out. You can see that it's always been about the music, watch them grow. Their mentor in the show was Coolio.

I truly hope you learn all of Suga's life story someday. He really struggled to be to where he is right now. He literally had to choose to ride the bus home or eat some days. He did not have support but he kept going and he reaps the benefits now. I love his story and that's why he is one of my main biases.

“Borahae” has a very beautiful, unique story behind it. Back in 2016 when BTS was going through a very hard time due to many hardships, vocalist member Taehyung has just lost his grandmother who raised him like a second mother. During their fanmeet concert, fans were covering lightsticks with different colors bags. When Taehyung was having his speech and cried opening up about his grief, the bags were purple. Taehyung made up a completely new meaning to purple color, saying “purple means: I will love you and trust you for a long time” and said “I purple you” to fans. In Korean Bora - purple, hae - action verb-you ending, borahae. Somehow it immediately caught on with the entire fandom, became BTS & ARMYs way of expressing mutual love and trust, many of the most famous buildings in the world lit up purple to celebrate BTS visiting them. Please react a bit to vocal line, for example Taehyung’s song Singularity, Jimin just dropped his solo debut with synth pop Like Crazy
